More confirmation Favre will be a Viking

July 15th, 2009 – 1:25 PM by Judd Zulgad

Brett Favre told the Associated Press today that he will give the Vikings an answer on whether he will play this season by the time the team opens training camp at the end of this month.

We’ve long expected that the answer is going to be ”I’m good to go.” Asked last week about whether Favre would be a member of the Vikings, I put it at 90 percent. After reading Favre’s quotes today, I’ve increased those odds to 99.9 percent.

Read between the lines of what Favre had to say — plus, the report of his performance from Chris Talbott of the AP — and it’s clear Favre’s second retirement is going to end like his first. Yes, Favre puts up a few caution flags in some of his comments but do you think Talbott would have described Favre as being “jovial” if the quarterback was having an abnormal amount of pain in his surgically repaired throwing arm?

Also, consider that Favre gave a lengthy interview after working out at Oak Grove High School in Hattiesburg, Miss. A dejected Favre would have been unlikely to stop and chat for an extended period. He also likely wouldn’t have added a Sunday workout to his schedule this week.

“There’s two weeks left and I’m doing everything I can,” Favre said. “I was down here Sunday morning working out. I’m trying to get everything to where I feel 100 percent when I go in. I can’t go in any less. When you’re 39 years old, it’s hard enough. But it’s getting there.”

Take it from someone who covered Favre for two seasons in Green Bay, these type of comments are typical. It’s the same reason Favre openly talked about retirement for so many years before actually going through with it. (We all know how that ended.) When Favre opens up about having two weeks left, it’s more him convincing himself that he can go through with this.

And he’s just about ready to give it the go-ahead. That’s clear in this comment.

“I don’t think Minnesota would even consider it if I didn’t have it,” Favre said. “Second of all, I wouldn’t even think about it if I didn’t have it. Now, having it here and having it on the field on Sundays is two different things. I know that for a fact. I know what it takes to play on Sunday and I still believe I have that.”

And that belief means that come July 30 (or so) there is going to be a news conference in Mankato officially announcing what has been speculated on for nearly three months. Brett Favre is going to be a Viking in 2009.

This is getting on my nerves. He at the very least had better have a playbook already, and he better know that thing inside and out by the time he gets here.

Then again, how hard is it to know, run left, run right, pass 3 yards short of the marker, then punt?

“I don’t think Minnesota would even consider IT if I didn’t have IT,” Favre said. “Second of all, I wouldn’t even think about IT if I didn’t have IT. Now, having IT here and having IT on the field on Sundays is two different things. I know that for a fact. I know what it takes to play on Sunday and I still believe I have THAT.”

I think this proves that Favre has been spending time with Chili. Now we just need to know what “it” and “that” are.

So my chances of no Favre are down to .1%, according to Judd. Darn!

B. Grant says:

Matt - the Viking playbook is MUCH more detailed than that. I got this information from a source…

Chili to offensive unit: “I want to make this perfectly clear: we could run ANY of the 11 plays in this book on ANY down at ANY position on the field at ANY point in the game. So be alert!”

Dickie62 says:

That is the worst thing I could hear!!
Favra coming to the Vikings.

Judd,
What are the chances that Favre is already studying the Vikings playbook?

The Viking Hagar says:

July 15th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Yeah, it sure sounds definite..I sure would like to know what the incentives will be in his contract. I’m sure it will be heavy with them & being July 30th has always been the deadline, I’m sure a contract has already been written up & agreed to. Just need a signature so he can start camp right away with no contract negotiations to deal with & hold this circus up anymore.

Yeah I don’t know why Talbott described Favre’s work out as “jovial” either. Definitions of jovial on the Web:
gay: full of or showing high-spirited merriment; “when hearts were young and gay”

Jovial is a Swiss manufacturer of watches, with headquarters in Biel, Switzerland.

Language type: S - block-structured

Maybe Favre is speaking Chili’s S-block type language??

That’s all well and good - but have we signed any more drafts picks? Harvin, Loadholt?

Excellent! Can I buy my VIKINGS SUPERBOWL CHAMPIONS T-shirt now???

I hate to bring this up, as we are all using computers, but as fellow Viking fans, I thought you should know:

The “it” factor..And if you got “that”…You got “what” it takes to play in the NFL…

You can try “this, with “that” and the other “thing” if “that” doesn’t work though ??…If “that” makes sense ??

B. Grant says:

July 15th, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Bleed = Chili relative?

Yes Freds, my man, it looks to be happening. The Vikings are soon-to-be members of the UCS (United Circus Assn.). Rent-a-QB continues at Winter Park.

tylerho says:

July 15th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

So, obviously a contract is in place. There is no way the Vikings would let him wait to the day before camp starts and then start negotiations.

I bleed purple says:

Coach ~ The ink won’t even be dry after signing Favre..And this guy will be chanting to draft Tebow next spring !!…

Tebow has “it” too…: )

surfdoctor says:

Gentlemen I almost just had a heart attack. I quickly scanned the headlines on ESPN.com com and it said - Source: Harvick wants out of Childress contract.

My purple goggled subconscience must have took over for a second and I firstly saw it as - Source: Harvin wants out of Childress contact.

Which on the surface would be terrible news to lose a #1 draft pick before he even attends camp.

But really and truthfully after thinking about it again my perceived headline could be viewed as downright disgusting.

kennyrogers says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:00 pm

If Brett really has “it”, he can throw the ball to who?
Whoever it is drops the ball and the guy runs to second. Who picks up the ball and throws it to What? What throws it to I Don’t Know. I Don’t Know throws it back to Tomorrow, Triple play. Another guy gets up and hits a long fly ball to Because. Why? I don’t know! He’s on third and I don’t give a darn!

B. Grant says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:20 pm

Interesting Kenny. I swear I have heard something similar to that somewhere sometime. But I don’t think there are bases or triple plays in football. I know there’s no crying in baseball, I know I heard that.

Tomb - did you watch the All-Star game? C’mon, be honest…

B. Grant says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:24 pm

…Nathan vs. Howard… eighth inning… tying run at 3rd… two outs… 2-2 count… tried to check his swing… “Gotcha with the slider!”

THAT was good stuff! Did you see the looks on the players faces? You didn’t miss it did you Tomb?

Tomb... says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:26 pm

Coach, I tried…but I kept nodding off, so I scooped up my drink and headed out to the backyard to watch the grass grow instead. =>

…you on board the Favre train yet???

kr

splitting time with Sage is completely logical (which is why it won’t happen) but it makes sense to me….better chance for Brett to be healthy for the playoffs and Sage prepares for next year….

GO VIKES!!!!!

kennyrogers says:

Hey, thanks Krug! Does that mean I win the coveted PoD? (post of the day)

I bleed purple says:

You would think Randy would have “secretly” had that bird mounted…How many hunters can claim to have shot down a bird with a 96 mph fast ball ???

I wonder if that is posted in the “Guinness book of records” ??

B. Grant says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

That is sad news indeed, my friend. Mauer drills the game-tying double and Nathan wins the showdown. I guess all my years of playing the sport just helps me appreciate those battles.

Nope - I see the Favre acquisition more as a trainWRECK, Tomb. Sorry.

I have always felt that birds should know enough to look both ways before crossing a baseball diamond.

B. Grant says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Bleed - I don’t think there was much mountable bird remaining after that event. He wasn’t picked up, he was swept up.

kennyrogers says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

you know why the chicken (or pigeon) crossed the field? he heard the ump calling fowls

This Favre thing is so far beyond old and tiring that I don’t think I could see the beginning of it with the Hubble.

Tomb... says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Hey I played little league one year…took first, nowhere to go from there but down, so I “retired” on top of my game…and never pulled a Favre (unretired).

TELL me this, anti-Favre-ite people…assuming Favre does play for the purple, WHAT does he have to do to win you over?

Win the first four games? First ten games? Not throw picks? Just hand off to Peterson…?

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:54 pm

I mean when Johnson hit that bird ~ Just “PUFF” ~ It rolled a few times and was dead still..It never knew what hit him !!…

In can still see that bird laying there with just the tip of its wing sticking up…With the feathers still floating down….

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 3:56 pm

Good one Kenny ~ Right joke at the right time…: )

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:00 pm

Favre wish list from Bleed ??

Knock the Packers around twice…If nothing more than just that..And I’m good with the Favre signing…

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

If a “healthy” Favre leads the Vikes to the play-offs !!…And he gets the whole season to run this team…

I’m with Tomb ~ What team wouldn’t be wondering WTF it would be to face the Vikings in the play-offs ??

Lost Viking says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Is there any possibility of a surprise announcement being tagged to the Favre announcement.

Say that Vikings call press conference for Tuesday, 21 July could they toss in a Jon Runyan, Mark Tauscher and/or Bubba Franks as part of the training camp program?

The announcement becomes veteran stars flocking to Viking to compete for SuperBowl..

B. Grant says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

If Favre doesn’t get us past round one of the playoffs, where was the upgrade? But I wouldn’t lay that all on him, cuz we have questions in the OL and the secondary that are just as important.

The saddest part will be the loss of the team concept. Favre will be the moon among the stars on this team, and that could easily become an issue.

Tomb... says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:14 pm

bleed, yeah baby! Superbowl’s a coming!

Coach, I know you are a BIG line guy, but look at the Steeler’s OL last year…not exactly future HOF’ers from Tackle to Tackle, but they got it done.

…and they did NOT have AD or Harvin in the backfield.

I hear your moon/star analogy, but I would argue this is still AD’s team. His moon, RIGHT NOW, on the field of play, is bigger than Brett’s.

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

Tausher and Runyan could help out Loadholt with time on his learning curve…Good point Lost V…I think Bubba has seen his better days gone by though…

But situational help on the O-line might be nice from some old friends of Favre’s ??

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Coach ~ You must remember how Favre can seem to get magic from O-lineman in the past…How he could get guys to block for him ??…I don’t know how he does it ??…O-lineman play their hearts out for the guy !!…It seems year in and year out ~ he will get the best from his O-lineman…

B. Grant says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:26 pm

OK Tomb. But there are two issues with an OL. One is individual skills, the second is playing as a unit. I don’t feel our OL is coached well along with some skill issues. One other thing about the Steelers and us:
Pittsburgh coach: Mike Tomlin
Viking coach: Brad Childress

I hope you are right Tomb, and I will be glad to say I was wrong if this all works out. I just don’t see it happening. But then what do I know. I thought TJack was ready last year. I was wrong.

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:37 pm

Tomb ~ All the negative stuff will stop with the first Berrian or Harvin bomb thrown in the first game of the year !!…

It will be SO COOL when the Vikes start winning games by “more” than 3 points !!!

Tomb... says:

July 15th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

“Pittsburgh coach: Mike Tomlin
Viking coach: Brad Childress”

Touché, coach, touché…

But again, that’s where I’m counting on ol’ Brett. When Bad Brad calls a 3 yard strike to Tahi on 3rd and 7, Brett will think “crazy old coot” and audibalize something that actually gets a first down. Wouldn’t that be strange and different!

bleed, I hope we’re right, or we’ll be sh*t magnets for the naysayers…=>

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 5:02 pm

Tomb ~ I figure if Favre stays healthy….And that at his age is a big “if” ??…
But if he does…The Vikes are going to rock and roll this year !!…

But I will take my just deserves if we tank the season with Favre…

I bleed purple says:

July 15th, 2009 at 5:09 pm

Coach is sticking to his guns…So he will earn the right for “I told you so” if Favre stinks it up…

I hope Coach doesn’t get that chance though..Keeping the fingers crossed for the play-offs…

Go Vikes !!

krugjr says:

July 15th, 2009 at 5:44 pm

love your thought of winning by more than 3 points…..isn’t that the truth!

GO VIKES!!!!!

Coach

appreciate your “stand”…..BUT, football IQ (I won’t say brains) at QB is something we haven’t had in more years than I can remember…..so I’ll take the smarts over the chunk of clay!

Hey,Troops! Wow, you guys a a strange ‘bunch’ of fans for “he-man” country! You got a football team you want to back? Got a head coach who’s trying to give you a winner? Got an owner who is willing to foot the bill for your recreation while he trys to make a buck ? You got a better plan after last years’ meltdown at QB under pressure? Who is Sage? What does his back-up QB resume’ look like? You guys need to watch some video of what it takes to play good football. No way one guy does it all. You better get the word out to the Viking grumblers that they need to bring their best game to “PRACTICE” and carry it over to GAME DAY, like last season. One thing they DON’T need is YOUR attitude. Keep THAT up & the Vikings will be moved to Vancouver for 2010! See what I’m sayin’? “I’ll leave the light on for ya!”
