The Vikings waived cornerback Charles Gordon today after he failed his physical, according to the Vikings.com website.
Gordon did not take part in any of the Vikings’ offseason practices after he suffered a gruesome injury to his left leg and ankle while attempting to return a punt in a game against the Green Bay Packers last November at the Metrodome. Gordon, who was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Vikings out of Kansas in 2006, had been serving as the team’s primary nickel back last season before the injury.
The Vikings now have 81 players on their roster and can be at 80 for the start of training camp. That means space is going to have to be made for first-round receiver Percy Harvin and second-round offensive tackle Phil Loadholt, who have yet to sign. The Vikings also will need to create room for Brett Favre if he decides to play for the team.
Yikes. What a way to end a carreer with a team.
This is a shame, both for the Vikings and the young man. I assume we could have placed him on the PUTP list if we felt he was eventually going to return to 100%. This decision leaves some questions…
Tomb - your 11:00 am was a little too subtle and academic for me. What are you saying? I just wanted to cover Judd’s back a little yesterday, that’s all. I admit I have a bit of a PP with over-the-line comments. I know anybody can say anything they want, and I usually just ignore it like I said. Some people posting after Twins articles right now are wacko, and it makes them look stupid. I don’t tolerate stupid and wacko very well.
Whatever. I’ll work harder on my ignoring.
If he failed a physical? what does that mean? Like he is healed but got all fat and out of shape? Or is he not healed yet, couldnt pass the physical and was cut?
Good morning Coach!
My post was not intended for you…as a matter of fact, the advice you gave the young man (or woman) was sage advice…and my post was directed that way.
I for one appreciate Judd/Chip and updates on pretty much ANYTHING the fills the gap of NOTHING that is the offseason.
…and Twins: no comment my good sir, just sit back and enjoy the Nat’l pasttime! =>
I feel horrible for this Gordon kid.
Judd, to echo Mr. Matt, are there any further details as to why he “failed” the physical?
…also, did Judd have a 99% vote of Favre confidence, or was it 99.9% or even 99.99%?
so we need two more roster spots. Who else is gonna get the axe?
Well, as self-serving as this comment is, I have to say it: we won’t likely have to worry about Plaxico landing with Cutler and the Bears anytime soon.
“Negotiations in the gun possession case against ex-Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress — who accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Midtown nightclub last November — fell apart earlier this year after prosecutors insisted he do two years’ state time on a plea to a lesser gun charge, the DA told The Post.
The Super Bowl XLII star was willing to bite the bullet and do jail time, but he wouldn’t agree to more than a year, the DA said.”
Plax is gonna cool his heels in the pen for awhile, I’d venture to guess.
It’s stories like these that make you appreciate the players side in trying to rework contracts for more money. This guy probably never made more than 300k a year and may be done forever.
The Gordon incident was the worst sports injury I have ever viewed in real time.
Wow. I was rooting for Gordon. Kinda surprised by this. The NFL is a business. Always.
My sources inform me that when our beloved Vikings sign Bart Favre that Tarvaris Jackson will be placed on the physically and mentally unable to perform list. Effectively ending his time as a Vikings QB
Coach ~ I can’t say much of anything negative about our Twins…But I do feel the Twins need help at second base if they are going to win the division this year..What are your thoughts there ??…
Sure would like to see some power come in from outside on that 2nd base position myself…
Bad news for Gordon…: (
Sorry to hear that for him…
was pretty bad all right. don’t know which was worse, Gordon’s or watching the original LT snap Theismann’s leg like a twig. that was pretty nasty too.
Theismann was worse because they kept replaying it OVER AND OVER AND OVER.
It was macabre. I’m glad they quit doing that.
Then again, ask Joe Buck and the most disgusting thing ever on televised NFL was Randy Moss mooning Lamblow.
Joe Buck just needs to get a boyfriend and maybe he’ll settle down a little.
Tomb,
I’m still sticking with 90 or 95 percent that he plays. I will be shocked if it doesn’t happen. Keep in mind, though, this was just my guess and I have certainly been wrong before. It couldn’t come as a surprise that Gordon failed his physical. He was still limping in the offseason practices and that was when he was just walking along the sideline.
Coach is going to be a happy man !!..
Judd is dropping his prediction 5 to 10 percent today !!!….
I’m going Texas hold’em style !!!
I’M ALL IN !!!!…Favre is coming !!!
: )
Thanks Judd. You’re down about 9%, some wavering going on here…
What do you think then, will Gordon ever get back on the field some day? Or is this the proverbial “end of the line”?
Interesting…Judd’s hedging his bets by a handful of percentage points, but bleed pounces and goes all in…
Let’s watch the action play out.
I get the nagging feeling that Gordon won’t be the only sad story played out to a less than auspicious ending. I’m guessing Udeze will be cut…I hope not, but after all is said and done, it is a business.
To reuse a word I saw from earlier–football can, at times, be quite Machiavellian.
Judd ~ I heard players will start reporting to winter park on Wednesday already..When will media personal have access ??…
Worst sports injury of all time was Sabres goalie Clint Malarchuk getting his throat cut open by a skate. If you don’t believe me, simply YouTube his name. Not for the weak of heart…
Good call, bleed…
Yeah, the Twins still need an answer at second base, been an issue for quite some time. I think the Casilla kid just isn’t gonna cut it - he’s sure had his chances. It was his positon to lose, and I think he did it. I can live with Punto/Harris at short, all things considered.
Right Tomb, you’re coming around! I had hot dogs and apple pie this weekend, too. And, did a little time in my Chevrolet!!
Do the stands of a soccer game count as sports injuries?
…if so, those crazy SOB’s take the cake…I wonder how many have died over the years. They make the Black Hole look like Disneyland.
You’re right there, Bones. Once of that was enough for me. Also heard a guy got skewered pole vaulting - pole snapped as he went up. Thankfully that was before youtube. No video needed there.
I’m waiting for Sid to post that it’s 100% certain that Brett will either sign or he won’t sign….
GO VIKES!!!!!
You hear about an occasional javelin going astray, too, but I’m not YouTubing it.
Too bad about Gordon.
Interesting that Favre can parlay his comeback watch into some more endorsements. Maybe Waffle House would be interested. (I apologize if someone already made that joke on the previous thread.)
We only need to cut one! I’ve heard the chant in the background Booty, Booty, Booty…..
I spained my thumb playing backgammon. That was one of the worst sports injuries in the history of sports injuries.
Cut T-Joke.
I feel bad for this kid and the way he went out, but seriously, he was a HORRIBLE returner. I cringed evertime the other team punted until his injury. nuff said.
