Jeff George surfaces

August 28th, 2006 – 5:01 PM by Judd Zulgad

The former Vikings quarterback hasn’t thrown an NFL pass in five seasons but apparently that doesn’t bother Oakland. The Raiders signed George this afternoon as the league’s transaction wire heated up. The team already has Aaron Brooks, Andrew Walter and Marques Tuiasosopo in camp, which might explain why the Raiders felt it necessary to sign George.

In Philadelphia, the Eagles obviously were smart enough to realize that Hank Baskett probably isn’t the answer to all their receiving problems. The Eagles acquired Donte Stallworth from New Orleans for linebacker Mark Simoneau and a conditional fourth-round pick in 2007. Both players must pass physicals before the trade becomes official. Stallworth has been an underachiever in his NFL career but the change could help him.

Another move appears to be close as the Tennessee Titans are working on signing free agent QB Kerry Collins. This is according to the Tennessean. Collins is 33-years old and a player some Vikings followers thought the team might have an interest in, considering the shaky performance of backup QB Mike McMahon in training camp. Collins made 15 starts for the Raiders last year. Billy Volek has been shaky in training camp and the Titans could be looking to move him. Tennessee would then begin the season with Collins as its starter and Vince Young behind him.

By the way, the agent for Patriots receiver Deion Branch e-mailed today to say they aren’t commenting at this time. Branch, who is holding out, has until Sept. 1 to pursue a trade.

By the way, all appears to be quiet at Winter Park.
