Game week finally arrives

September 7th, 2009 – 9:27 AM by Chip Scoggins

Happy Labor Day everyone. We hope you have a safe and enjoyable day.

We’re back at Winter Park where the Vikings have a noon practice as they begin preparations for the season-opener Sunday at Cleveland.

This will be our first chance to talk to Coach Brad Childress about the roster cuts and the decisions that went into setting the 53-man squad.

Check back throughout the afternoon for updates.

If we don’t beat the Brownies by about 21, something is very wrong!

Coach provided a nice summary of changes (mostly improvements) from 2008’s team…let me add one other note that raises expectations: our schedule appears considerably easier than last year’s, although improvements by the teams in our division could largely offset that.

on the backup QB thing, I think Sage ends up #2 and TJoke #3, you don’t pay a guy 3 million a year to be a 3rd stringer..

I’m still not convinced that Jackson won’t be traded at some point once some of the inevitable QB injuries take place

the key will be solidifying a playoff spot as soon as possible, with Carolina, Chicago, and the Giants the last 3 games, it might be kinda tough..

Chip/Judd, I would be most interested to hear what Chili is thinking in terms of depth in the OL. Curious goings-on with signing this new center, the Cooper move, Cook, Radovich, etc. Chili, please tell me you know that the OL, and specifically blitz protection, remains one of the biggest matters on this team.

Could very well be on the QB situation, Jared. I think we all wonder about the lack of work that TJack got in preseason #4. Could have been for several reasons on both sides of whether he goes or stays.

Every coach seems to have some subconscious favorites, guys who look better to them than they really are. I see Brad in that category with Cook and Tahi. Of course, we just see them in games and he sees them every day, but it is hard to see what there is to like in those two guys.

MHV, I agree somewhat with your strength of schedule point, but I am always cautious of that assessment in the pre-season. Teams change rapidly, and besides, we only beat the Lions by a total of, what, 6 points, in those two games last year. If you don’t play well, you can lose to almost anyone.

Still, there does appear to be some merit for how our schedule is favorable, to start the year at least. I also agree that there appears to be improvement in the entire division this year.

AGree, Jared. If there is an advantage to our schedule, we have to be sure we sieze that edge. And if we really want to do something in the playoffs, we gotta get that first round bye and play at home to help our chances.

One minor little thing… I am glad the first Packer game is at home. BF has the Vike fans behind him for that first encounter (if they don’t take the profits and sell their ticks to Puker fans!) I think Favre will be less distracted at Lambut if we have already gone through the first meeting. Veteran or not, the concentration for the first game being at Lambut would have been very difficult to overcome.

Jared Allen says:

the schedule is only ranked on how the teams were last year. starting on Thursday “Strength of Schedule” means exactly squat.

MudHenVikeFan says:

Jared - in general I agree, but I’m not basing my opinion just on published strength of schedule (i.e. last year), but rather where teams seem to be this year (thus my point that our own division has improved)…no doubt there will be surprises in both directions.

This will serve as an excellent fallout zone.

Its sad to read the comments here, before all of the YES I AM, and before the resistance, before the unnamed authors of updates turned their backs on all things civil and decent and worthy of song.

I just read Coach’s 10:33 post and he was so innocent and trusting and he had no idea what was about to happen… it made me cry a little…
