The battle for the Vikings’ starting quarterback job between Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels won’t really heat up until the team plays its first preseason game on Friday in Indianapolis. And it’s expected the competition will take a few more weeks to play out following that game.
But that being said, wide receiver Bobby Wade had an interesting response Saturday when asked about the timing he was developing with Jackson.
Said Wade: “Obviously, [Jackson] missed a couple of days so that always plays a toll…. You know the timing’s really important for every single one of our receivers, the timing with Tarvaris, and Sage for that matter but especially Tarvaris knowing he’ll be pretty much the named starter going into the season so timing is everything in this offense.”
It’s the last part of that quote that is interesting. “Especially Tarvaris knowing he’ll be pretty much named the starter going into the season …” Does Wade know something we don’t? (It certainly wouldn’t be the first time that happened.)
As far as we know, this is an ongoing competition, so perhaps Wade was just making a prediction, given that Jackson ended last season as the Vikings’ starter. It shouldn’t surprise anyone if Jackson does win the job, but the way Wade phrased his response it appears Jackson might have more of a leg up in this competition than we thought.
If Jackson is going to be our starter we are screwed. We got so many good players this year and all we have for QB’s are two worthless backups who could never start for any other team in the league. I hope there is a Favre in our plans but I am probably just a big dreamer about him ever coming to play for us. Oh yea, first!
After 2 unsuccessful attempts to enter a glorified defense of Sage over TJack, I will try to sneak this entry in: Go Sage!
‘S ok Petey, we have all shared that dream this past summer.
Judd - There is no competition. Jackson is Chili’s guy… period.
Chili doesn’t give a rip how well Spielman’s guy does, because T-Jack is Chili’s (poor man’s) McNabb.
Oh, staying with Jackson will also cost Chili his job.
Hey Judd
Maybe its time for you to avoid becoming roadkill on the information super-highway and start giving us some relevant news
for instance - per Viking J - “How’s Sullivan doing?”
how about, (other than QB) which roster spots are up for grabs?
connect with your base dude, not everyone is a nittwit
I don’t think wade is wrong. And it’s just depressing as hell.
Here is a hypothetical thought. What if Jackson really is better than Sage? That would make Childress a better judge of talent than us. Course, the flipside to that is that Childress really is clueless in his decissions on drafting TJack, and trading for Sage to begin with. But then haven’t we been thinking that all along?
I am new to this site. So I will apologize up front if this entry gets posted several times since I’m a rookie poster; however, I do think my name kind of speaks for itself regarding Brad Childress’ so called “QB Competition.”
Since when is Bobby Wade relevant? For a guy with no talent he sure knows how to shoot his mouth off.
Right on Fred Cox. From now on I want all player comments to be approved and filtered through either Jared Allen or All Day AP. They will be able to weed out all stupidity, ambiguity, worthlessness and dumb predictions.
My prediction–TJ gets hurt in the 3rd pre-season game and Favre comes in for the 4th. Nuff said….
Let’s trade TJoke and Bobby wade for an 8 pack of Gatorade. I wonder if there would be any takers?
Wade is just “hoping” T Jack will remain the starter…Its “job security” for him…Sage will stretch the field…T Jack is always gun shy when the game is close and will pull back from the open man downfield and make the “safe” dump off play to the short guy…I wonder “who” that player is most of the time ??…
I don’t think Wade has “any” idea who will be the starting QB ??…But he knows he has better and more stats if its the chicken $hit leading the team…
Wade = number 4 WR and falling !!!
Vikes-R-us ~ Have you noticed since Brett turned down the Vikes just before training camp…That Ted Thompson has come out of his hole..And strutting around like a peacock..Even with the stirring up things about M Vick “not being ruled out” by the Packer organization ??..Like he might be a possible consideration..And I thought the “standing ovation” at the owners meeting for the Packers on how he handled the
“Favre situation” might stir up the old warrior Favre into asking the Vikes to come and play again ??…
It might be all over with Favre..But why doesn’t it “feel” like its over ???
Go Vikes !!!
Brad Childress is fully committed to Tarvaris Jackson. This might have been a quarterback competition, but it wasn’t a fair one. T-Joke would’ve had to falter considerably and Rosenfels had to be outstanding for him to win the job. The former is a near certainity. The latter is possible, but I’m not holding my breath.
A lot of the T-Joke apologists will soon be spewing out lines about “he’s a rookie” and “this is his year”. I would ask them to remember that every year that T-Joke starts and fails is yet another season’s worth of mileage on Adrian Peterson’s body. He had 363 rushing attempts last year. He is 24 years old. Running backs don’t have much of a shelf life after 30. Without a quarterback this kid’s career will not include a Superbowl ring.
With the exception of quarterback, there is enough talent on this team to compete for a championship. How much longer are the Homers willing to settle for mediocrity?
Bones- who are these homers that you speak of? I dont know of any homers that want to settle for mediocrity. We want a team that can compete for a championship! As far as the T-Jack (T-Joke to you) apologists, there are not many left. Who are you talking about? Jackson and Sage are what we have, I dont like it. But I cant change it.
I couldn’t agree more Bones. Another year of mileage on Peterson, another year of our best players prime years disappearing and another year of this team’s window of opportunity closing a little bit more.
This team has had the league’s top rushing D for the last 3 years but they won’t be forever, they probably won’t even be this season.
Jackson might be able to get this team to the playoffs but does anyone really believe he has the confidence or composure to beat a playoff defense?
Why did Chili have to put all his eggs in the Favre basket? Maybe Cutler would have cost too much but what someone like Garcia??
As far as I’m concerned we’re watching a championship caliber team being wasted.
Guys like Pat Williams, Antoine Winfield, and Steve Hutchinson are on the downside of their careers as well.
Just imagine if we had done the right thing and got Brees in ‘06! But no, we were fine with Brad Johnson, Brooks Bollinger, and the ultimate developmental QB T-Joke!
if tjack plays, every team will just send the preasure and he`ll crumble like the cookie cutter qb that he is. tjack can`t read a dfence fast enough to catch my grandma in her tennisball walker let alone an nfl caliber one. if tjack starts our season is doomed. please chilli, for the sake of our fan base start the season with sage so we at least have a shot at winning. tjack hasn`t been able to pove himself in 3 seasons why would you think he is any better now. every time the other team sends the preasure tjack looks like my cat during a thunderstorm (scared and cowering in a corner).
Yes T Joke is as useless as you know what on a bull but its not the kids fault.
Don’t get me wrong, if he was cut today it would be 2 years too late IMO but its Coach Ego’s blind allegance to a QB that in all liklyhood would not have even been drafted if the Vikings did not waste picks to move up to get him.
Chilly’s is going to prove to all us simpletons that he’s some kind of QB guru even at the cost of his job and in the mean time he’s wasted 4 years of a very good football team. IMO the reason Birk left had more to do with the pitiful QB situation and a paired down high school offense than anything else!
S Rosenfells
T Jackson
G Freotte
K Holcomb
D. Henson
B Bollinger
T Thigpen
J Mc Mahon - not that one
J. D. Booty
B Johnson
PEOPLE this is over 3 seasons, 10 QBs and not a starter in the bunch and whats the root cause??
CHILDRESS
You know Chili and Bevell were probably in touch with Favre from the start of the offseason and you have to wonder if Favre was the reason they didn’t go after a Derek Anderson or Matt Hasselbeck or someone. If that’s what happened, they were idiots.
I agree with Viking Joe. The Vikings have two major shortcomings. First: The lack of an NFL caliber QB (John Madden, when doing a Viking game a couple of years ago, even said that T-Joke “was not NFL ready.” Second: The Head Coach who is a play-calling control freak and the major reason for the first short-coming. He will be gone after this season if he goes with T-Joke as the starter.
What’s really ridiculous is that Chili himself obviously knows that time is running out on this team too, or he wouldn’t have tried to get a QB who would only have played one season anyway. So if Chili knew that this season might be our best chance to get to the Super Bowl, why did he put all his chips on a QB who’s famous for not being able to make up his mind and then changing his mind??
A cold splash of reality: Favre has tuned down the offer to play for the Vikes. D. Anderson [even if we did trade for him] would take at least a year to learn and get comfortable with the Viking system. There is no one else out there available, that is any better than what we have. Depressing? Yup it can be. So we just gotta ride with what we have, and pray for the best.
If they were going to make a play to get Anderson, they needed to do it a month ago. I don’t think he is the answer (still believe his one good year was a fluke), but anything looks like an upgrade over what we have right now. I simply don’t understand Chili’s loyalty to Tarvaris Jackson.
You are probably right Skillet, about Childress pushing the panic button for Favre. I am not sure on this ‘window of opportunity’ being so narrow. The Vikes have a nice mix of veterans and future stars {Sullivan, Loadholt, Birkley, A. Allen, Rice, Harvin, Greenwell, and yes even AD to name just a few}. At least we are not the Redskins of old. Where as the ‘Over the Hill Gang’ collected S.S. at the end of the season.
Bobby Wade must love stirring things up, first he says Urlacher thinks Cutler is a pu$$y then he says he knows Chili is gonna name TJ the starter. Maybe next he’ll say he knows Zygi is gonna name a new HC next season.
Offer Favre “more” money !!
Chili ~ Your not happy with what the QB’s play so far ??…Save your job and have Zygi offer Favre more Guaranteed money…
Its not to late to print up number 4 jerseys !!…
Childress seems to have a “Thing” for TJ, just like Lemaire had a “Thing” for Martin Skoula. Skoula turned over the puck constantly, like TJ turns over the football. But, both coaches think there players are just great. I can’t figure out why tho.
farside as far as future stars, AD is a current star and I love Greenway - I’ll give you Harvin if he stays healthy but can we really say Sullivan, Loadholt, Birkley, A. Allen, and Rice are future stars??
there’s a chance Bobby Wade doesn’t even make this team, and why is Wade so sure that Jackson gets the job when some in the media are thinking that Booty might even beat him out for the #2 job?
Chili’s job is on the line, but I can see his stubbornness and ego making him go with T-Joke and going down in flames with him.
Sometimes man, when there is nothing left, ya just gotta believe! Actually, I do give those names a benefit of a doubt. They are not like Erasimus James, Cook, TJack……you know, the picks that had everyone wondering WTF. These ‘potential’ stars, if not at least quality players, does give us a brighter looking future than the latter ones mentioned. So, yeah, there is an onus to win now, with the current talent we have, but it is not like the cupboard is going to be bare. The last 3 drafts have been good, and that is how you keep a good thing rolling.
Interesting observation Jared. Scenerio: Jamar Johnson really takes that next step, and lands return dutys, Rice nails down no.2 wr slot. Harvin does even half of what he has shown in college, he grabs the slot rec. I can see Wade ending up on the sidelines with Ray Edwards, and in the real world, TJack. Not to mention Wade is rocking the boat a bit lately, which is a big no-no in Childress book
Yeah that’s true. The triangle has been pretty good in drafting and free agency.
I’m really curious to see what Rice does this year. People outside MN have no idea idea how much talent this guy has. I remember his college coach talking about watching film where Rice went up for a pass and his feet were like around the shoulders of the CB.
Really skillet? Rice can elevate almost 6 feet in the air? Maybe go by the name homerskillet……
I’m just saying what his coach said, the DB could have been a dwarf for all I know. The point is Rice has hops and is an athlete.
Possible, Roy. some of those NBA guys can get some serious air. that leaping tallent will come in hand if TJack gets the helm.
[…] We don’t quite know what is behind Bobby Wade’s statement about Tarvaris Jackson "knowing he’ll be pretty much the named starter" when the training camp quarterback competition is all said and done. […]
Mike Holmgren or Bill Cowher in 2010. Chili can go back to fetching Andy Reid something to eat.

A 36-40 vert does not get you to a 5-10 db’s shoulder. But whatever. Rice is alot like TJoke -brittle - so I guess we’ll see.
Bobby Wade is the master of the 5 yd. curl patern… T-Jack’s favorite pass.
pattern
[…] Wade certainly made it seem like that particular vital camp battle was already over. “Obviously, [Jackson] missed a couple of days so that always plays a toll,” Wade said when asked about T-Jack’s situation. “You know the timing’s really important for every single one of our receivers, the timing with Tarvaris, and Sage for that matter but especially Tarvaris knowing he’ll be pretty much the named starter going into the season so timing is everything in this offense.” […]
Sounds like Bobby Wade is the master of running off at the mouth.
Bobby Wades ex-college coach said he say him jump up for a pass and his feet were above the DB’s head.
True story.
Oh yea, the DB was lying on the field.
What gives? 3 of the last 5 blog entries mention Tjoke. The other 2 were about practice. Do Judd & Chip have the same manlove for TJoke that Chilledidiot does? Seems to me there are 79 other players on the roster. What about them? OK make that 78, you did mention Bobby Largemouth Bass Wade. If TJoke is hurt the Viking world rejoyces, enough said, we do not need to hear he’s riding a bike, he’s in a tent, he’s playig catch with the ball boys. Judd/Chip, do YOU READ ANY of the questions presented to you by your readers? If you do, you must not have clearance from Colnel Chilliklink to talk about anything other than a terrible player at the teams weakest positon(Can you say TJoke?). Really fine wrtiting fellas.
Bottom line is, write/blog about OTHER PLAYERS. TJoke is NOT an NFL caliber starting QB. That’s it, injured, healthy, drunk, stoned or just high on life, he SUKZ as a QB. Blog that and I bet you’ll 2-3 more hits than if you keep writing boring who cares info on the Jokester pretending to be an NFL QB.
I’m going to defend the players a bit after all of the bashing that seems to be going on. Wade is probably making an honest assessment of the QB play.
Seriously think about this…Jackson has a total of 524 pass attempts in the 25 games of his career. That total number is similar to what good passing teams attempt in a single season. He has a total of 22 turnovers in his career.
How about Rosenfels? The “vetran” has attempted a total of 562 passes in his 7 year career over a whopping 32 games. He is responsible for 33 turnovers. Additionally, he has to learn a new offense and get acclimated with new players.
So think about it this way…who would you start out of two guys with questionable decision making abilities who essentially have equal games played and similar stats: a guy who has been within the same team and system for over 3 years, or one who has been with the team for just over 3 months? Maybe Wade isn’t such a fool…
How about - ….”2-3 times more”….
g_mystro
I would start BOOTY over T-JOKE, Hell I would find a High School QB better than T-JOKE
Fred Cox might have added Mike Shanahan to that coaching list.
