Having spent his first four seasons in the NFL playing behind Pro Bowl tight end Jeremy Shockey, Visanthe Shiancoe seems like a guy who is just happy to get his chance. Talking to the media this afternoon at Winter Park, Shiancoe described himself as “tremendously excited,” to get an opportunity to play a large role in the Vikings offense.
The fact he received a five-year, $18.2 million contract ($7 million guaranteed) probably did nothing to dampen the enthusiasm of the 26-year old. “I’m ecstatic,” Shiancoe said. “I’m calm right now, but inside I’m all over the place. I’m excited to be here. I’m excited to wear that purple and yellow, and I heard the fans are just terrific here. … I’m really excited about this opportunity.”
Shiancoe (pronounced vi-sahn-tee SHANK-oh), a third-round pick by the Giants in 2003, has not missed a game in his four seasons. He had a career-high 12 catches for 81 yards last season and started four games. “They’re looking for a versatile tight end,” Shiancoe said of the Vikings. “I feel like that’s what I can bring to the table. I can catch and I can block. With this offense and this quarterback and the personnel they have here, I’m really excited to showcase what I can do.”
Ciurciu, meanwhile, was signed by the Panthers as a rookie free agent in 2003. It’s expected his primary contribution will be made on special teams. Ciurciu (pronounced Church-choo) said the Panthers made an attempt to keep him but, “I liked the direction this team was going, and I felt like this was a better fit for me.”
Ciurciu will be reunited with Vikings special teams coordinator Paul Ferraro in Minnesota. Ferraro spent one season as an assistant with Carolina. “It was a big influence, being comfortable with somebody I knew was the coach here,” Ciurciu said.
Exciting times in the life of a Vikings fan…
Thanks Judd.
For that money dude _better_ showcase what he can do.
How much you wanna bet that when Daniel Graham gets paid it ends up being less than this guy…
He can catch and he can block.
That’s sounds like he passed the Viking Test!
That’s = That
Im missing the Eagle connection with these two guys… somebody HELP me PLEASEEEEEE…. How about we get Curtis signed and then horn or Lelie & then Moulds - then some O-line depth…
FIRE CHILDRESS NOW !!!!!!
When all is said and done, it probably will be a pretty good contract. It is front-loaded so that he won’t be earning that much against the cap later (depending on how much is spread out as a signing bonus). Plus 3 years from now, 3.6 mill a year for a TE won’t look so bad.
Wait…they’re giving how much to this guy?!
No wonder he is ecstatic and saying things like “With this offense and this quarterback and the personnel they have here…”
If we want to find out who the QB for next year is, we should ask the new guy. Apparently he knows who “this quarterback” is.
Bones, can I play the role of Fran Foley in the new “Vikings Draft War Room” movie?
I want to be able to yell at Chili
Plus, I know the role won’t last that long and I can get back to blogging.
You’ve got to find one of those “Charlie Brown” sweaters Fran is so fond of…
I think my eyes have been staring at this computer too long. The font of the comments on this blog post are looking a little small. But maybe that is just the knock against them.
It ain’t you TAR, it’s like that on mine as well. Maybe they’re letting Sid handle the blog today…
You meen Sid isn’t preparing the first interview with one of the new most highly paid TE’s in the business? Our brain trust is miles above the rest…you can just feel the goosebumps!!
Sid would make the font LARGER for his advanced years…
For some reason the source for the html on this page is different than it was than for the other blog pages, I think I may have found the reason for the smaller font.
Sid’s 1982 Apple IIe isn’t set up for the Internet…
Thanks for the confirmation about the font size. I feel better.
I don’t know if it will give my eyes a break, but I am going to do some Foley-sweater shopping. Then when I get back I have a few little “updates” to make on my resume, before rehearsing my lines.
Until I get the final script, I am going to use a Foley interview about last year’s draft for rehearsal.
Question: “Does the uncertainty at the top of the draft order make your decision-making more difficult?”
Foley: “I guess I don’t understand your question.”
Question: “Does the fact that teams near the top of the draft have not made clear who they intend to draft make it more difficult for you to focus on the players that you think will be available at seventeen?”
Foley: “No.”
Question: “Have you identified the players that you hope to have an opportunity to select from among?”
Foley: “It’s too early for that.”
Question: “How will the availability of the players that you target as potential draftees affect whether you accept an offer to move down in the draft.”
Foley: “We’ve identified five players that we really like. If only two of those players look to be available when we select we probably wouldn’t trade down—not more than one spot anyway. Understand?”
You’d think he would have upgraded to a Commodore 64C by now…
You know you can change the size of the font.. if you are using Internet Explorer 7 look for the ‘Page’ link that should be in the upper right hand corner of the web browser, there is a text size option there you can select.
Cool, it’s fixed!!!! Now if we could only get rid of Chilli and Speilman as easily as we did the small font…ah, the thought is nice anyways
that’s cool the TE sounds like he is gonna bust his ass, I think he will do fine. Chilly had a good offseason last year. People thought it was risky starting chester taylor as well. So I am not giving him a blank cheque here but I think this guy has something to prove. Extra motivation besides monatary are always a good thing. If I were him I would just be happy to have a slightly better HC now.
My mistake on the font size getting goofed up. Sid had nothing to do with it. At least I don’t think he did.
Thanks Judd! Now can you make Chili go away as easy?
Judd do you thikn this TE guy will do well???
Looks like I have some competition for the Foley role.
Chilli seems to like guys that have little to no wear and tear. If Shiancoe can pull a Chester Taylor, then kudos. There must be a method to the MADNESS! This March Madness!
Monc,
I have no idea. This is a guy who obviously has never really gotten a chance and obviously the Vikings saw something on film that they liked. But will he be able to make a contribution that justifies $7 million in guaranteed money? That’s a pretty good investment. One thing you have to ask yourself about this signing is did the Vikings really like Shiancoe this much or did a guy like Daniel Graham make it clear he was going to take two or three visits elsewhere first?
Don’t think I think Chilly is this amazing coach or anything. I just feel that coach of the Giants is the worst HC in the NFL.
Judd, with the cap space the Vikes have, why do they seem so reluctant to go after much needed impact players? I understand they will try to fill needs in the draft and that FA is down this year, but there are impact players available but the Vikes don’t seem very aggressive when they could be.
I see your point Judd, Do you thikn they may be replacing Jimmy with and possibly are still looking else where?
Let’s not forget we have also signed Spach as well I know we got him off of a practice squad and there is also Hacksaw Dugan.
I look at this spot as an open competition. I am sure however they are planning on keeping this guy. I bet he has a great game against the Giants this year
I agree with you Monc that Chili doesn’t seem to do half-bad when it comes to personnel evaluations.
I really think that he ought to get out of coaching and move in that direction.
Judd: Are you actively trying to swap beats with Lavelle E. Neal III?
$30 million under the cap and we get who?? $18 million for this guy? He will fit right in. Cant get open and drops passes. Must not be a quality eagle available. We already have the worst right guard in the league in Hicks from them. Then again, what does it matter when your QB’s couldnt complete a pass in 7-on-7 drills. God help us. Tice doesnt sound so bad now.
TAR, I about wet my pants after clicking on your Chili link! How’d you do that?
The position we are not getting alot of trafic around is WR, xmas firing might have hurt us in this area or we could be planing to draft multiple wr’s as there is much depth at this position in the draft this year and not as much in FA
Childress’ regime has been very polarizing when it comes to their personnel decisions. This year is Shiancoe, last year it was Ryan Cook and moving up to get T. Jackson.
I have a pair of Oakleys with polarized lenses…
the blog is buggy tonight as aposed to nutty those rumors must end lol
I just don’t think you can keep hanging your hat on the Chester Taylor deal anyway. In my opinion it was a no brainer cuz he was a talent that flashed when he got the chance and waited for his opportunity…but Chilly seems to like to gamble on theses ham-and-eggers and eagles rejects and takes a pass on proven talent…boggles the mind!
The problem with drafting multiple receivers is it doesn’t do very much for this year.
Judd I have a project for you if you are up to it. I could see this as very entertaining. If we are stuck in some slow FA time like we have been this weekend. Is there anychance you could dig up some footage of Chilly when he was a quarter back?
If you or anyone ever finds some please please please post the link
Bones, I’d tell you how I did it, but then Chili would have to kill you.
???
Dumb move. This guy isn’t worth half the money they are going to pay him. And that’s putting it mildly.
FIRE BAD!
So, instead of going after an injury prone backup the Vikings add a injury free hardly used player. How is that a bad move? Sure 7mil isn’t sneezing money, but last I looked Antonio Gates, Tony Gonzalez, or Jeremy Shockey weren’t on the FA market this year.
The moves the Vikings make them come off as NE light, which is a far sight better than being Washington Redskins, Jr.
Here’s to hopeing for the best and expecting the worst.
Hey all - anyone here have the feeling that Chilli Big Dog is a bit paranoid of talented, big name players? It’s almost like if they’ve had success he wants nothing to do with them. Like Tom Kelly use to say. Kirby and Kent made him a lot better manager. Chilli big Dog can’t be a great coach with substandard players.
