Evans absent

August 15th, 2007 – 5:45 PM by Judd Zulgad

Newly signed defensive tackle Fred Evans was not at the afternoon practice Wednesday. Evans is scheduled to appear in Miami-Dade (Fla.) County Court on Thursday. He originally pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from a June 23 fight with police in Miami Beach. According to court records, he has been formally charged with two felonies — assault on a police officer and resisting arrest — and one misdemeanor, for trespassing.

The afternoon session, by the way, marked the end of the Vikings’ practices in Mankato. The team officially will break camp on Thursday.

QB WATCH

Tarvaris Jackson threw two interceptions during the morning practice, including one on which he rolled left, tried to force the ball upfield to wide receiver Troy Williamson and was easily picked off by safety Tank Williams.

Jackson did hit a deep ball to rookie wide receiver Justin Surrency but nearly had a third pass picked off by cornerback Charles Gordon.

Brooks Bollinger had an early fumble but later hit wide receiver Martin Nance in the back of the end zone for a touchdown against the first-team defense.

Bollinger showed off his fastball on another completion, squeezing the ball in to tight end Richard Owens despite tight coverage by linebacker Ben Leber.

NEWCOMERS OF THE DAY

Rookie cornerback Marcus McCauley, left, and second-year safety Patrick Body teamed up on Jackson’s second interception.

McCauley got the assist, knocking the ball away from wide receiver Sidney Rice in the end zone, and Body got the pick.

WHO’S HOT

Linebacker Chad Greenway flashed his athleticism early, poking the ball loose from wide receiver Paris Hamilton after a completion.

Cornerbacks Antoine Winfield, Cedric Griffin and Ronyell Whitaker didn’t get any interceptions, but each broke up passes after getting nice breaks on the ball.

WHO’S NOT

Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, left, had two more drops, including what

——————————————————————————–

——————————————————————————–
should have been an easy catch on a little toss from Jackson.
Leber missed a sure touchdown when he dropped a Bollinger pass in the flat that was intended for running back Adrian Peterson.

WHO’S HURT

Guard Adam O’Connor did not practice after suffering a partial dislocation of his left kneecap Monday and will miss time. Coach Brad Childress said the rookie is getting a second opinion.

Linebacker John Kerr (back) was the only other player to miss practice because of injury.

THEY SAID IT

“That’s what you need out of that position.”

- Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell on wide receiver Bobby Wade, who had two 21-yard receptions in Friday night’s exhibition opener against St. Louis and gained most of those yards after the catch.

For Minnesota Vikings receiver Troy Williamson, 2006 was a forgettable year.

If he has it his way, 2007 will be a memorable one.

Williamson, a third-year receiver out of South Carolina and former No. 7 overall pick, has had fans’ high expectations looming over him since entering the league. Aside from being a top-10 pick, he had the burden, at least in the eyes of many Vikings fans, of replacing the legendary and extremely productive Randy Moss. The draft choice used to take Williamson was acquired from the Oakland Raiders in the Moss trade.

Last season, his second in the NFL, was supposed to be a breakout year. However, 11 dropped passes later (second most in the NFL) and Williamson saw extended time on the sidelines. Many of his drops were on long throws that could have been potential touchdowns. Fans were left wondering whether the wideout was a bust.

Getting open and creating separation has never been a problem for Williamson, who possesses tremendous speed. Of course, catching the football has been. And that’s a big problem for a wide receiver.

During the offseason he was determined to fix his problem and become the playmaking receiver the Vikings thought they were getting when they selected him in the 2005 draft.

Williamson went to the Nike headquarters in Oregon and found out that his right eye was weaker than his left. In addition to catching approximately 20,000 footballs from a JUGS machine to help his hands, Williamson has been doing hand-eye coordination drills and wearing special contacts Nike made for him.

So far, the results are encouraging. In Friday night’s preseason game against the St. Louis Rams , he caught three passes for 32 yards, including a terrific lunging grab over the middle. More importantly, he finished with zero drops.

In practice on Sunday, Williamson went almost full extension in making a catch deep down the left sideline, a ball he almost assuredly would have dropped last season.

“He’s been taking his game to the next level,” receiver Bobby Wade said.

Now it’s just a matter of Williamson continuing to gain confidence and show the same kind of results in the regular season. If he does, it will provide a big boost for quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and the Vikings’ offense.

Woods could be another rising star on coaching staff

Not many average fans have heard much about him, but Vikings defensive backs coach Joe Woods could very well follow in the footsteps of one of his mentors, Mike Tomlin.

It was Tomlin who brought Woods to the Vikings when head coach Brad Childress made Tomlin his first hire as defensive coordinator when he took the Vikings job.

After 12 years in the college ranks, he was hired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a defensive quality control assistant, where he worked closely with Monte Kiffin, one of the original gurus of the Tampa-2 defense.

When the Vikings hired Tomlin a year ago, Kiffin couldn’t have spoken more highly of the young coach who is now the Pittsburgh Steelers head coach after just one season with the Vikings as their defensive coordinator.

At the time, in regard to Tomlin, Kiffin told VU: “You just knew that eventually he would be a defensive coordinator and he’ll have an opportunity to be a head coach some day. He’s a great teacher, a great motivator. He has very good people skills. He’s just an exceptional coach. He’s got the whole thing.”

But Kiffin also raved about the upside potential of Woods. “You got another good coach, a secondary coach by the name of Joe Woods, who’s going to be outstanding,” Kiffin said. “He was our quality control coach. He worked with me really close the last two years. He was so good that Mike took him as his secondary coach.”

On the field, Woods shows perhaps the most energy of any of the team’s coaches. He has a lot of bounce in his step and exudes enthusiasm, confidence and intensity. The players seem to really respond to him and it would appear that he gets the very most out of his entire group of players.

The rapid development of Cedric Griffin as a rookie last season is one example of the influence Woods has on his players. The shining star from this year’s rookie crop is third-round pick Marcus McCauley, who has looked like a first-round pick from the very outset.

It helps to have some talent, and the team’s personnel department has given Woods plenty of talent to work with, but he has done a really nice job of teaching the fundamentals and building the confidence of his players so that their natural athletic ability can simply take over.

That said, don’t be surprised if Woods is eventually pursued to become a defensive coordinator in the not-to-distant future.

Wade looks like a fit at the “Z” catch-and-run position

Free agent acquisition Bobby Wade looks like a nice fit for the Vikings offense based on training camp practices and his early preseason action. In practices, Wade has consistently navigated his pass routes effectively and has rarely dropped a ball, with only an occasional look down the field. While technically a starter, the key role for Wade is as the slot receiver in three-wide receiver sets.

“That’s what you need out of that position,” offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell said. “He is playing the “Z” position for us and that is a catch and run position.”

The coaches have also been impressed with Wade’s leadership and other intangibles.

“The first thing you have to point to is his leadership,” according to Bevell. “He has great work ethic and great leadership with the young guys. He’s played, guys know that he’s played; he’s done a nice job when he has been in there so they already respect him as a player. He was able to come in here quickly and kind of take over that leadership role, which was lacking at the position and he was able to help out right away.”

I Forgot about Sharper. Yes, he’s old. Fire him. He’ll be gone next year anyway. That would be pretty surprising if the cut HIM. They’re going to have to cut loose a decent safety. Might as well be Sharper — remember he used to be a Puker. I still haven’t really forgiven him for that.

I bet Winfield is gone next year also. Isn’t he up for a new contract? He’ll be too pricey. Cornerbacks can really rake in the coin. Lucky for us we have two serviceable lower round young guys (Griffin, McCauley — maybe I’m jumping the gun a bit on McCauley).

What about Dovonte Edwards? Is he good?

After 20 days of two-a-days, meetings, scrimmages, workouts and dorm food, training camp has finally come to a close for the Vikings. Camp may be over, but important questions remain. Who will start at right guard? Who will start at defensive end? Will the offense score any points? These questions will eventually answer themselves, but until then, players and coaches are simply ready to head back to Minneapolis.

“People are starting to get a little bit feisty,” said Brad Childress. “They kind of get that way toward the end of training camp, but I’m big on getting away. I think that’s part of the team building process.”

Players spent the entire camp riding bikes, eating cafeteria food and rooming in the dorms. Curfew was 11 p.m. each night. Apparently, Childress’ team building idea worked well.

“[Camp] symbolizes a place where we come together and get camaraderie and basically join as a unit and go through these tough times,” said Dontarrious Thomas, “and know that each and every one of us has been through the same thing. We have each other’s backs.”

For wide-eyed rookies, training camp is about learning, improving, and building trust with fellow teammates. But rookies, just like old veterans, also become tired of the three-week grind.

“I think all of us are ready to be out of here,” said Tyler Thigpen. “My first [camp], it wasn’t as bad as everybody said it was going to be. It’s training camp, so it’s not like it’s the funnest thing, but I felt like we got a lot accomplished here.”

Another rookie, Sidney Rice, arrived at training camp on Saturday, July 28, after a one-day holdout. By Saturday night, he was in the trainer’s room, hooked up to three liters of I.V. fluid. After a few days, Rice eventually became used to the heat and used to the grind of two-a-days.

“It was a really good experience,” said Rice. “It was tough, and as long as you can overcome adversity, you’ll be fine. We came out here, my first training camp, and everybody showed me the ropes and how to get through it.”

Rain forced the Vikings into the field house for the first time all camp Wednesday morning. Players practiced in shorts, and they only ran at half speed — a disappointment for fans who turned out for fan appreciation day. However, the entire team spent 20 minutes signing autographs for kids after morning practice.

According to Childress, Viking players signed over 15,000 autographs over the past three weeks in the autograph tent alone. Not to mention the thousands more players signed to and from practice. Darren Sharper is itching to get back to Minneapolis, but he appreciates the support of Viking fans.

“Well it’s always a pleasure to come down to such a beautiful place like Mankato,” said Sharper. “You get to see the nice scenery, the farms. When we were driving here, you get to smell the nice aroma of manure when you hit about 20 miles from Mankato… We get to check out a lot of the nice spots they have here, the nicer restaurants. Red Lobster, which is always a fine place to eat… We definitely get some culture down here. It’s a nice place, we always enjoy coming down here. The fans are great, on a serious note,” said Sharper. “They always come down and support us, and we have great time.”

One big change during camp this season was the way Brad Childress ran his practices. Childress eliminated almost every tackling drill, and players never wore full pads in the afternoon heat.

“I would say in a physical nature, it’s been a little lighter than it was last training camp,” said Sharper. “I think coach Childress made it less physical. It still was a physical camp, but a slight bit less than it was last year.”

Despite camp being less physical, the Vikings still lost a handful of players to injury. Dan Mozes, Rufus Alexander and Jason Glenn all went down with season-ending injuries (or in Glenn’s case, career-ending). Adam O’Connor is expected to miss significant time with a knee injury as well. Wendell Mathis missed more than a week with a back injury, and the Vikings eventually waived him.

A number of other players missed practices with various strains, dings and bruises. Now that training camp is over, players will have some more time to rest. But that doesn’t mean the Vikings are finished working.

“I think we’re on schedule where we want to be,” said Sharper. “We still have three preseason games left, so it’s still a process of getting better and improving. We still have a long way to go. camp is over here in Mankato, but we still have some days left when we get back to Winter Park. We’ll still be in training camp mode.”

Dontarrious Thomas echoed the same sentiment.

“Just because we’re breaking camp doesn’t mean we’re breaking camp for good,” said Thomas. “We still have to go in and continue to work hard at Winter Park.”

The Vikings have a team bowling outing scheduled for Wednesday night. On Friday night, the team plays preseason game number two, against the New York Jets. Childress said each quarterback will play one quarter, starting with Tarvaris Jackson. He’ll be proceeded by Brooks Bollinger, Drew Henson and Tyler Thigpen, presumably in that order. The first team offense will play the entire first half, which means Bollinger will take snaps behind Matt Birk and company.

The offense moved the football considerably well against the Rams last weekend, however, the only touchdown of the game came on a Dontarrious Thomas interception return for a touchdown. Sidney Rice downplayed the lack of scoring, and instead shifted the focus on taking baby steps.

“We just want to execute on our plays,” said Rice. “As individuals and as a team, execute on what the coach asks us to do. That’s why we practice.”

According to Childress, the first team defense will also play the entire first half. Ray Edwards will get the start at right end. Erasmus James is likely to be held out, because he’s going through some of that muscle soreness most guys experience during the first week of training camp.

While depth isn’t a concern at defensive end, depth at linebacker is a different story. The Vikings lost two men, Alexander and Glenn, to injury last week. Vinny Ciurciu and Heath Farwell are used primarily on special teams, which puts extra pressure on E.J. Henderson, Chad Greenway, Ben Leber and Dontarrious Thomas to remain healthy and productive.

“We’re still solid at linebacker,” said Thomas. “We still have our three main core guys, and hopefully we can keep them healthy throughout the season.”

As always, Friday’s game can be heard on KFAN, 5:00 pre-game, 7:00 kickoff.

Hopefully Darren Sharper and company can find their way to the airport without stepping in any fresh Mankato manure.

Today at camp was kinda pathetic. It was indoors because of the rain. And it being the last day everyone was kinda just giving half A$$ed effort. Kliensasser was used quite a few times. If that actually means anything. I did get to see dwight smith and sharper tossing the ball around. In which smith did a renditon of his touchdown dance. then sharper ran up behind the ball and proceeded to air hump it while slapping its A$$. Hopefully that is not too graphic if it is I appologise. It was quite a site to see. If they do that during a game I think I will laugh my butt off. One thing I notice about smith is he walks with his whole body. Hes rotating his shoulders hips.. Gives him a funny swagger. Memo wore knee high white socks found that intersting. the only way they could have been better is if they were striped. It appears that some of the vikings cheerleaders gained cup sizes during the off season .. they must be working out… Well those are my highlights of the last day of camp.

Vikings head coach Brad Childress revealed his plans to the media today for the quarterback rotation for Friday night’s game in New York against the Jets.

Tarvaris Jackson will play the first quarter, Brooks Bollinger the second, Drew Henson the third and Tyler Thigpen the fourth. Childress also indicated that most of the starters will play much of the first half so that Bollinger gets time with the first team, as well.

Childress wants Bollinger to have a fair look with a better supporting cast around him, but it is clear that Jackson is still very much the frontrunner for the starting job moving toward the regular season.

This will be the first legitimate chance for Henson to show what he can do in a preseason game with the Vikings. Thigpen was No. 3 off the bench against the Rams last week and Henson did not play.

All indications are that Thigpen is ahead of Henson, who has not had a particularly good training camp to this point, so his performance in the third quarter this weekend will be critical to his long-term future with the Vikings.

In other notes, Childress has indicated that he will play it safe with defensive end Erasmus James, who was activate from the Physically Unable-to-Perform List early this week as he comes back from knee surgery a little less than a year ago.

Childress doesn’t want to rush James back too soon until he gets his legs under him and regains confidence in both wheels.

Meanwhile, it looks like just about everyone else will be up for Week 2 in the preseason, including defensive end Khreem Smith who has also missed time with a sprained knee. Smith was having a good camp before tweaking his knee and had shown lots of flashes as an edge rusher.

Don’t get too excited about the young Defensive backs until you see them against a real QB. T-Jack is not real QB yet. You could have brought 6 guys in off the street and they would have looked as good as our guys did in training camp.

The Pioneer Press outright makes stuff up in their “shhhhhh don’t print that columns” They will act like they are making news in a couple of days when they put that rumor to rest.

Childress for better or worse is of the stuborn type. I cannot see him changing that now

Monctonvike says:

August 15th, 2007 at 9:51 pm

I am not sure if he is or not. He must be soon he has been with the steelers for awhile now.

4Ever Viking says:

August 15th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

What good would Warner be to us now at this time of the year? That question was asked on another blog and it’s a good one! It’d take awhile to learn the offense.

MudHenVikeFan says:

August 15th, 2007 at 9:53 pm

I was skeptical as well. Why would AZ give him up without solid compensation in a trade, which isn’t going to come from a team where he’d serve the same mentor/back-up role.

4Ever Viking says:

August 15th, 2007 at 9:55 pm

here ya go Warner news. Fox reported (speculated..whatever)

MudHenVikeFan says:

Monc’s right though (nothing unusual there), Fox only passed on a rumor started at the Press.

Monctonvike says:

August 15th, 2007 at 9:59 pm

I looked it up and as best as I found I don’t trust the source but it looks like he is signed up until 2008

4Ever Viking says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:00 pm

Click a link further in that blog and it DOES go back to Charley Walters of the PP!! Ha ha ha All he says is that there’s buzz that the Vikes are interested in Warner. The only buzz there is, is in Charley’s HEAD!!!

Monctonvike says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:01 pm

Warner would be a great mentore for a young QB that is why they are keeping him.

He should still be starting somewhere actually its money that keeps him from not signing as no one is gonna sign a QB for a big contract that is like what 37.

MudHenVikeFan says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:03 pm

Looks like the Vikes-Jets game will be on Fox Friday night, but my wife told our 9-year old she could have friends over to watch High School Musical 2. Boy that’s going to be tough to decide…hang out with half dozen little girls screaming about how cute whoever is, or watch the Vikes in the solitude of my home office.

4Ever Viking says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:05 pm

Hangout with the girls watching the game. teach them the finer points of football and show them pictures of the cheerleaders!!!

Jake says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:07 pm

Why would AZ let Warner go?

Why would Vikes want him?

Makes no sense.

All the Sirius NFL guys keep yapping about the Vikes’ rumored interest in Kelly Holcomb but I have new idea if that’s current or just something that somebody heard once and keeps recycling.

Maybe they seriously are just going to go with what they have. Kind of looks like it at this point.

I’d rather watch Tarvaris than any of the re-treads they can pick up now. He might be good. Dude looked damn fast on that bootleg last week. I don’t think I’ve seen that gear from him before. I hope he learns to just commit and go for it once he starts to take off.

And he’s got a killer arm. I’m rooting for him.

I’m not expecting much at all from this team this year, but who knows? They’ve got a bunch of young, talented kids. Maybe they’ll gel. Unlikely — but weirder things have happened in the NFL.

Jake says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:09 pm

supposed to say “no” idea not “new” idea. oops. I suck.

MudHenVikeFan says:

The Mrs. is a cheerleading coach so I’ll leave that to her…I’d be fine with being their football mentor, but somehow I doubt they’d appreciate it.

Monc= agree’s with Jake

4Ever Viking says:

Monctonvike says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:19 pm

MudHenVikeFan says:

August 15th, 2007 at 10:58 pm

That was pretty good…especially liked Hutch and Birk giving the equipment guys a hard time, “Aw, they’re just about average; other teams have better” and the trainer basically calling T-Rich a wuss for coming in to get a cut bandaged (Sharper had delivered a blow). Only downside, it was taped before AD got there.

Monctonvike says:

August 15th, 2007 at 11:24 pm

well hopefully it will replay when I go home in half an hour or so.

think Shianco will win the starting job from KLIENdropper. I hope so because if he doesn’t we maybe in trouble.

KatoVikesFan says:

August 15th, 2007 at 11:37 pm

Monc - I have to agree with you about the Kliendropper. He may be a good blocker, but I wouldn’t trust him to catch a pass any further than I could throw him… and that isn’t far.

I will have to try to catch some of that replay on NFLN tommorrow morn. I don’t have NFLN at home… only on the cellphone (Sprint), so it’s a very small screen, but hey, it’s the Vikings, so it may be worth it…

Monctonvike says:

August 15th, 2007 at 11:49 pm

That position will be very important this year for us. T-jax will have many dump offs and check downs, our wr’s have to step up but its pretty standard for a d to do that against a rookie QB until he can prove he can play against the eight man fronts. The running game TE’s need to help take some pressure off of T-jax.

I cannot believe I am talking about special teams but they will be important for us. especially in coverage we need to help our D by having the other team pinned back. The other thing is regardless of wether we score alot we need first downs to rest our d. The Defense is our strenght I think most great teams start with D and a running game. While the vikes might not be great we are headed in the right direction for that. The fact that T-Jax can run is encouraging this may help take some pressur of as they will have to account for that as well, however this worries me as Bollinger as our starting QB also more than worries me .

Lost Viking says:

August 16th, 2007 at 12:28 am

Just speculating, Monc on your good question off the top regarding why Vikes picked up on DT, Fred Evans.

Ex-Miami Evans has a serious legal case or two before the judge in Dade County. Mr. Evans lawyers may have decided that it would behoove Mr. Evans if he appeared before His Honor with solid employment prospects awaiting him in another state. The judge may decide that the case should be put aside until the end of the season or that some consideration should be given to a person in pursuit of a job.

A couple of phone calls from an agent to former Miami front office men results in temporary employment in Minnesota. No league sanctions so sentencing Mr. Evans would result in termination of employment.

Viking may not plan to put Evans on the roster but, then again, they may find a spot. Initially thought that Vikes front office may have considered a trade of 2008 FA Spencer Johnson but that is sheer speculation.

In the meantime even the possibility of employment may keep Freddie out of the slammer for until after January. Even if he’s cut at the end of the month he may not stray too far from the training facility and really, who else is going to want him?

King: I got it working. Did a Google search and found a fix that gamers came up with for something called “Command & Conquer” that was having the EXACT same problem. Some notes from the Vikings preseason through Game 1:

• Bollinger beat out T. Jax for the starting QB position
• T. Will returned two kickoffs for TDs in the opening game
• AD’s first touch was a 93 yard TD scamper
• If our QB situation echoes that of what the game indicates we’re in big trouble. Bollinger has about 20 yards worth of throw in his right arm
• I traded 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounders in 2008 for Calvin Johnson. Screw realistic!
