Vikings announce cuts

September 1st, 2009 – 2:58 PM by Judd Zulgad

Kicker Taylor Mehlhaff, cornerback Derrick Roberson, running back Antone Smith and guard Nick Urban were cut today as the Vikings trimmed their roster to the mandatory (for now) 75 players.

The Vikings released wide receiver Glenn Holt last week and thus were at 79 players entering today instead of 80.

Another round of cuts will come Saturday when rosters must be trimmed to the regular-season limit of 53 players. The Vikings close the preseason on Friday when they play host to Dallas.

Obviously none of today’s cuts can be considered much of a surprise. There was some thought that Mehlhaff might have a chance to make the roster as a kickoff specialist but coach Brad Childress has never indicated he wants to keep two kickers on his roster.

Urban, you might recall, was a feel-good story this spring when he made the Vikings after getting a tryout at the team’s rookie minicamp. If you don’t recall his story, here it is.

Update: In case you haven’t heard, the Detroit Lions have signed former Vikings quarterback Brooks Bollinger. Here’s the latest on the quarterback situation in Detroit.

What does it all mean Basil?

Thanks Judd!

Was Nick Urban a Guard or a Tackle? Do you think Ian Johnson will still have a shot to make the roster? If not, what are the odds he makes it through the waiver wire?

All those guys were top of the line players 5 minutes ago, right Homers? Remember how excited you were when we signed Glenn Holt?

Favre is getting some hate from Yahoo sports over his block. I didn’t see it, was it as bad as they make it out to be?

Can’t have a 39 year old QB blocking, especially in the preseason…

He hit him in the thighs, not the knees. Its being blown way out of proportion. It was illegal, OK. Throw the flag, assess the fine, and let’s move on.

So, when can Loadholt try out for McKinnie’s job?

What an overpaid POS. I have to dust off a really old joke:

What do McKinnie and Jimmy Swaggart have in common? They both can get 65,000 people to jump on their feet and scream “Jesus Christ!”

Right on, Coach…if he avoided contact, everyone would have said “Oh, Brett’s just not the same, he would have never avoided contact in his hayday!! It’s just not the same Brett..”….like AP said, He was just playin’ ball…that’s all Brett’s ever done is play ball…I just enjoy the competitiveness and the look of him in the huddle, encouraging players after a bad play, and celebrating with them on successful plays…it’s nice having at the healm.

what it means basil is, that if the vikes stay on track and favre doesn`t crack his back, they just might make it deep into the playoffs.

starrc10 says:

Its preseason! We all need to get ahold of ourselves. We could come out flat on our back at the beginning of this season. Lets not forget the 4-0 preseason of the Lions last year.

Shiancoe is looking really good, AP is looking good, Harvin is looking pretty good (what was up with that corner of the endzone pass he missed?). These are the kind of conversations preseason warrants. Get a look at a player or two, don’t get excited that we will be good when the season starts.

lions = no talent
vikes = lots of talent
whats the difference in the last year lions and this year vikes.

starrc10 says:

September 1st, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Great question. I didnt watch any of the preseason from last year.

williams wall says:

September 1st, 2009 at 3:57 pm

if vikes come out flat in our 1st four games they don`t deserve to go to playoffs. i just can`t see that happening with the talent that this team has. starrc10 don`t be such a debbie downer. fans are finally happy about our team, let them gloat a little. it`s good for moral.

Heaven forbid anyone be optimistic in the preseason! We wouldn’t want to look forward to the start of the season when we can just think about the negative aspects. Yes, the Vikings have had way too many penalties. So, I guess if they don’t cut those down they’ll only win games by 7 points instead of the 17 they should win by.

The Vikings probably won’t win every game this year. And, once the playoffs start, who really knows what will happen? But, this team is damn good and is going to kick a lot of a$$ this year. And, I wouldn’t want to think any other way because I guarantee you I am having more fun, more excitement, and enjoying myself more right now than most of you. Sometimes Coach, wearing rose colored glasses and drinking the kool aid can be a lot of fun, especially when the Vikings are winning.

williams wall says:

September 1st, 2009 at 4:00 pm

the difference is that the vikes actually have talent on there team and detroit had none. the comment was framed like a jeoperdy question.

williams wall says:

September 1st, 2009 at 4:04 pm

i like the kool aid it makes me happy. when the vikes win and i drink the purple kool aid, i really have a LOT of fun. kool aid cures what ails ya.

BTW, I want to say Chip/Judd are doing a fantastic job with these updates and with the updates during the game. You boys are going above and beyond. I live out of state now and these updates are all I get so I really appreciate it.

Gun, maybe it’s just that we don’t have those pesky skeeters out here on the Left Coast that makes us optimistic.

I definitely don’t miss those little bastards.

starrc10 says:

We do agree the Vikings are absolutely loaded this year. We have a probowl or probowl caliber (aka probowler if playing for Dallas or NY Giants) in almost every position group on the field.

WR-Berrian or Harvin
OL-Hutch for sure
TE-Visanthe and Kleinsasser
QB-Hillbilly Old Man ;)
HB-Goes without saying

DL-JaredAllenKevinWilliamsPatWilliams
LB-EJ Henderson could make it even in our small market
CB-Mighty Mouse
Safety-Theres potential there (see Madieu covering Johnson on the Redzone pick?)

teacher in a greenbay classroom asks kids which ones are packer fans. everyone raises hands but one boy. after class teacher makes boy stay and asks why he`s not a pack fan. boy says mom and dad are vike fans so i`m vike fan. teacher says if mom and dad are morrons does that make you a morron? boy answers NO that makes me a packer fan!!!

GunslingerCA says:

Difference between Packer fans and Vikings fans?

Packers only goal is to beat the Vikings twice this year. I’m content for the Vikings to go 14-2 and lose to the Packers twice this year.

It’s all about the big picture.

starrc10 says:

Its like IA-State Vs the University of IA. IA State has an inferiority complex. Haha Packers fans are beginning to accept their inferiorityness!

I have never been to a Packer newspaper or blog. Yet, I see those insecure SOB’s on here all the time. Why? They are afraid. They are trying to talk themselves into believing their team is better. What they don’t realize is it is not Aaron Rodgers v. Brett Favre. It is the Packers v. the Vikings. And the Vikings TEAM is still better. End of story.

Tomb... says:

Eesh, I’d love to go 14-2, but the thought of those Pukers sweeping us admittedly makes me a little nauseated.

Tomb’s blogging anti-block software up and running well, I see. Swears like a sailor and it all sails through without a hitch. Jeez!

Gun, I don’t mind people who hoot and holler and wear those glasses and all that stuff. Enjoy the Vikes any way you want, I say. Go ahead and go crazy after beating the Texans 17-10 - its your right. Just don’t ask me to, OK? I like to analyze what’s going on out there. Comes with coaching I guess.

Me, I wanna see us use all this talent to actually accomplish something. Haven’t seen enough yet to put us in the Super Bowl. But, hey, that’s why we play the games, so bring it on!!

Tomb, you cranky cuz you couldn’t flip over and catch the Twins game during Viking game commercials last night? My remote was actually getting warm by the end of the night. Sweet!

Tough time of the season, here. Lots of dreams getting dashed as these guys get the news. They always believe they can be the one to beat the odds. And once in a while one does.

I love you Brett! I love you Vikings! (I don’t like you very much, BMac.)

You should be drawn in a pool of cheese for even suggesting a sweep by the Pack.

Judd,
Great news on Brooks Bollinger.
I imagine the Lions management will be keeping him very busy cleaning the latrines and the feminine disposal bags at Ford Field. Happy to hear he has been signed by the Lions.
