While we wait for Kevin Curtis and his newly-crowned agents, Bruce and Ryan Tollner, to choose between the Eagles, Lions, Giants and Vikings, let’s review some of the free-agency nonsense that has taken place so far:
Leonard “Zero Pro Bowls” Davis gets $18.75 million guaranteed, including a $16 million signing bonus, in Dallas? And now they’re moving him to guard?
Dewayne “Zippo Pro Bowls” White gets five years, $29 million, including $13 million guaranteed — or nearly a cool mil per career sack — to leave Tampa for Detroit.
Guard Derrick Dockery gets the same deal from Buffalo — seven years, $49 million with $16 million guaranteed — that Steve Hutchinson got from the Vikings last year. And then guard Eric Steinbach gets an even sweeter deal — seven years, $49.5 million with $17 million in guarantees — from Cleveland. I could go on and on.
And if you don’t think the salary structure getting all out of whack won’t affect locker rooms down the road, see Lance Briggs in Chicago. He’s getting $7.2 million this year as the Bears’ franchise player, yet he’s ticked off and doesn’t want to play another down for them. Why? Because he knows Adalius Thomas got $20 million guaranteed from New England.
The Vikings aren’t the only team trying to maintain some form of common sense in a year in which too many teams are paying “A-plus” money to “B-minus” players.
“I think some (teams) are sitting back and refusing to join in when it comes to overpaying players they don’t think are worth it,” Cardinals Vice President of Football Operations Rod Graves told reporters this week.
Teams must spent at least 85.2 percent of the $109 million salary cap. That’s about $92.9 million. The Vikings, like many other teams, seem to be targeting the minimum number, which, given the field of available players, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Especially if next year’s crop of free agents turns out to be better.
I’m not convinced the Vikings know what they’re doing. But I wouldn’t butcher them because they chose not to give a Daniel Graham $30 million over six years, including $15 million in guarantees.

The problem with the ‘Value Theory’ is this O needs some marquee player to keep bums in the seats. At least pick up a reasonable RB

I wouldn’t mind the Vikings only having signed two free agents if the guys they’d signed were people who had proven themselves anywhere near worthy of their contracts. We don’t need to take chances on unproven players if we can use the same money to obtain proven players. I would have liked to have seen either Drew Bennett or Kevin Curtis signed by now. Bennett’s gone, and Curtis will likely sign elsewhere. Sorry, but I don’t see us getting any better at the WR position without making a trade, and I’m not holding my breath on that.
Maybe we should get a pool going to guess when Childress and Speilman will be fired. That might be the most fun we have this coming season.
Any word on whether the Vikes might trade their No. 7 and maybe some lower rounders for Larry Fitzgerald? All of that talk seems to have simmered down in the last month.
A Fitz trade isn’t gonna happen.
Arizona’s number 5 spot is shaping up to me as the most interesting in the draft. The rumours is Houston swapping w/ Redskins’ Snyder for 6th spot to take Quinn ahead of us.
I don’t see any incentive for Phoenix to make a trade like that.

I’m not in the habit of defending the Vikings, but I will point out that Wade’s base pay in 2007 is less than a million, and his guarantees I believe are about $4 million. Some would argue even that’s too much, but, geez, someone has to line up at receiver.
Plus, there has to be a desire on the player’s part to come here and spend at least another year watching Tarvaris run around as the lead Keystone Kop as he learns how to play QB in the NFL.
If you’re Drew Bennett, do you come here or go to St. Louis? And how much more money than he got from the Rams (six years, $30 million) do you think it would have taken to get him to come here?

Whisenut hasn’t revealed much in FA on roster direction. They need a LT but Thomas may be gone before the #5 pick. Vikes trade up is realiztic. Fitzgerald less so.

The reality is that a lot of teams are waiting around this Free Agent season because a) the pickings are slim, and b) many will wait and see who gets cut from someone else’s roster. There will still be a player or two with some horsepower left that gets axed because of financial reasons or an unexpected training camp by an up and comer.
That being said, the Vikes seem a little too calm for a team that has a whopping three receivers on the roster.
I have an idea. Let’s make Bollinger our starting Quarterback and put TJack at wideout. If he’s athletic as Childress says he is, that should work.

The Vikes need to get McCardell, as old as he is. Someone needs to mentor Williamson et al, as C.C. did to Randy Moss. And there certainly hasn’t been any wideout on the roster that could have done that the past couple of years.

Mark, your Value Approach to FA is better than ‘conspiracy theory’. You seem to suggest Vikes better get O stability @ QB first. This will attract future FA class. It will be cheaper/more effective to start w/ QB -maybe Schaub/Quinn/etc

I personally think that the Vikes have overpaid all of the signings so far. The team was so close last year before Childress took over and took the heart and soul out of this team. I don’t think second tier players are the answer. In my opinion, and we all have one, the Vikes need to go after Calvin Johnson with all they have. Don’t waste another dime on second tier players.
We could possibly have a reincarnation of the Culpepper, Moss days. This time they could get some help from their D.

For the record it’s “Spergon” Wynn and as a DC resident I was in the stands in Baltimore for the first game of the Tice era and Wynn’s last game as a Vike. I never thought I would seen an uglier Vikings game from an offensive standpoint but this past season, especially the SF game, surpassed even that.
What do you think Williamson’s chances of turning things around are? I mean, the guy’s not totally incapacitated and if they could get a coach that could get him some confidence (and a fair amount of stick-um), isn’t it possible he could still come through?
Okay, back to football. I know I posed this question last night but I’ll try again. If Chili Dawg goes 8-8 this year, will he be fired? My answer is YES! I think 5-11 and some blackouts will give Zygi a hint. God I hope there’s no blackouts, I’d be forced to listen to Paul Allen on the radio. “Oh God the humanity!”
SK - I think someone else on here said this same statement about Williamson… You cant teach someone speed but you can teach them to catch. I am hoping the same thing because with his speed he could develop into a good receiver.
He certainly has not impressed us yet but there is still hope.
SixKings, slim and none! The problem is they’d need to get another wide receiver with surgical skills to remove the lobster hands Troy Williamson.
I think Childress a) does not know how to properly delegate authority, b) recognizes good character well enough, but talent is sacrificed at the same time c) is proof that being a coordinator on a decent team doesn’t autimatically make you head coaching material.
I think this is his one and only shot as a head coach in the NFL.
I think Williamson will be fine. Its in his head and I think only time will help that.
I dont think Chili will be fired this season reguardless of record as long as they are “going in the right direction” whatever that means. But if BC, Wilf , and Speilman are committed to building through the draft and with younger FAs, you cant become a winner in a year or two, more like 3-4yrs IMHO.

Did you want the Vikes to pay Bennett $30mil, Stallworth who is in the NFL substance program, Graham $30+ mil? The FA pool was VERY shallow this year and so the few out there were way over paid. IMHO, I would have like us to try get Thomas from Baltimore, and address the right side of the OL, IF the prices were right. The draft is deep at WR and DE so over paying for those positions in FA would be foolish IMHO.

Nope, I think those 3 players there are a little over rated and wouldnt really make our team any better than it was last year. My comment stated that the draft has to be better then FA meaning that hopefully the players available in the draft will pay out better than what has been available durring FA. And hopefully the Triangle will be able to make the right decisions durring the draft. guess I should have been more clear.
I agree. I hope we dont sell the farm for Johnson. While he would be nice to get we need all of our picks, plus. I hope we trade down and I like Meacham later in the first. I am not a fan of Jarrett. I hope we go Meacham or Ginn.

Our defense improved tremendously last season. I think we are only a couple offensive playmakers and another good corner away from being champions.
PG, LV is right. Studwell’s track record isn’t exactly stellar when it comes to 3rd-7th rounds. You don’t like Jarrett, I don’t like Ginn for your same reasons. The Vikes need Calvin Johnson…a sure thing for the next 10 years.

I think Ginn had a great year last year but I dont think he is our answer. I think that if we dont get CJ that we get the next best player at a different position that where we are hurting and then pick up our receivers in a later round. I dont think we should take Quinn unless we can use him as trade bait.

We dont need all of our picks if we reach for a 4th or 5th rounder in the second. But if we are going to build a team trhough the draft, we HAVE to evaluate talent well and draft well. While Calvin Johnson looks to be a stud, I just dont want a Hershel Walker type trade to get him, one guy (especially a WR) isnt going to get us over the hump. Getting Bevell fired wont help much, Chili calls the plays, Bevell is an OC by title only, BC runs the offense, sort of.

Calvin Johnson is no more of a sure thing than any other draft pick, the NFL is a different game. Im not huge on Ginn either but Id prefer him to Jarrett. I really think Calvin goes 1 or 2 so we have no chance him what so ever. No way can we trade up the 1st spot, no way Detroit trades with us so we can get him. I say if we dont get Johnson, trade down and pick up a WR later and an additional pick.
Our offence was restricted in the play calling last year. How about this year we allow Bevell to do the Job he is entitled to.

Re: The Vikings and their two free-agent investments on offense — tight end Visanthe Shiancoe and receiver Bobby Wade. The talk in league circles is that they were the only serious contenders. So why did they fork over so much money?
Vikings Rock hits it on the head - we had much better personnel last year than the record indicates and it’d not going to matter if we trade up and get CJ (which would be cool) or trade down and get quantity. This teams only hope is if Childress relinquishes the play calling and concentrates on being a head coach - and I truly hope he does. Otherwise, we’re looking at another very ugly year.
Remember Chili attributed the lack of offense to the players NOT executing what he wanted. So what ever he wanted done, wasn’t done the way he wanted it. Rememeber, he said the offensive play calling was designed to be a kick a$$ offense in his eyes anyways. He did say though, that some of it may be his playcalling, BUT he would look back at the tapes and evaluate that.

Bevell hasn’t proven anything as a play caller. Currently the best recommendation for him is that he’s not Brad Childress. Which, I find pretty compelling. Perhaps Bevell wouldn’t spend all season pounding square pegs in round holes.
On the positive side, Wade was said to excel at medium routes. Which leaves room for interpretation that BC is installing some medium routes this year. Stranger things have happened.

I do remember in one of his appearances he eluded to everyone’s learning including the play caller. At least that’s an indication that he recognizes that he could have done better. Lots of paranoia and egomania in this business I suppose. Every top guy in whatever business you look at surrounds themselves with people smarter than them - please please please let go of the play calling Mr. Childress.
PG, CJ is the “Real Deal” but realistically the Vikes will trade down and pick up Ginn/Jarrett between 13-17 picks.

Agreed! That’s exactly why the players laid down and quit on Chili Dawg in last game against the Rams. What a debacle that was. This clown is being paid 7 figues…7 figures!…and he has commincation problems? YIKES!
I don’t buy the “you have to build through the draft” mentality completely. I don’t discount the draft, it’s critical. But as an every year pipeline is sort of ridiculous. Lower round picks (for at least the first years) ussually are special teams guys with most being out of the league within 5 years. Lower picks are all over the wires and practice squads for filler. There is a deal to be brokered to get CJ, but I doubt our current brain trust’s brains can be trusted to get it done right.
Comparisons to the H. Walker trade are a stretch when it comes to draft picks. For Walker we sent them about 50% of a proven defense plus draft picks. Worst trade ever in any sport.

Brad Childress doesn’t fit the head coach type to me.. He looks, acts more the business office type, upper management in football operations.
Ya gotta have head coach of the the Mike Tomlin type. can communicate with the players, be a motivator and a good sound football mind for both offense and defense. Then surround yourself with similar coaches, but more expert on their area (Off/Def).
Childress just isn’t that type of coach, I’m here to say.
I really beleive the Vikes will take the best player on the board at that time, depending on who it is and if it fills a need. If it’s Quinn, I hope god they have a plan in place to make a trade for more picks.

those “second tier” receivers are all about the same, potential wise…if we trade down 5 spots, we get an extra 3rd and 4th……trade down 10 spots and we get an extra 2nd and 3rd…..and at 17, we still could have the likes of Meacham, Bowe, etc AND two 2nds AND two 3rds. Hmmmmmmm!

Brennan needs to put on some weight if he is to be a higher caliber QB in NFL. Same reason Brody Croyle didn’t go higher in draft, not big enough to sustain hits, made him velnerable to injuries. Although, I think T-Jax will be just fine.
I really do like the Meacham pick. Never looked at him much until dre said somethimg about him. Once I dug a little deeper, he looks like he could be the real deal. Had almost as big of numbers and similar size to CJ. Only knock was he played for Tenessee, which wasn’t as stellar as they could have been.

Didn’t mean to totally discount the draft, said it was critical even. But a team can lose a few (emphasis on few) picks once in awhile and not destroy the club. Detroit has built through the draft for decades, that has worked out well too. We had a 9-7 club, Added talent, and Childress guided it to 6-10. We may have taken a baby step backwards in talent so far this off season, but most of that is still there. This year only, I’d rather throw some picks to get an up and coming star, than throw the cashbox at a #3 receiver like Curtis who benefited heavily from the attention attracted by Holt and Bruce.
I dont really care for Quinn either, but after drafting Tarvaris so high, I just cant see us taking another QB THAT high, to battle it out with him.
We would only trade down 1 Pick as well, although Im not sure who, out of the top 5, are all that super.
I wouldn’t be disappointed to get Quinn, but really, how many young QBs does one team need? Drafting Quinn would be like admitting mgmt made a mistake in T-jack. They don’t seem to readily admit to mistakes in winter park. Certainly more pressing needs. I’d love to see something worked out for CJ, but would be quite happy with a top tier safety, DE or OL. Can’t think of a right guard or tackle worthy of #7, but that might make sense for a trade down.
The thing that nags at me about Tarvaris is he was sooooo reluctant to take over when BJ struggled. I expect coaches to keep a rookie QB on the bench for as long as possible but I want the QB to hate it - not say things like ‘I’m not ready’ or ‘our best chance is to have Brad start’ . . . know what I mean?

I do know what you mean. T-Jack has some physical skills, but those noncompetitive comments didn’t sit right. At the same time, he may have been somewhat realistic. He looked absolutely lost out there. No doubt he wasn’t helped by the offensive scheme. But he really had the “deer in headlights” look.
I was shocked when they benched Johnson. When they drafted T-Jack BC said he was a three-year project. Then he was suddenly ready in game 12?

Just re-read my first post about the “every-year pipeline” and think I see the confusion. My post was poorly worded. Of course you draft every year and each pick is important, though only an educated guess. My point was, some years teams need to restock the shelves nearly everywhere (see Raiders)and some years teams only need a player or two for full-time contributors. The number of picks this year is less important (in my opinion) than the quality.

If trade goes down will Vikes trade down for SF’s # 11 to allow him to select Branch of Michigan? If Quinn & CJ are gone Vikes should also be talking to ATL
I think it is very compelling, given the quantity of needs the Vikings have, to trade down and try to get another 1st round pick. If we can get a lower pick, it would justify a Jarrett or Ginn, and then try and get a pass rusher with the higher pick. However, if Quinn is there, I think we’d be hard pressed to pass on him. I’m just not sold that Jackson, given his performance in games, is even NFL caliber, let alone that he should be a starter for the Vikings.
It reminds me of Matt Schaub. You have this bizarre media frenzy saying how much teams covet him as a starter, yet his in game resume doesn’t really make one think he’s the next Elway, Marino — or even Tommy Kramer.
