Rice: “Learning from the best”

July 14th, 2009 – 8:07 AM by Chip Scoggins

Arizona Cardinals Pro Bowl receiver Larry Fitzgerald has invited some of the top wide receivers in the NFL to the Twin Cities this summer to workout with him. We had a chance to attend a workout last week and afterward Fitzgerald said that he was trying to get Vikings wide receiver Sidney Rice to take part in those sessions.

Rice took him up on the offer this week and went through his first workout on Monday. Former Vikings wide receiver Cris Carter also worked out along with Greg Jennings and DeAngelo Hall. Vikings second-year receiver Jaymar Johnson also is present.

Rice said he became a fan of Fitzgerald’s when he was in high school and even wore No. 1 because that was Fitzgerald’s number at Pitt.

Rice said he got pointers from Fitzgerald and Carter about route running and coming out of breaks. Here is his blog post on his personal website.

This is a important season for Rice coming off an injury-plagued 2008 season. Rice said his knee is fully healed and he expects to play at a high level. Certainly the fact that he’s willing to return to the Twin Cities to work with Fitzgerald and Carter is a positive step and a sign that he is serious about giving himself the best chance to succeed.
