The Vikings final roster cutdown on Saturday left center Jon Cooper as the only undrafted rookie free agent to make the team.
But Cooper’s time on the 53-man roster proved brief. On Sunday, the Vikings waived him and signed center Kory Lichtensteiger.
Lichtensteiger (6-3, 295 pounds), a second-year player out of Bowling Green, was a fourth-round round pick by the Denver Broncos in 2008. He was placed on waivers by the Broncos on Saturday. Lichtensteiger played both guard and center at Bowling Green. Here’s the information on the Vikings website.
Lichtensteiger likely will be the top backup to starter John Sullivan at center.
[…] Jon Cooper was a surprise survivor on cutdown day. Unfortunately, Cooper’s Vikings career would not be a long one. On Sunday the Vikes bade farewell to Mr. Cooper, replacing him on the roster with center Kory Lichtensteiger, who was just waived by the Broncos. […]
I’m OK with this signing, just gotta remember that name. Sounds kind of like the microstate in Western Europe right next to Switzerland.
The NFL is a cut throat business. Hopefully Cooper finds a spot somewhere. But, like a lot of us, eventually he’ll have to find a job and pay the bills.
he’ll be real popular at Oktoberfest
Snead from Ole Miss might lok good in purple next year
I guarantee after the 2009/2010 Super Bowl winning season we will look back and say that the most critical, season altering transaction was the Cooper/Lichetenstein practice squad player swap on September 6th, 2009.
I couldn’t disagree more surf. I think the most vital move, which has been argued a lot here, is who is going to be the #2 QB.
Um, that was sarcasm by the way. Here’s to hoping any #2 QB is only mopping up after the original Gunslinger has put the Vikings up by 21!
FYI: I am the Gunslinger from the Stephen King book series “The Dark Tower”. Not to be confused with a certain #4 that I used to hate for 17 years.
Cooper should go to the practice squad he played well but a little more experience and a little more size at center with lichetenstein.
Hey Judd/Chip: will the Vikings be wearing their home purple or their road whites in the 2010 Superbowl?
Obvious decission Guns. Ya gotta keep Sage at #2. He is more of a pocket passer like Favre. If Favre goes down, and we are moving the ball, you dont change the system. TJack is a whole different ballgame {Wildcat….etc}. If we are good at offensive production and flexiblity, this could create total caos for defenses. But then this is an old debate isnt it. Surf, wouldnt it be spooky, that if Sully gets hurt, your prediction could bear some merit.
The only problem is when we are done winning the super bowl, who will our QB be? There is not going to be a lot of quality at #32
And how will we defend our title without a QB?
Brent, I think if the Vikes won the Super Bowl, no body would really care who we had under center defending our title. Being a Viking fan is (as I have been all my life) is a painful and unforgiving thing to be. Been so close with the right teams so many times and then it doesnt happen.
I think if a Super Bowl title was put under the Vikes belts, then hell, we all might not really care if TJack is our next starter or not. Put Ryan Leaf back there. If my Vikes can have one, just one Super Bowl title, then Im okay with a Detroit Lion/Oakland Raiders type of front office for the next 10 years.
I just want that F*****G TITLE!!!!
oh, and for them to stay in Minnesota
Amen, springfieldian
Well said, or written I suppose, springfieldian. My thoughts exactly. Just 1.
Your all drunk every last one of you
I am a lucky man…my wife gave me tickets to the Oct 5th Vikes/Pack game at the Dome. Along with that, I also got a Peterson jersey for the game. I am stoked…living in TX I don’t get to see many games in person. Flying up with three friends, although I’m the only Viking fan…they’re going just to go see a good game (I hope)!
Now, I just need my Vike’s to WIN that game!!
CTV
nice gift….what will you give her in return?
GO VIKES!!!!!
So we didn’t keep Cook as a back-up center. I am open to hearing reasons why we DID keep him. If he is our back-up to whoever gets hurt first, I have a concern. Apparently, no one in camp looked better for that role. (sigh)
Cook may be the in-game back up center. While the Vikes have 8 OL on the roster, my guess is they only activate 7 on game day unless injuries elsewhere take up the 5. Jimmy Kennedy should be a pretty constant inactive as well.
Glad and a bit surprised that Ian made it through waivers. Radovich too.
Krugir, she got herself a Burberry(sp?) wallet…I never knew what Burberry was until I saw the bill…that much for a freaking wallet?? Apparently that is an exclusive brand!
Anyway, she did really GOOD!!! I am gonna hate to see the next credit card statement!!!!

wHAT is a Burberry? Just a wallet? Why can’t I haveone?
homeskillet, I had never heard of Burberry until then…I guess ask any woman and they probably know it…
A very expensive brand!!!
Still no FB to replace Tahi. Darn I guess I’ll just have to keep hoping.
Gunslinger (or should I say Roland!),
Do you get upset when you hear about the man in black.
Or how about “ditta chick”?
Seriously though, I like that we got Ian on the practice squad, I hope they finally let him play special teams (he REALLY wants to do special teams).

so if Cooper clears waivers does he replace someone on the practice squad? I mean, he made the regular roster….or maybe with signing the other center he’s history, huh?
CTV…..I hope it’s purple leather, that would be cool!
GO VIKES!!!!!
OK… with the possible exception of another tweak or two, our roster is set and it is time to get down to business. What do we know has changed from last year?
-We have a very capable starting QB, and two viable options at back-up.
-We have two new starters in the OL, one an upgrade but a rookie (Loadholt) and one unproven (Sullivan). Expect this to still be an area of issue at times, but probably moving in the right direction.
-Special teams appears to be improved on both the coverage and return side of the ball.
-Henderson and Farwell appear fully recovered from their season ending injuries last year.
-Receiving corps looks improved talent wise, but expect lack of experience will be an issue at times. Berrian injury has been a concern in his lack of work with Favre.
-Linebacker position looks better than ever, both in performance and depth.
-Secondary improving so long as new starter Johnson, newcomer Allen and others can learn their trade quickly.
-D-Line, running back, kicking and tight end positons strong and deep.
-Still under the game management of Chli and Co., Favre may help with that facet of the game.
Yup, Vikes look improved on paper over 2008. But now we gotta play the games! Stay healthy boys, and good luck!!
…one more area of concern. Tomb and Bucky placed on the Physically Unable to Blog list. Their return is unknown. They are likely rehabbing on a twitter account somewhere.
I haven’t even seen Tomb on PFT blogs. He must really be hiding.
AV had him taken out
I think I heard Tomb was going to interview for job being a physical therapist for “all” the cheerleader squads across the nation…And Tomb “might” have traveled this weekend to many cheerleader camps to get as much “hands on experience” possible that would be required for the position or “positions” ??…: )
Where are you Tomb ??…
Coach gave a great evaluation of the Vikings roster and improvements in that area !!..
Tomb ~ Where is that cheerleader report ???
Go Vikes !!!
Physically Unable to Blog list. I like that. The “PUB”. Should have a Practice Squad too for some of you guys. The spellling on here is atroshus.
