Winfield wants Driver matchup

September 24th, 2007 – 11:45 AM by Judd Zulgad

Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield had an interesting comment during his weekly appearance on KFAN Radio this morning. Winfield discussed the fact that teams are largely staying away from throwing the ball to his side; he didn’t come out and say it but the reason is because quarterbacks would much rather go after second-year corner Cedric Griffin.

This is what happened in the fourth quarter Sunday when Dwayne Bowe caught a 16-yard touchdown pass that proved to be the difference in Kansas City’s 13-10 victory. Toward the end of the interview, Winfield was asked about playing against Green Bay and receiver Donald Driver on Sunday at the Metrodome.

“If I’m not matched up on Donald Driver one-on-one something is wrong,” Winfield said.

Driver is the Packers’ leading receiver and is tied for eighth in the NFL with 20 receptions for 265 yards and two touchdowns. What does his comment mean?

Ordinarily, Winfield lines up at the left corner and Griffin is on the right side. But some times what teams will do is scrap the specific designation and put their top cover corner on the opposing team’s best receiver. The Vikings tried this back in 2005 when Carolina’s Steve Smith absolutely destroyed Fred Smoot. In that case, Winfield rarely if ever got to cover the Panthers’ top threat.

Griffin has struggled this season with his tackling — something that is a strength of Winfield’s game — and it’s obvious Winfield wants to see more action come his way. Having him on Driver would accomplish that.

As for today, Childress will hold his Monday news conference e at 12:35 p.m. We’ll have an update shortly thereafter.

A few stats: Through Sunday, the Vikings are ranked 26th offensively (10th in rushing and 28th in passing) and are tied for 10th in defense (second in rushing and 18th in passing). The rush defense jumped four places from Week 2. The offense, meanwhile, fell four places.

Individually, Adrian Peterson is tied for 10th in the NFL in rushing with 271 yards on 64 attempts. The rookie is fifth in the NFC in rushing.

HALL BEAT UP IN FALCONS LOCKER ROOM?

There are uncorroborated rumors making the rounds that Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall was beat up, presumably by one or more teammates, following a Falcons loss that was fueled in part by Hall’s inability to control his emotions.

After being flagged for a total of 67 yards on a second-half drive that the Panthers used to tie the game, Hall got into a sideline confrontation with coach Bobby Petrino.

We don’t know for sure whether Hall was indeed roughed up or otherwise accosted by teammates after the game, but it wouldn’t surprise us to find out that the rumor is true. Hall is a brash and outspoken member of the organization, and his Virginia Tech ties to Mike Vick probably have prompted some in the locker room to view him differently in the wake of Vick’s legal troubles. Today’s actions would have potentially been enough to get a frustrated Falcon to convert hostile feelings toward Hall into action.

State Of The Purple says:

September 24th, 2007 at 12:11 pm

State Of The Purple Monday Morning Address (SOTPMMA)

State of the Vikings: Not very good at all

OK, so there are some positives to take out of the season so far.

1) Adrian Peterson is a monster running back. The dude has a motor that just won’t quit, and is not afraid to lower his shoulder or head and just run people over. If our offensive line was playing anywhere near the level they should be playing at, and if we had a passing game to balance the attack, AP would be ripping off 20+ yard runs like nobody’s business.

2) Run defense is freakin’ insane. I seriously have no idea why any opposing offensive coordinator even TRIES to run into the middle against the Williams Wall. The linebackers and defensive line are spectacular at finding the runner and stopping him as soon as possible. Incredibly great job on run defense.

3) Punting. OK, you know there is SERIOUSLY something wrong with this team when #3 positive is PUNTING. Chris Kluwe’s done a great job, what can I say…perhaps the competition in training camp actually got him scared into performing at an NFL caliber level this year.

And…the negatives come next…

State Of The Purple says:

September 24th, 2007 at 12:11 pm

Negatives

1) Probably the most over looked of all the negatives (and it showed yesterday in KC); the offensive line. They have played disasterously on the road in hostile environments, and there is no way this team can even think of getting a win on the road until they shore up their offensive line play in visitor’s stadiums. Bryant McKinnie is a joke…as typically happens, you give an undeserving player a big contract, he goes out, lives it up, gets fat and lazy, and no longer performs because he already has the guaranteed money. Seriously, are people stupid enough to not realize what motivates human beings to excel? Uh huh, money. As for the right side, they need shoring up as well.

2) Lack of a pass rush. Our corners are really not that bad…Cedric Griffin keeps getting exposed because he can’t cover a guy for the 15 seconds that our opposing QBs have to throw…All-Pro and super trooper Antoine Winfield can, but how many years he wants to put up with this Chili’s crap, I doubt it can be too much longer. I want to see more fresh legs in there…Udeze has shown he cannot get it done; Robison and Edwards have. Put the guys in that perform, and sit the underperformers on the bench. In the NFL, there should be no other influence on playing time than production…not contract size, not tenure, nothing. Put the playmakers in and lets see some pass rush hurries and sacks, and not force our DBs to stay in coverage so long.

3) Brad Childress. He’s an idiot, and has nothing to show to prove he can actually coach this team to victory, even when two teams basically hand you victories at their home stadium, and you fail to answer the call. The guy seriously does not get it, and if Wilf doesn’t fire him at the end of the season, I can see a major ticket holder revolt in 2008 and every 2008 home game will be blacked out. The offesive scheme and system he has brought offers little hope, if any, of scoring actual offensive touchdowns, and his stubborness to acknowledge it is simply arrogant. The doublespeak and spin that comes out of the guy’s mouth is so proposterous and does not belong in the NFL. We need a straight talker, straight shooter like Bill Cowher, who wears his emotions on his sleeve, and tries everything in his power to win football games, not by trying not to lose games.

4) Quarterback situation. But really, this whole negative on the QBs has to do with negative #3, Childress. His offensive scheming basically handcuffs whomever is the QB into dink and dunk passes, which you have to execute at 100% efficiency to have any success in the NFL. I don’t recall one single deep pass thrown by the Vikings yesterday, outside of the overthrow by Holcomb to Ferguson, and not very many at all have been thrown beyond 15 yards all year. More notably, I would venture to say that no pass over 15 yards (in the air, no YAC added on) has been completed ALL SEASON long. That simply cannot and will not win football games. Tarvaris really doesn’t have the accuracy to throw a deep pass, Bolliger isn’t even worth mentioning in this sentence, and Holcomb is the only one experienced to stay in the pocket and deliver a somewhat accurate deep ball. I’d suggest keeping Holcomb in for the rest of the season, but they we might actually win a few games, and Childress would have none of that. I expect T-Jax to get healthy, and Childress to ride his horse off into the “fire”-y sunset of his NFL career as a joke of a head coach.

5) Penalties. When you develop the reputation as the most penalized team in the NFL, the refs will look for you to make more mistakes. And those calls are more likely to be made. It’s a vicious cycle, and can only be stopped if the players get their act together and keep the actual infractions down to no more than 3 a game…otherwise, we’re sunk at the starting gate (even without Childress at the helm).

6) Dependence on defense. Since the offense is so horribly handcuffed by Childress’ system, and cannot score touchdowns to save its life, the only way we can win a game is by scoring on defense (or special teams). Case in point: In each of the last three Vikings regular season games, the offense has scored only ONE offensive touchdown. ONE TD per game will not get it done in the NFL (Kevin Curtis caught just as many TDs in one game as our offense has scored all season…ha!). The season breakdown:

Offense: 21 points (XP counted as offense)
Defense: 21 points (XP counted as defense)
Special teams: 9 points

You know your offense is bad when they’re scoring at the same clip as the defense. Just pathetic on offense all around…but it starts at the top and that’s why Childress needs to rethink his KAO philosophy and start bringing something new to the table than the dink-and-dunk…or find a boot “K”ing him in the “A” for his “O” coaching job.

State Of The Purple says:

September 24th, 2007 at 12:12 pm

Now…from yesterday’s game:

OK, we should have seriously won, but that’s not saying much considering how bad both teams played. Very reminiscent to the Detroit game, except without all the turnovers (our defense had NO takeaways?!?!), in that both teams did nothing to deserve to win the game. The Chiefs we clueless in the first half, and continued to run LJ straight into the teeth of our defense, again and again. Their playcalling, dare I say it, was worse than ours during that first half. Why any team just doesn’t start spreading it out 4 or 5 wide and hitting the open pockets in our Cover-2 zone again and again beats me. We simply cannot stop the pass without a pass rush, and any smart opposing team should be exploiting that heavily.

The first thing I’m really ticked off about is the officiating. The MeMo pass to Visante was so easily a touchdown that it is inexcusable for the refs to not call it that way. No doubt the league will come back and say so, and as usual all we can do is groan and say the refs screwed us again. The other call that got me riled up yesterday was the “intentional grounding” call on Holcomb. On replay, he clearly was outside of the hashmarks, which I believe is part of the criteria for that call to be made or not made. It was a legal forward pass that either sailed on him or didn’t have enough juice to make the sidelines…either way, he was out of the pocket and outside the hashmarks/tackles.

Secondly, the playcalling was not as bad as it has been in past weeks, but it still stunk. Nothing really new there…the offensive scheming shows no signs of improvement, or that it will ever improve. When that happens, players lose hope, players stop performing, fans lose hope, fans stop paying to attend the games, and (here’s where it’ll sink in with Mr. Wilf), the team starts LOSING MONEY. That in and of itself should be a red flag to Zygi that Childress should be respectfully shown the door sometime this season (the sooner the better), and some new blood be brought onto the Purple staff, at least on offense.

Finally, as much as I hate to say it, we deserved to lose the game. We did nothing to show we wanted to win it, and simply handed KC’s gift right back and said no thanks to a 2-1 record. The spotty offensive production and playcalling, the terrible offensive line, the lack of a pass rush, and the overall ineptitude of Childress lead to the unfortunate conclusion that we’re looking at a 4-12 record…at best. Where/how we get those wins, I am not sure, but my guess is that only home games versus the Raiders (11/18), Lions (12/2), and Redskins (12/23) will be our chances to win. Seriously.

Until next week…I’m out.

Thanks for the assessment State of P.

You tried for some balance to the comments. I wasn’t able to see the game yesterday so am relying only on 2nd hand reports. We’ve all seen enough anemic Viking offense to be able to envision yesterday’s going ons.

The loss-albeit painful-should be put in some perspective. The Vikes have lost 2 games on the road by the margin of a field goal. There are thirteen games left. Its a bit early to be writing off the season.

Things change in the NFL from week to week. The ability of squads to rebound is dramatic as we saw in Philly yesterday. Complex systems adjust. We need the offense to made better adjustments. Use all the tools and quit relying on individual components.

Inserting a 2nd string career backup QB and expecting instant fix was not an answer. Better to be patient and allow the system to develop. This can be slow at times.

Firing coaches, rejigging the starters, scouring the waiver wire for replacements etc. never work. These are easy fixes. Sticking to game plans and making adjustments to fit the situation is going to be more effective.

The events of the past 24 hours have been particularly hard on the fragile internal psyche of the team. These emotions affect their on field performance. Hopefully, attitudes will turn around for teh Packer game.

Losing by a small margin = moral victories = 40+ years of Gopher football.

2 road losses to 2 absolute stink-o teams (in case you missed it, Phi 56, Det 21) = not nearly too soon enough to call for Childress’ head.

In his last 13 games, Childress is 3-10. In the next 13 games, will Childress:

a) go 13 - 0 and make people wonder where the video camera is?

I know the Eagles hung a lot of points yesterday, but their version fo the WCO is so highly modified, it’s kind of hard to call it a WCO anymore.

Been in a meeting, but let me revert to semi-old topic of throw back uniforms. If we could score 56 points a game like Philly did in those Jeff-ugly uniforms, I don’t care if they were pink and green with brown shlt streaks running up the legs, I’d take ‘em.

I find it hard to believe that we are no better on offense after a year to “adjust” to the system and coaches and the addition of some real talent on that side of the ball. The first offensive drive is almost always good and then…

Except for the part about the luxury boxes. Football is about luxury boxes today. You gotta have ‘em to pay for the players.

To make so many personnel changes and have the same problems as last year, i.e. poor pass defense and non-existent offense makes me wonder if the personnel has that much to do with it. To keep it on the sunny side, our run defense is unbelieveable.

marshall70 says:

September 24th, 2007 at 1:41 pm

controller - I believe it has everything to do with coaching and scheme. Chill does not do well with adjustments. That is why we look good on our first drive and rarley after that. As far as defense i have noticed something in watching games where teams also use the cover 2… The middle of the field is getting exposed on passing plays. It happened to Chicago last night. Opposing offenses are focus on underneath routes with room to run and fade routes where the corners are isolated away form the over the top help of the safety. The cover 2 has been en vouge for a while and almost half the league uses it… defensive coordinators are starting to figure it out… also, without unreal playmakers at the LBs spots it’s ahrd to run it the way they did in Tampa.

controller says:

September 24th, 2007 at 2:25 pm

I agree, the other teams make adjustments and win, we just stick to the same plan and eventually lose. From what I hear, even Brad Johnson was not allowed to make adjustments at the line of scrimmage for things he was seeing. So even if our quarterback was experienced, it would be of limited value to us.

[…] Winfield wants Driver matchup September 24th, 2007 ? 11:45 AM by Judd Zulgad Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield had an interesting comment during his weekly appearance on KFAN Radio this morning. Winfield discussed the fact that teams are largely staying away from throwing the ball to his side; he didn?t come out and say it but the reason is because quarterbacks would much rather go after second-year corner Cedric Griffin. This is what happened in the fourth quarter Sunday when Dwayne Bowe caught a 16-yard touchdown pass that proved to be the difference in Kansas City?s 13-10 victory. Toward the end of the interview, Winfield was asked about playing against Green Bay and receiver Donald Driver on Sunday at the Metrodome. ?If I?m not matched up on Donald Driver one-on-one something is wrong,? Winfield said. Driver is the Packers? leading receiver and is tied for eighth in the NFL with 20 receptions for 265 yards and two touchdowns. What does his comment mean? Ordinarily, Winfield lines up at the left corner and Griffin is on the right side. But some times what teams will do is scrap the specific designation and put their top cover corner on the opposing team?s best receiver. The Vikings tried this back in 2005 when Carolina?s Steve Smith absolutely destroyed Fred Smoot. In that case, Winfield rarely if ever got to cover the Panthers? top threat. Griffin has struggled this season with his tackling ? something that is a strength of Winfield?s game ? and it?s obvious Winfield wants to see more action come his way. Having him on Driver would accomplish that. Access Vikings: ? Blog Archive ? Winfield wants Driver matchup […]
