Rosenfels, Jackson react to Favre signing

August 18th, 2009 – 4:29 PM by Judd Zulgad

How different were things at the Vikings’ first practice with Brett Favre today at Winter Park? Well, consider that in addition to all of the media members who showed up, I saw two Eden Prairie police officers and a media consultant the team employs was going around the field afterward monitoring interviews and trying to help players give the correct answers. Safe to say this is no ordinary day.

As we await the 5 p.m. Favre news conference, here is reaction from both Sage Rosenfels and Tarvaris Jackson. So much for that quarterback battle.

Sage Rosenfels

Q. What were your feelings when you found out?

A. ”It’s something that wasn’t a total shock. Obviously this has been three months in the ongoing sort of thing. So for me personally this wasn’t what I was hoping for. I tried to get traded here and got traded here. But in my nine years this is the best football team I’ve ever been on. We have so much talent. If the team needs this year, when the team needs me this year, I’m going to be ready. I’m going to play playoff caliber football for this team if the team needs me. I’m going to keep working as if I was the anointed starter. So from that perspective my work ethic, my attitude is not going to change.”

Q. How tough was it to think this was done and now three weeks later that isn’t the case?

A. “It seemed like it [was over]. But obviously that wasn’t the case. So it obviously didn’t work out that way. But I was excited to get out there the other night and thought I played pretty well. I thought that I really have a good grasp for this offense, it’s sort of come naturally to me obviously the last few weeks. I think you guys have noticed that and so I’m just going to keep working. Keep working, stay ready, stay focused and be ready when this team needs me. Because there are so many good guys on this team, good players on this team that for some reason if the team needs me and I wasn’t ready it would be a disservice to all those guys and to myself. So, I’m going to get ready to play, as I said, playoff caliber football for this team if the team needs me.”

Q. Are you going to stay here or try to get out?

A. “I don’t know. I haven’t really thought about that. I’m just trying to get my ankle fixed right now. It’s feeling pretty good for the most part but just trying to get that right. I haven’t even really thought about that stuff.”

Tarvaris Jackson

Q. What was your reaction?

A. “I really don’t have a reaction. I’m just taking it day by day right now. I just came out here trying to get ready for the game Friday.”

Q. Were your blindsided by this?

A. ”We knew all along that this was a possibility. You can’t always believe what you hear especially on TV. There’s really not too much to say about it right now. Right now I’m just trying to get ready for this preseason game.

Q. There was a previous report that if Favre came here you would want out?

A. “I heard about that. I never said that. I never said anything like that at all.”

What about Jared Allen? Was he on the field? Did he practice? Was he limping? Was he in a wheelchair? Did he call Favre a pansy?

keep Sage, release TJ, start Sage next season or when Farve’s arm fall off this season…

It doesn’t seem like Childress was honest with Tavaris and Sage about what was going on. Although it seems like some of the players knew, given Glazer’s sources. So, some players knew and some did not know? Or perhaps some just suspected and since they were anonymous just went out on a limb saying they thought it was already in the books. Hopefully the San Andreas fault doesn’t apprear in the locker room.

These two clowns knew all along that Favre was coming, don’t be fooled for a second thinking that they DIDN’T… Tarvaris has never been painted with the “accurate passer” brush, but his performance last week tells me that he isn’t preparing to play and he doesn’t care about how he plays at this point because he knew he had know chance of starting this year.

How about some speculation as to what we’re going to do with 4 QB’s? Who is the odd man out? If it’s Jackson, then I will reluctantly go along with getting “The QB”. Otherwise, forget it.

The only people this will make happy are the average fan who likes to see a lot of excitement, and ups and downs. Personally, I want consistency and wins. I’ll root for the Vikings non-stop no matter what, because I’ll be a fan long after “The QB” has really retired. However, I’m not looking forward to those 20 INT’s I’m about to witness this season. Berrian, Rice, and Percy better start working on their jump ball routines, because “The QB” will put them up for grabs.

So, let the roller coaster ride begin…

Good point, Bucky, he does seem to lack inspiration. Do you think this points to him feeling secure that he will not be cut but automatically moved to a back-up role?

As far as the odd man out, Childress is waiting to see how Andy Reid is going to use Michael Vick and then copy him with Tavaris if it looks good. If it doesn’t look good he will keep Sage.

Any word on Jared Allen’s ankle? Is Farve beans going to play in the KC preseason game? Does EJ feel like the rust is knocked off yet? How did Robison look filling in for Jared?

I have news for you, just because Jackson looked like crap again doesn’t mean he wasn’t trying. Maybe he’s just stupid. The world needs ditch diggers too you know. Jackson is in the last year of his contract. I’m going to assume he’s doing the best he can to try and get a contract from a team next year. But, once again, trying and doing are two different things. Sage may be angry, but at least he is able to articulate that anger and show some intelligence. Jackson is barely able to put together complete sentences, and certainly not multiple complete sentences on the same topic.

I feel real sorry for Rosenfels.
It looked like the guy was finally going to get to start for a playoff-caliber team and then the carpet gets pulled out from under him.

One good thing for us fans, is that Rosenfels will be about the best backup QB we could ask for.

Now Jackson, I don’t know what to think about him. He seems pretty apathetic to me for a guy that wants to be an NFL QB.

Bones says:

Don’t feel too sorry for Sage Rosenfels. He will cash $3 million worth of paychecks this year to learn from one of the game’s all time greats.

“I’m going to play playoff caliber football for this team if the team needs me.”

PLAYOFF CALIBER. Right on, he sees this team getting to the playoffs and maybe beyond, and I think he wants to be a part of that, and Favre MAYBE will finally miss a game, you never know.

I LIKE Sage as Favre’s backup. Do NOT let him go anywhere.

“Chili, let’s do something to get some publicity!”
“Good idea, Andy! If you sign Michael Vick, I’ll sign Brett Favre!”
“But Chili, Brett doesn’t want to play for you, he just wants to go on one of your boat trips.”
“Well, Andy, Vick doesn’t want to play either, he just wants to get with Bob Barker and do his part to control the pet population.”

Ya gotta love Sage’s take on the whole situation, from Favre, to OTA’s and his performances thus far. Kuddos to this guy. We need Sage as #2 he can back up, and produce efficiently if called upon. Yeah, maybe this was planned all along. But most of us agree, that Favre gives us the best chance to succeed. If he fails, then we go to Sage. I think the kicker to this whole thing has been TJack. He struggled in OTAs, he struggled in Indy. Not a comforting situation from your ‘4th’ year rookie. I seriousously believe that
TJack played a major role in bringing Favre to Minnesota. Much to his demise. We should care 3 QBs. Brett, Sage, and Booty.Booty can learn from the old man, without Favre fearing his job is in jeopordy. In return, the Vikes will give Favre a legit shot at that one last title.

kennyrogers says:

August 18th, 2009 at 6:30 pm

Good idea, Fars.

I wasn’t making fun of T-Jack when I typed “elibibility “, because it’s not nice to make fun of NFL quarterbacks. I just mis-spelled it.

Now I will cheer for Sagebrett Rosenfavre.

homeskillet says:

August 18th, 2009 at 6:31 pm

If you were a reporter at Chili’s presser wouldn’t you ask him about Jarred’s injury? Unless you already knew the answer. I bet the local reporters have an agreement with Chili about not revealing certain information. That’s why Judd won’t answer us by saying “I don’t know”, he doesn’t want to lie to us.

SuperToe says:

August 18th, 2009 at 6:35 pm

Sage has the right mindset: Always be ready. You don’t have to like being a backup, but all it takes is one hit and you’re the starter.

I’d like to see T-Jack traded for a blocking dummy and some chinstraps.

farside says:

August 18th, 2009 at 6:46 pm

elibibility???? that hurts to even try pronouncing it, much less figure out what it means. Will venture and say TJack gets traded/released. Am not delusional to think we are automatically Superbowl bound. but it now does seem much more attainable.

Dear Coach Brads -

Give all your starters one series each per preseason game then sit them until game 1. Nothing good can come of pre season. Let the scrubs play.

Sit Jared, Pat and Kevin.

Give Ryan Cook plenty of reps at left tackle while Banjo Brent is at QB.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

Freds will be putting the whammy on Brent. Fred will be taking Banjo with his first pick in the AV Fantasy Football League.

That should fix him!

farside says:

August 18th, 2009 at 7:50 pm

Cook at Left Tackle? Now Freds my man, dont make me wanna put you out of my misery. LOL. One sports writer did make an interesting observation in regards to TJack. Trade him soon so he dont suffer, and a team like possibly Carolina may be the jumpstart that he needs.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

August 18th, 2009 at 7:52 pm

Freds just wished the Vikes would have given TJack a chance at winning the starting job. This guy was getting it, things were starting to click. It’s a shame, you mark Freds words, if they trade this guy, he will be a pro bowler in 2 years.

If only given a real chance to develop.

Interesting all the Trade Turdvirus talk. I would imagine we coould trade him to the Panthers for a carton of fresh Marlboro cigarettes and a pack of baseball cards. You know…….the kind with the stick of bubble gum inside.
