Jackson has MCL sprain

August 1st, 2009 – 12:39 PM by Judd Zulgad

MANKATO — Vikings quarterback Tarvaris Jackson suffered an MCL sprain in his left knee during today’s practice, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The website ProFootballTalk was the first to report the injury. Jackson has undergone an MRI.

This comes almost a year after Jackson sustained a sprained MCL in his right knee in a preseason game at Baltimore. In that case, Jackson missed the final two preseason games before returning for the regular-season opener.

PFT cites a source in its report and says that “initial word is that it’s only a Grade I sprain, and that Jackson might be day-to-day.” A Grade II sprain, or something worse, would put Jackson out for several weeks. Jackson was injured during an 11-on-11 drill when he tripped over Letroy Guion, who had fallen to the ground.

Jackson stayed down for several minutes and was attended to by head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman. Jackson eventually got up and walked off the field under his own power. The Vikings will hold an evening practice from 7 to 9:15 p.m. today and we should get an update following that session.

The extent of Jackson’s injury will be key because it could have a significant impact on the battle for the starting quarterback job.

Jackson and Sage Rosenfels have been expected to compete for the position and split reps with the first team in the early part of training camp. Rosenfels admitted Friday splitting the snaps wasn’t the ideal situation. “It’s not the premier situation you’d like to have,” Rosenfels said. “You’d like to be throwing with Bobby [Wade] and Bernard [Berrian] and [Visanthe Shiancoe] and all those guys. Every throw. But that’s not what we’re going to do.”

At least that’s not what Rosenfels expected until this morning. Rosenfels will get all the snaps with the first team until Jackson can return to the field and John David Booty becomes the No. 2 quarterback. Although the Vikings have publicly closed the door on having Brett Favre join them, you have to wonder what Favre’s reaction is going to be when he hears about this. If Jackson is going to miss any amount of time the Vikings also are going to have to bring in another quarterback to take some of the reps with the third team.

The Vikings waived quarterback Sean Glennon (Virginia Tech) in June after signing him as a free agent following the draft. The Vikings could look to bring back Glennon — a quick search of the Internet does not show that he has signed elsewhere — or they could look toward a veteran guy for a short-term solution. Quarterbacks on the open market include Cleo Lemon, Craig Nall and former Viking Brooks Bollinger. Lemon reportedly worked out for New England on Friday. Nall has bounced around the league and is familiar with the Vikings system, having played in a similar offense when he was with the Green Bay Packers.

As for Jackson, this injury is just the latest setback he has suffered during the course of his four-year career. Here’s a look at Jackson’s various injuries.

  • Jackson underwent arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee in September 2006 after being injured in practice. The rookie was not a starter at the time.
  • Jackson suffered a strain groin in the Vikings’ loss at Detroit on Sept. 16, 2007 and missed the next two games.
  • Jackson returned on Oct. 14 against Chicago but a week later suffered a fractured right index finger in the second half against the Dallas Cowboys. He missed the next game on Oct. 28, 2007 against Philadelphia.
  • Jackson was able to return the following week against San Diego but suffered a concussion in the second quarter and did not play the next Sunday at Green Bay. He ended up missing four games that season.

TJoke is faking the injury to take the pressure off the front office for not having Harvin signed yet. That triangle, they are clever. I’m sure Letroy will be cut for damaging Chillpowders pet project, TJoke. I’m starting a Letroy Guion Fan Club!

Wow. Is it me or does it feel like the wheels are coming off this train?
T-Jack needs to stay on the field I know, but this sounds like a freak accident . . .

What the heck was Guion doing? The players weren’t even fully suited up. WTF?

TJ has always been injury prone but it won’t take much to hand the job to Sage.

At least we know Sully can throw D Tackles to the ground I guess. Someone should have told the newbie that you throw them AWAY from your QB though…

Crap. Rosenfels better improve on his decision making right now.

As we all know, he knows what to do if he gets in trouble…

Even though everyone is saying its over with Favre, if TJ was out for months I bet Favre would end up here. He’d get to miss some of camp and he could say he didn’t come to stick it to Ted Thompson he only came back because it was an emergency.

BB just said it was all a joke regarding T-Jack statement, going as far as to say he is ‘’fine'’ and don’t believe everything you read in media. A barb at all the Favre talk perhaps?

How about a trade for a guy named Colt Brennan from the Redskins ??…I think that kid has some talent..

Saint Bud Grant said it’s not ability but DURABILITY that really counts in the pros. You don’t win games by sitting in the training room.

Fantastic!

I can’t believe the china doll went down in less than 48 hours.

We should have traded him like he wanted, granted we only would have recieved a 7th round pick.

I also heard Berrian was joking in his Twitter post. His Tweet was a Twick (stolen). Berrian and Wade and Harvin in the news too much lately. Where is Harvin, anyway? Sick? Holding out? Partying? Back to the quarterback position for a second. This is the opportunity that Booty is looking for. He needs to show people he’s better than Sanchez by winning the starting job.

Maybe Favre really will show up now. This is probably God’s cruel little joke to torment the other half of Packer fans that didn’t already lose their minds over Favre coming here the first time.

I think someone baked Chili’s piece of clay too long. Good grief, a friggin fly could bounce into the back of T-Joke’s head and he’d end up with a severe concussion…

norseman66 says:

August 1st, 2009 at 7:10 pm

No big deal. Players get bumps, bruises and sprains in training camp. Welcome to the NFL people. Biggest question is what’s the status on Harvin’s contract situation? Is he close to signing?

Something called Letroy Guion may have just saved the season…

TheGuyWhoWins says:

August 1st, 2009 at 7:18 pm

Letroy Guion- “Some guy wearing a cheese helmet paid me 20 grand to take a dive at T Jack’s knee.”

Favre will QB the Vikes opening weekend. Mark my words. (Or am I just having fool’s hope?)

i cant believe someone else thinks curtis painter will be a good QB

moforoozy says:

August 1st, 2009 at 7:37 pm

painter would have been a second round pick had he not gone back for his senior season. where he struggled, and the vikes foolishly did not draft him but instead think sage is the future.

Jared Allen says:

August 1st, 2009 at 8:14 pm

here you go conspiracy theory fans…

This is all part of Chili and Favre’s master plan. Favre didn’t want to attend training camp. So chili secretly has Guion hurt T-Joke so that Favre can ride in on his green tractor in a week or so to save the team.

Tarvaris Jackson isn’t as dumb as he seems. He knows the only way to prolong his career is to get injured every year, thus getting more time to develop (and make NFL $$).

Like I said the other day. I was at traing camp friday I’m not a coach or professioal sports writer but I did not see anything close to good from any of the qbs. Yet several reporters did. We have all the talent we need to be a contender not a pretender accept a quarterback that can read defenses and throw timing passes down field. I hope favre reconsiders and comes in on his john deer and leads us to the superbowl. Vick for now is a running back not qb

From what the boys were twittering from the sidelines, it looked like Jackson was out performing Rosenfels.
Not good.
For the 4th year in a row, we may go thru yet another season without a QB.
Thanks again Childress for your expertise in QB judgment.

Fran the Man says:

August 1st, 2009 at 10:20 pm

The guy you really have to feel sorry for is Adrian Peterson.

Because of Childress’s ineptness at coaching and player evaluation (QB’s)
AD is going to go thru his 3rd season KNOWING that we do not have the coaching or QB to go very far.
It’s got to just kill the guy.
