Bears, Packers tickets not part of single-game sales

July 16th, 2009 – 5:18 PM by Judd Zulgad

You might have noticed on the previous blog that it won’t be possible to buy tickets to the Chicago or Green Bay games at the Metrodome when Vikings’ single-game tickets go on sale Monday morning.

The reason is because for the time being the Vikings are only going to offer tickets to those games to fans who buy season tickets. This is a change from past years when what often happened was fans who wanted to buy Chicago or Green Bay tickets also had to buy tickets to another less-attractive game. The Packers game at the Dome, for instance, often was coupled with a preseason matchup.

“They are part of the full-season package,” said Steve LaCroix, Vikings vice president of sales and marketing and chief marketing officer. “We will continue to gauge fan interest and get the sales process underway. We continue to renew season-ticket orders. That process has taken longer than in the past years. We are actively working through our renewal transactions and will re-address those two games down the road.”

So what gives?

Well, certainly part of the reason for going in this direction has to be the fact the Vikings are waiting to see if Brett Favre ends his retirement to play in Minnesota. As we found out Wednesday, that could take another two weeks. However, if Favre does return, that Oct. 5 Monday night game against the Packers at the Dome is going to be one of the hottest tickets ever for a Vikings home game. The Nov. 29 game against the Bears also isn’t going to be easy to get into.

Perhaps the Vikings are hoping that because most fans expect Favre to return they will simply decide to buy season tickets now in order to make sure they can attend the two games against Minnesota’s NFC North rivals.

…and maybe the Wilf’s are sick of all the green/gold in the stands at Packer games, and figure this might help keep some of those buzzards out.

Mr. Wilf
I am very sad to hear that you are not selling tickets for the Packer or Bears game because Brett Favre has not signed a deal yet! I have been a season ticket holder for many years! I am now proud to say that I have canceled my tickets! To say you are “getting a feel on fan interest!” give me a break!!! You have not had a very good turn out for season ticket renewal and now you’re saying you’re not ready to sell those tickets! I was just about to renew, but after hearing this, I now know that the team that I use to care so much about is just like the Yankees!! I hope that the games are blacked out, and you make NO TV MONEY!!! I can’t believe that Minnesota’s True team is selling out just like the Yankees! The last I checked the Twins had a better attendance then the evil empire. I am very sad to hear this. I was going to buy seats for the Packer game on Monday, not because of #4, but that was the only time the Metrodome was a fun place to be since the Wilf’s and Chilly took over. But now I guess I am not good enough because I let my season tickets go this year. I was once proud to say that I bleed Purple and Gold, I guess now I am not good enough to do that! I feel that I am no longer any part of this team, nor do I think that I want to be. It makes me sad to say these things. I hope that after this little run, you need people like me who have been ticket holders though the “rebuilding” years again, and like myself I hope others will tell you to find the snoody people that you are looking for now! This team was built with regular people and fans, not the ones that think it is a fad! Ask Glenn Taylor about that! The last time I looked, the Target Center has been pretty empty, good thing they don’t need sellouts in the NBA. Please don’t say all fans want what it best for the team, because after I read this article (Judd’s) I almost want to say I Don’t care anymore! Move the team to LA that is where people just go to games to be on TV! As for my loyalty, I think I better stick with the gophers, at least they can’t leave when people are sick of them!

Well, darn my socks! Ain’t that too bad that Zygi wants to earn a few shillings ’cause the folks up there have so many other things for entertainment that football ain’t the draw like in Philly or Pittsburgh. ( I don’t include GB in the normal run of things. They are sort of odd over there. They don’t know enough to stand up to their imported “management” team in support of H.O.F. QB Favre who brought them REAL football after a 36 year drought.) So, don’t buy your season tickets,pout-face. The Vikings will go LA & The Packers will wind up in Vancouver! Oh, yes, the Packers CAN move. You just wait ’til the boys in the rubber room come to the “shareholders” again for a ’stimulus pkg’ for the 4th time. Watch the fur fly to a buy-out private investor!!!

Morning, Tomb. Could this make you a baseball fan, or at least a Marlins fan? Don’t think the Twins have gone down this road yet.

If it matters to anyone, I have reluctantly upgraded my Vikes record prediction to 10-6.

bsvend21, your reply makes no sense at all! You were going to renew your season seats, but since only season ticket holders are assured of getting Packers/Bears tickets, you aren’t going to get season seats? You really decided not to renew because of perceived greed of ownership? How does this situation differ from recent seasons where you had to buy full price exhibition game tickets for the same seats in order to purchase tickets to the Packers or Bears game?

Let’s face it…especially if Favre signs, any “single game” tickets available to the Packers and Bears games will sell out within one hour. Obviously, season ticket sales have been lagging and/or people are being stingy with their money and wanting only tickets to these primo games, but avoiding other games on the schedule. If this tactic helps the Vikings sell more tickets, either season tickets or “less desirable” single game tickets, it’s a good thing for the Vikings. I’m tired of seeing lukewarm support where several games are in jeopardy of blackouts even when the team is competitive (like last season). There’s no reason that the entire season shouldn’t be sold out before the first preseason game is even played! When I first started as a season ticket holder in 2000, the entire season sold out the day tickets went on sale! Are you telling me that with Adrian Peterson, Percy Harvin, and the defense this team has, that they aren’t worthy of watching in person unless it’s a top flight opponent?

This tactic should also discourage scalpers and speculators from snatching up primo games to turn a quick buck…not that they couldn’t make their money back anyway. I live 700+ miles away and can only afford to go to one or two games a year. I have the cheap upper deck corner nosebleeds, and there has only been one season in nine that the tickets I’ve sold didn’t pay for my entire season ticket package!

bsvend21,
I really am a season ticket holder since 1992 and have no problem with it. You are a bandwagon fan! Payments were due by the end of May, you had already jumped. The Vikings don’t need you fair weather support. Take up fictional writing on Sundays–looks like you have a good start.

alan says:

July 17th, 2009 at 9:18 am

Wilf wants to wait so that he can double the price of the tickets if Favre signs instead of the ticket scalpers making all the money.

Tomb... says:

Good morning purple faithful! (which apparently doesn’t include bsvend21).

Coach, that’s what I’m talking about! Nice link…why don’t the Twins do something like that? When you think about it, lovely young ladies sporting low cut jersies, with “TWINS” emblazened across their bosoms is both and endorsement of the team, and an apropos description of what they are packing.

I’m just sayin’

Thanks Hagar, sometimes I get some wood on the ball (there you go coach, baseball metaphor).

Here’s a question I’m curious about, what are your thoughts?:

Who scores the most TD’s for the Vikes this year?

B. Grant says:

July 17th, 2009 at 10:54 am

Yup, I’m definitely making progress with you, Tomb. However, you may have identifed exactly why the Twins do NOT have cheerleaders. That shirt design could appear tacky, to say the least. Not the reason we bring little leaguers to the ballpark, if you know what I mean.

And you’re making progress with me, as noted by my upgraded Viking season prediction.

Tomb... says:

Yeah I guess you’re right, wouldn’t exactly portray class.

Nice to see you begrudgingly upping your season prediction…welcome aboard!

I did not buy season tickets this year because I am sick of buying tickets for the pre season games. The Vikings have been hounding me with re newing and I tell you what. I’ll buy single game tickets when I am ready. Wouldn’t it be funny if Favre says, Ha I was Joking, on July 30. If you want tickets, you can get them. Just be patient.
