Spielman discusses Winfield negotiations

June 17th, 2009 – 8:24 PM by Chip Scoggins

Paul Allen asked Rick Spielman about contract negotiations with veteran cornerback Antoine Winfield. Talks between the two sides broke off recently. Winfield, who is entering the final season on his current deal, did not participate in any OTAs and also missed the mandatory minicamp to attend the funeral of a friend’s mother.

“Antoine is a great football player for us and I know he’s one of the key parts of our defense,” Spielman said. “Just from the business perspective … it’s an ongoing process. It’s an ongoing negotiation. It’s all part of the business. We’re going to do everything that we can because Antoine is such an important part of our defense, an important part of our team. I know Coach Childress identifies the guys who are core guys and we’ll try to keep them all together as long as we can. We’ve been able to do that and hopefully we’ll have the same success with Antoine.”

What does Antoine feel about Chili going fishing with Andy Reid, the coach of the team that kicked our ass in the playoffs.
