Favre shows off arm strength

August 19th, 2009 – 5:32 PM by Chip Scoggins

Brett Favre threw more passes in Wednesday’s practice than he did in his first practice and he certainly had plenty of zip on the ball.

Favre had surgery to repair a torn biceps tendon in May and revealed Tuesday that he has a tear in his rotator cuff. But Favre’s teammates said he still has plenty of velocity on his throws.

“The dude’s throwing missiles out there,” defensive end Jared Allen said.

“It’s hot, it’s hot,” wide receiver Bobby Wade said.

“Every ball is a fastball,” tight end Visanthe Shiancoe said. “I’m not sure if it’s his ‘fast’ ball yet. I’m scared to see his ‘fast’ ball, but it seems like they’re on a string.”

Favre’s former position coach Steve Mariucci watched practice and had this to say about Favre’s arm: “He was throwing it pretty good. He was shootin’ it around. I think the issue is, what will he feel like tomorrow? He threw more today and he threw harder today than he did yesterday. So he’s just going to wait and see, is my arm feeling a little bit sore, is it fatigued? And it shouldn’t.”

I guess Common’s statement that Rosenfels has a stronger arm than Favre can be nominated for “preposterous statement of the year”. Or he could have been joking. You can’t always tell with that guy.

Are we going to add Steve Mariucci to the coaching staff? That would be a very good thing, imo.

I do have to admit he has put together an “awesome” team…To where he was only a QB short of a very special team !!

Getting Favre should be the final piece to the puzzle ??

But Tomb ~ lets not put Chili on the “mad genius pedestal” quite yet !!!

hahaha…But if a super bowl looms in the future for the Vikes…I might just help build that pedestal !!….

a small one anyway….: )

The arm may be strong but what about his “head”? I used to look forward to Favre/GB playing the Vikes simply because we could depend on some timely interceptions to help us along. I’m skeptical that anything has changed but we shall see…I certainly hope so!

AZ Vike says:

Tomb... says:

August 19th, 2009 at 6:29 pm

I’m not too worried about the INT’s.

This is still, first and foremost, a running team. They wanna stack the box, unleash the Favre.

Other than that, AD gets his 2k yards.

kennyrogers says:

August 19th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

Right, Tomb, Vikes are a power running team. Adrian is the only reason Brett is here. Extremely glad to hear Jared Allen’s ankle is only a mild sprain.

You know he jumped off the Empire State Building this one time and he only sprained his ankle.

Jared Allen lost both his legs in a car accident once….and still managed to walk it off.

If you were killed by Jared Allen, your tombstone would read RIP, ripped into pieces.

Does Brent Farve have another dad that could die before the Green Bay game?

homeskillet says:

August 19th, 2009 at 6:50 pm

Steve Mary-oochy just said Favre ran the offense today like he’s been doing it for years. He said it’s not just that its the same system Favre had for 16 years it’s also because he’s been studying the playbook for months.

ebster2112 says:

Good link. Thanks Starrc10, who I believe correctly predicted the circus was coming to town before the Eagle had landed and Brett was whisked away in the white Bronco in a low speed police escort. I think he predicted it early in the week, so he is maybe one of those psychotics who has ESPN.

But Siefert said, “I’d take Cutler over Favre as my quarterback”. Is that so Kevin? Well, Urlacher said Aaron Cutler is a pu$$y, so that’s what I’m going by.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

August 19th, 2009 at 7:37 pm

So is Brent going to have a locker with the rest of the guys? Or will Brent put on his Wranglers in office next to Childo in his own locker room?

Welcome to locker room splitsville!

This won’t be an issue if they win, but if they don’t, this will become an issue, just like in Greenbay and NY.

Fred thinks they should put Brent’s locker between Shanko and Pat Williams.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

August 19th, 2009 at 7:47 pm

Come on now Bleeds, “dream team” ?, The Vikes have two offensive linemen starting this year who have never taken a snap in a regular season game. We have a QB is older than time. Our special teams group was 98th in the league last year, our 1st round draft pick has a major taste for the puff…Let’s just hope the first time a defensive lineman runs by Loadholt, and it will happen with some frequency, that Banjo Brent doesn’t get killed. The old guy can’t move anymore. He’ll look like Barach Obamas staring at one of his telepromters while a lineman gets ready to mow him down.

After Brett Favre joins a rival team, his comment aimed at Packers fans really ticks them off. “If you’re a true Packer fan, you understand.”

Video from yesterday’s practice showed Bobby Williams, Nick Moore and Vinny Peretta all dropping Favre passes. Fortunately it also showed Percy having no trouble reeling them in and today’s footage had nice receptions by Wade and Rice.

Good article
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/trainingcamp09/columns/story?columnist=wickersham_seth&id=4409714

Favre–and I think Chili–played this out about as well as one could expect under the circumstances. I suspect the “no” answer three weeks ago was staged to allow for him to miss camp without a big ruckus. And because he and Chili kept their mouths shut, they have plausible deniability that minimizes the damage the preferential treatment might otherwise have created.

B. Grant says:

August 19th, 2009 at 10:20 pm

My goodness people, let’s get a grip here. Maybe we should just get rid of Klewe, as it does not appear we will ever punt. We could have two guys to kick off because there will be too many for one kicker to handle in one game.

Did I miss something? Isn’t Chili still the head coach and Bevell the OC? We still have two rookies in the OL right? Berrian is hobbled AGAIN, right? This is a 40 yr. old QB with shoulder issues who holds the all time INT record, right?

I love optimism, but mixed with a little reality as well.

c.carterhof says:

August 19th, 2009 at 10:35 pm

People are excited Coach, its crazy. I’ll admit its getting hard not to think our Vikes are going to be really good.

c.carterhof says:

Did I miss somthing about Sasser. Judd said he was wearing a cast on his hand/wrist. What is that all about?

B. Grant says:

August 19th, 2009 at 10:41 pm

Yeah, c., I think most of it just shows how low the QB position had sunk here. And yet perhaps not as low as we think. Tark is Tark, and yes, a little abrasive, but he is right in that a QB alone is not going to take us from a weak first round loser to a Super Bowl champ. This is a team game and there are several areas of concern here.

Remember, there were a lot of Packer fans that had gotten tired of Favre and his play. The Jets had him one year and said “no thanks”. This is a LONG ways from a sure thing.

But I agree that an experienced QB in front of AP could look mighty good. We’ ll see.

I’m truly worried about some people here (CAL!). I’m seeing people actually starting to act like Packer fans. NOT a good thing.

By the way, I suggest we keep all our QB’s for now. What if Favre’s 10-year-old daughter tells him she wants him to come home and stay. Boom - he goes home.

I figure we just spent $800,000 per interception.

c.carterhof says:

CalVkg says:

August 19th, 2009 at 11:23 pm

i don’t take it too seriously, bud, but thanks anyway, ya gotta have fun with it

there is too much hype right now, but this is prolly about as well-rounded as a team gets nowadays in the nfl and it won’t last forever

this is a coup for us because it didn’t cost us ANY draft picks or players, so if it fails, it’s just money, and the potential upside is huge.

one guy usually doesn’t make that much difference, unless it’s the QB and the other guys will really play for him.
football is such a sociological experiment, this COULD make all the difference, and these guys are impressed
