The figures

March 3rd, 2007 – 7:48 PM by Judd Zulgad

The numbers are in on the contract for new Vikings linebacker Vinny Ciurciu. The special-teams ace will receive a three-year deal worth about $3 million with a signing bonus just over $500,000.

– This just in as well: Cornerback Fred Smoot has signed with Washington, returning to the Redskins after a unsuccessful two-year stint with the Vikings. Smoot got a five-year deal but if he continues to perform at the level he did in Minnesota it’s unlikely he will last that long in D.C.

Earlier we were talking about the Browns draft pick.

This guesses that if Droughns is cut before his March 15 bonus, they intend on drafting Adrian Peterson.

nmVikingFan says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 8:15 pm

You’d think if they were going to cut him it they would have done it by the start of free agency unless they want to screw him.

Judd - any reason that you know of why the Vikes wouldnt have tried to go after Wes Welker from Miami? Great return guy and good reciever.

nmVikingFan says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 8:38 pm

Wes Welker is a restricted free agent so that involves giving up a draft pick and also Miami would be allowed to match any offer. I just looked it up and the pick is a second rounder. I can see how NE is willing to give up their late second rounder but our early second round choice is a different story.

Canadian Vike says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 8:46 pm

we should give Moss, and Burleson extensions…oh wait..we let them go, cause they could catch the ball..darn it!

Judd Zulgad says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 8:47 pm

bigvikefan,

nm is right on with his Wes Welker analysis. Rick Spielman made it clear today that the Vikings aren’t going to be giving up valuable draft choices and that this team will be built through the draft and signing young free agents. The desire to keep picks is one reason the Vikings have no intention of pursuing Dolphins tight end Randy McMichael, who evidently is available for a first-day draft choice.

Bones says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 8:49 pm

Judd: I know this is an impossible question to answer and you must be sick of hearing it, but you’ve been around these guys: is there any hope of them making the kind of bold move on draft day to get Calvin Johnson?

bigvikefan says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 8:51 pm

still, Wes Welker for a 2nd round pick sounds like a steal to me. At least we would know what we would be getting, as opposed to drafting a wr in the 2nd round.

Bones,

I’m thinking the Vikings brass won’t be willing to give up what it would take to be in a position to get Johnson. You have to figure it would take the No. 7 pick and a few more picks, right? Bigvikefan, I’m just saying that this current front office would not be willing to give up a second-round pick for Welker.

nmVikingFan says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 9:21 pm

I think Childress had shown a willingness to go up and get the players he wants and even to ‘reach’ for players he likes. See Ryan Cook and Tavaris Jackson. I think it’s just a question of how much he likes Johnson as opposed to some of the great defensive players that will surely be available if they stay where they are. In general it doesn’t seem like teams move up into the top 5 except for very very special players and for teams that have very very big needs

This page is pretty interesting. John Clayton of ESPN is speculating that the Lions are setting themselves up to trade out of the number 2 spot. This would make a huge impact on the ability of the Vikings to trade up for CJ. Presumably if someone traded into the number 2 it would be to draft CJ and I’m guessing the Lions being a divisional rival wouldn’t even be willing to deal with us. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=clayton_john&id=2787051
Also the bit on Seahawks trying to sign a guard is pretty funny.

What does nmVikingFan stand for??

PAUL says:

March 3rd, 2007 at 9:52 pm

Judd, Why won’t Childress address the VIkings main needs in F.A.? The addition of a WR and DB are extremely important. Seems they lost out on White from Tampa… Detroit stole him and looks like they’ll steal Curtis as well. The Lions are improving, while the VIkes are staying put. Looks like the Vikings will be contending for last place in the NFC North. As far as the draft, we can’t rely on a rookie worthy of starting being there in any other round other than the first. Yes, we could get lucky and find the diamond in the rough, but, we would be better signing veterans and drafting youth to back them up. That being said, here is a plan: sign the DB from Indy, a WR-make a firm offer for Curtis and get another veteran DE.

Don’t have much confidence in Childress though.

Go Vikes says:

Detroit would never trade up with the Vikes. The is an ‘unwritten’ rule in the league that you do not make trades within your division.

It’s funny how we are guessing to try to figure out what moves these guys may or may not make. I was thinking of listing some of the things we do know to see if we could draw some better conclusions about upcoming moves.

Things like:
-We know they view communication as a competitive disadvantage.
-We know they have been willing to write poison pills in contracts to get their man.

Not so much things like:
-We know Chili eats breakfast at IHOP and steals the menus.
-We know that by week 10 of the 2006 season, any Viking fan who previously had a mustache shaved it off.

But working on that second list could be just as fun.

VikingQueen says:

Kevin and Judd write:

“Shiancoe spent some time Saturday watching film with quarterback Tarvaris Jackson and said he was “tremendously excited” to be a focal point of the offense.”

Tarvaris must be the “this quarterback” Shiancoe was referring to in the press conf.

Great, now everyone knows that the Quinn trip tomorrow is just to scout out what potential trade partners showed up at the workout.

Shiancoe’s going to get in trouble for leaking competitive information like that.

Charch is about the biggest nerd I’ve ever seen, but the guy has a quick wit!

I was really happy the night we signed Smoot. I wanted the Vikes to draft him but they took Bennett that year. Worst free agent signing ever!

I saw somebody asked about Smoot’s contract. I saw five years, $25 million on ESPN but don’t know how much of that is guaranteed.

Bones - There were worse ones. He’s just so damn recent. And awful.

Derek Alexander the WR was pretty bad as well. Thanks for the update Judd, that’ll provide Freddie with plenty of boat fuel!

Anyone know if BJ landed somewhere yet?

Queen, how was your Minneapolis adventure? You’re home kinda early…

VQ, are you giggling?

Bones says:

BJ was scheduled to meet with the Broncos today, no word on if that happened or how it went.

Bones - It was fine. I’m an old lady. Can’t stay out late anymore. Cool place. I’d recommend it. Too damn busy though. Wall to wall people.

TAR - Can’t giggle. I miss him. The photo I took at his locker is terrible, which angers me. Oh well, I’ll always have the memories.

Now, if we keep Bethel Johnson…..

Bones says:

No reports of any Bethel Johnson visits…or Travis Taylor either.
