There was a report on NFL.com this week that Brett Favre would announce today whether he would end his retirement to play for the Vikings. This bit of information, which came from Favre’s friends and family, seemed to come as a surprise to Vikings coach Brad Childress.
“I’m not aware of any change in [Favre’s] status,” Childress said Monday. “There is no change in status.”
It appears what was true on Monday, remains true on Friday. There has been no change in Favre’s status and he hasn’t made up his mind about whether he is going to return to the NFL. An ESPN report on Thursday described Favre as being “anguished” over his decision. It also noted that Vikings players have been getting in touch with Favre, although certain Vikings already had been communicating with Favre for a few months.
Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols today that, “we can expect to hear something by at least the beginning or middle of next week or perhaps sooner.”
That would indicate that Favre will deliver on his promise of having an answer by next Thursday, a day before the Vikings open training camp practices. Both Favre and Childress have indicated the quarterback needs to be at training camp but the way this is playing out it would be foolish to think there is a drop-dead date on which Favre must make a decision.
Nichols, reporting from Mississippi, said Cook had a long talk with Favre this morning. Cook relayed to Nichols that Favre just doesn’t feel ready yet and that there are some things that he is still considering. Of course, Cook added that anything could change and that Favre could get up from lunch today and decide that he’s ready to make his decision.
Favre, who had surgery to repair the biceps in his throwing arm in May, has been throwing to receivers at a high school in Hattiesburg, Miss., this summer and by all accounts the procedure was a success. Favre’s main issue now is whether he can make it through the grind of a 16-game season.
Nichols did have an interesting tidbit, saying that Favre stayed away from throwing at Oak Grove High this week because of the number of cameras that were showing up. This was after Favre recently told the Associated Press he had increased his workouts at the school to four times a week because “he’s running out of time” to make a decision.
Judd Judd Judd. “4 ever?”
How long have you had that one loaded up? Goofball. =>
Since the Favre deal is an obvious enigma wrapped in a mystery with a hard esoteric shell, can we dabble in the mystery of the Loadholt & Harvin signings? Is there ANY indication they will happen soon?
As a lifelong Viking fan tempted and teased by tenuous triumphs only to be honed by heartbreak and doused in disappointment, my own answer to the MOP is D…the puzzle-completing piece comes and goes all before camp commences.
My answer to the MOP is: True.
Thanks 4 the info, Judd! I’ll check tomorrow 4 more information. “Brett 4 Ever”!
I’ll enter the MOP of the (yester)Day contest also:

Did I win the money?
Tomb,
I’d say Loadholt gets done next week. First-round picks a tricky and not many have signed so this could be interesting.
Maybe the problem is finding a pen large enough to fit into Loadholt’s giant paw.
Thanks 4 the info Judd. I’m 4ever grateful 4 your updates, always something to look 4ward to.
Can we finally stop with the Favre un-stories?? There is only one more possible Favre story before training camp and that’s the story where Favre officially says he’s in or he’s out. Everything else is just fluff.
How about an article on the Harvin/Loadholt negotiations, or something on EJ’s foot or how about something on how Tyrell feels about being the new starting safety.
Where’s coach?
Coach, I’ll not even mention the fact that 96 games later, the Twins are at .500.
48-48
The ol’ breakeven point. Even Stevens.
Shoot me now! Shoot me now!
Kenny - sadly all the “major awards” were already claimed…no leg-lamp for you this time.
I predict The Load plops down on Tuesday.
Favre might become a Viking? How did they keep this a secret for so long?
Well said Slim about Favre. The media creates this crazy mess just so they have another story during the season. Whether Favre comes or not they will have something to talk about. If he doesn’t come and the Vikes don’t do well the media will blame it on the Farve saga, he comes and they lose they also blame it on Favre saga. He comes and they win(use your own defintion here) they talk about Favre being the missing piece to a great team. The only chance this team has to end the madness is to go deep into the playoffs and possibly win a superbowl. The stakes are high this year for this team, and I’m not sure Favre wants to take on this challenge. He’s not going to a team with just playoff expectations, the vikings have to go deep and some believe need to win a superbowl in order for Favre to be considered successful. I’m not sure he’s up to the challenge any longer, and I bet that’s what he’s contemplating. I want him here because it raises expectations but I also am tired of the media writing stories which continually turn out to be false. The media needs to do a better job of sorting through material and reporting things that actually happen and not just speculating. I like how the media always blames it on Favres indecision. If the media reported actual signings and events there wouldn’t be all this crazy BS.
We need a distraction. Something to take away from the mind-numbing Favre news.
Here’s what I like to call Tomb’s Unfavre Related Distraction, or TURD.
Maybe I should work on the acronym… ANYWAYS, assuming NO injuries, how many pro-bowlers for the Vikes this year?
Peterson, Adrian
Hutchinson, Steve
Williams, Kevin
Williams, Pat
Allen, Jared
Henderson, EJ
Greenway, Chad? I’m guessing he could have a pro bowl year, but will get a snub.
Harvin, Percy for ST? Rookie of the year maybe?
Shiancoe, Visanthe maybe gets a look, but won’t make it.
Say, how long was Moses on the mount?
(”The good news is I’ve got him down to ten. Bad news is adultery’s still in”).
Lord Favre has him by weeks and months.
I have this feeling in the pit of my stomach…
I think this is where Ted Thompson, The Packers, and Brett Favre, stick it to the vikings for good and break their backs… With all of the reports of how everyone is calling Brett, or texting, and how everyone is saying players are saying we would like to have him… I have a bad feeling that next week he’s going to give the answer, and it’s going to be a big fat NO… and then we have to go back and kiss sage and tarvaris’s butts, because all along they felt terrible going through this, and now we have to lean on them… This could be a huge detriment to the team here if he doesn’t sign…
I see what you’re saying, but if Favre doesn’t sign, I don’t see it as disastrous. Sage and Tarvaris will both show up hungry, and wanting the starting job. I think the distraction of Favre’s “maybe I will maybe I won’t” will quickly fade away and they will concentrate on winning the starting job.
Hey, Tomb. I see I have made great strides here, as you are now giving daily updates on the Twins. Congratulations on now being a baseball fan.
I now believe that Favre isn’t comin’ folks, and if his heart isn’t in it, then that is the decision that is best for everyone. If its left to Sage and TJ, it will be unfortunate that every mistake they make will be followed by, “if only Favre would’ve come.”

Well that’s certainly the first time in my life I’ve ever been accused of being a baseball fan. Made me feel a little queasy.
If Favre doesn’t sign, it’s certainly not the end of the world. I hope he does, but if not, then you just move on with what you have. If we stay healthy, our team is better than last year’s…and we went 10-6 last year. No reason for a lack of optimism, me-thinks.
What if this is all an elaborate ruse from Brett Favre. Maybe, just maybe he has told Bus Cook to ask the Packers for that “Stay Retired” package after all.
The Only leverage Favre has is to use the Vikings as his only bargaining chip. Would you get surgery (minor) if it meant 20 million dollars and you get to sit on your butt?
Now this might be the most Machiavellian thought I’ve had in awhile - I’m not big on conspiracies. But if you were Ted Thompson, wouldn’t this both screw the Vikings and re-unite the fan base?
Worse yet, what if it isn’t Favre, but TT who has reached back out with the offer. It makes some sense.
I think a lot more is going on here than meets the eye.
Just a thought.
needing to go to the SB to be a success is BS……32 teams and only God knows who will win it all…..just a bunch of stories……BF will sign….just a roster move….nothing more, nothing less…let’s play some football!
GO VIKES!!!!!
are we playing with that panic button just a bit? If he chooses not to sign, it wont be ‘our’ fault, and then we can go back to bashing the Chilly one, for creating this QB mess in the first place. For Sage and TJ, buck up. NFL is a business, It is not even debateable that those two were better than Favre, combined. So if Favre does not sign, we just grab a beer, settle down in the recliners and get ready for some AZZ kicking Jr. Hign 11-man football offense,
You know I was thinking - dadburnit, I lost my thought, danged whiskey.
I honestly think that Percey Hilgenberg will make a great impact in both the return game and on offense. Watching some of his game tapes fron the U of Miami showed me alot.
Where is creepy guy 4Ever at today? I am waiting for an update on what he had for lunch and what his son fed his dog last night. Sooooooooooooo creepy
I call BS on this whole thing. If he backs out now, BS. If this is just a bunch of stories, BS. Make the decision by monday or be gone. We got a good ball team here, get on board or dont. Machiavellian, wow nice word quagmate, never seen that one before.
“….it would be foolish to think there is a drop-dead date on which Favre must make a decision.”
There’s no way Chilly takes Favre after this Thursday. I dismissed NFL.com’s report that he’d make an annoucement by today,it didn’t make sense. So this time I’m guaranteeing a decision will be final by next Thursday.
