Peterson sits out
August 7th, 2007 – 12:50 PM by Judd ZulgadRunning back Adrian Peterson was on the field for the morning practice Tuesday but did not take part. Peterson suffered a hip pointer last week, and coach Brad Childress said the team doesn’t want to push the rookie.
Meanwhile, receiver Billy McMullen took part in his first practice of training camp after being on the non-football injury list because of a calf problem. Rookie receiver Sidney Rice (hamstring) also was back on the field. Linebacker Ben Leber (calf) returned but was limited in his work.
Sitting out Tuesday morning: Receiver Aundrae Allison (hamstring), cornerback Ronyell Whitaker (ankle), defensive end Khreem Smith (ankle/knee), running back Wendell Mathis (muscle strain), linebacker John Kerr and receiver Cortez Hankton. Running back Mewelde Moore missed a second day of practice to be with his wife, who gave birth to the couple’s first child.
A few other notes:
– Artis Hicks seemed to get the majority of the reps with the first team at right guard but Anthony Herrera did receive some time with that unit for a second consecutive day.
– Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson got off to a rough start in team drills when he made a poor throw in the direction of Chester Taylor. He then overthrew Bobby Wade deep down the right side. Jackson, though, rebounded by making one of his best passes of camp on a deep route down the middle to Bobby Wade. The normally sure-handed Wade failed to hang onto the ball as cornerback Charles Gordon covered him.
– Gordon had a good day of practice, breaking up several passes.
– Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe made a nice catch of a Jackson pass on a seam route for a 20-yard gain. Shiancoe got the best of safety Greg Blue to catch the ball.
– Rookie linebacker Rufus Alexander picked off a Brooks Bollinger pass after it was deflected by running back Ciatrick Fason during a team portion.
– During seven-on-seven, receiver Troy Williamson made a nice catch of a 40-yard pass from Jackson deep down the sideline. Cornerback Cedric Griffin was covering Williamson. On the next play, Jackson thew a pass that Williamson had no chance of catching.
– Childress had a long talk with rookie Chandler Williams at one point. Most likely it was about the art of running the proper routes in the offense.
– Childress said defensive end Erasmus James (knee) is close to coming off the physically unable to perform list.

Tarvaris Jackson just connected on a 50-yarder down the left sideline to Troy Williamson. The pass was well thrown and well defended by Cedric Griffin. But Williamson hauled in the ball and held onto the ball after hitting the ground.

You can count Tarvaris Jackson’s completed bombs on one hand. But since I’ve been to every practice, I can say with confidence that his lack of long ball completions isn’t entirely his fault. He throws a beautiful deep ball, but his receivers have dropped some on-target passes. Just now, he had a nice one to Todd Lowber. But Lowber, who had a full step on his defender, flat dropped the ball.
GPG-You can wear what you want. After all the beer maybe we can convert you to the good side of the force. Purple and Gold.

buster: never said he was. i was simply stating that he may grow more comfortable with the game as the season progresses. i dont think that is impossible at all. i never expected him to win more than 5-6 games anyways. it’s his first full year behind center.
I hope you’re right dre. That would be the best scenario for this team. Otherwise the Vikings will be looking to take a QB in the 1st round in next years draft. I believe the reason why Chili didn’t look at any free agent QB’s is because of the chance he took on T-Jax and if he did, it would make him look bad for trading up to take a relatively unknown QB from a DII school.

Artis Hicks is listed as the number one RG on the depth-chart, but Anthony Herrera continues to get first-team reps. Prediction: Herrera wins the starting job, and rumors fly that Hicks will be traded along with a fifth-round draft pick for Donovan McNabb.
Receivers Sidney Rice and Billy McMullen got back onto the practice field after being inactive for several days. Aundrae Allison is still out. Chandler Williams had a rough practice, and afterward got a stern talking-to from Brad Childress and receivers coach George Stewart reports Sean Jensen. Prediction: Chandler Williams goes the way of Chandler from Friends. Billy McMullen winds up our number 1 receiver this year, catching an impressive 25 balls for 170 yards.
