Vikings linebacker Chad Greenway and his wife, Jenni, will host the third annual Greenway’s Gridiron Gallop 5K Fun Run/Walk on Sunday at Lake Nokomis. Funds raised by the event will go toward Minneapolis Park and Recreation board youth athletic programming. Other Vikings players, cheerleaders and members of the Vikings Women’s Organization also will take part.

In addition to Greenway, players scheduled to appear include Jeff Dugan, Jim Kleinsasser and John Sullivan. Players, along with cheerleaders, will be signing autographs for all participants. The event is $25. The cost is $10 for children (10 and under) to participate in the 8:30 a.m. Kids Fun Run. The first 250 participants will be given a free T-shirt.

Check-in and registration will take place at the Lake Nokomis bath house located at 4955 West Lake Nokomis Parkway. Check-in/registration is at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K run/walk starts at 9 a.m. Go to www.vikings.com to register and click on “events.” Registration also can done in-person the morning of the event.

Meanwhile, Matt Birk no longer is a member of the Vikings but he continues to do work for his HIKE Foundation in this community. Birk used to have a golf tournament each June to raise money but this year he has organized what is being billed as his “Inaugural Celebrity Gridiron Challenge — the ultimate flag football experience.”

The event will be held at 1 p.m. July 19 at Minnetonka High School. Admission is free and tickets won’t be required.

Celebrity participants will include Birk, Ben Leber, Gus Frerotte, Steve Hutchinson, Ryan Longwell, Chad Greenway, Rich Gannon and former Heisman trophy winners Chris Weinke and Steve Walsh. Each team of eight will be matched with a celebrity quarterback for three rounds of play.
