Sorting out the Sorensen situation

September 1st, 2007 – 12:23 PM by Judd Zulgad

Many of you have probably seen the report on Pro Footballtalk .com about the Vikings interest in safety Nick Sorensen, who was released by Jacksonville last week. Sorensen worked out for Cleveland and the plan is for him to come to Minnesota early in the week so the Vikings can get a look at him.

The first response from many is going to be this: Do the Vikings really need another safety? The current list includes Darren Sharper, Dwight Smith, Tank Williams, Mike Doss and Greg Blue. But don’t think of this in terms of the Vikings adding another safety. Think of this as Sorensen potentially filling a bottom roster spot because of his ability on special teams.

The Vikings obviously have concerns about their special teams after the way those units played against Seattle and Dallas. I thought they might not be that worried because many of the guys they plan to use weren’t out there at times and special teams ace Vinny Ciurciu missed both games because of a broken finger.

But adding Sorensen would provide the Vikings with an upgrade in this area. He had been the special teams captain with the Jaguars.

Ron Del Duca, who serves as Sorensen’s agent, said he received a call from a “couple of teams this morning.” There also is the potential Sorensen could sign with Cleveland before the day is finished.

Here is a profile page on Sorensen. Sorensen is entering his seventh season (two with St. Louis, four with Jacksonville) so he is not subject to the NFL’s waiver wire and can sign with any team he wants.

As for the rest of today, NFL teams must submit their cuts by 5 p.m. We’ll be here to get the latest information out, so if you’re in front of your television watching college football and have the high speed fired up stay with us. For information from the rest of the league, I’d suggest checking out profootballtalk.com. It’s a site that few NFL executives will admit to looking at but all of them do.

Finally, the Vikings must cut 22 players total to get down to the 53-man roster limit. They told 11 players on Friday they would be cut. Here’s that list:

Patrick Body, DB

Kyle Cook, C

Ciatrick Fason, RB

Howard Green, DT

George Hall, LB

Cortez Hankton, WR

Norm Katnik, C

Jimmy Martin, T

Billy McMullen, WR

Richard Owens, TE

Stephen Spach, TE
