Report: Favre given deadline by Vikings

June 8th, 2009 – 11:02 AM by Judd Zulgad

Vikings coach Brad Childress has imposed a deadline of this week for Brett Favre to decide whether he will be the team’s quarterback for the 2009 season, according to ESPN.com. ESPN writers Chris Mortensen and Ed Werder cited two sources.

The ESPN report said Favre is apparently reluctant to commit to playing without first being more confident the arthroscopic surgery performed recently on his throwing shoulder has succeeded in eliminating all of the problems related to a torn biceps tendon. Favre, who turns 40 in October, announced his retirement in February and was released from the New York Jets reserve/retired list on April 28, setting off speculation that he would join the Vikings.

Favre had retired after 16 seasons with the Green Bay Packers in March 2008 but decided last summer he wanted to play after all. When the Packers told him they did not want him back, Favre tried to force his way to the Vikings but the Packers ended up trading him to New York in an ugly divorce.

It has been assumed by many that if Favre was going to play for the Vikings that he would not take part in their offseason program, despite the fact that Childress’ preference was almost certainly to get the future Hall of Fame quarterback to Minnesota as soon as possible. The Vikings have four more days of Organized Team Activities this week — today through Thursday — and then two more scheduled for next Monday and Tuesday. However, Childress could end the workouts after this week if he’s satisfied with his team’s progress.

Given that ESPN reported Sunday night that Favre remains unable to make a commitment because subsequent throwing sessions after his surgery indicate the shoulder is not yet 100 percent, it seems odd the Vikings would impose a deadline now.

Added the ESPN report: “It would seem reasonable that both Favre and the Vikings want to know the shoulder is healthy before reaching an agreement, and the team is virtually certain to insist on seeing the 39-year-old quarterback throw before any contract is signed.”

I’ll tell you what (And that’s a complete sentence in Texas,)
I was all in favor of Favre donning the purple but now, after all the BS and the fact that it looks like Sage is looking REAL good, I’d say pass on the dude. Let Sage start with Jackson as backup and keep grooming Booty.

I would suggest that Favre just keep farming untill all the money is gone. . .

If he is not willing to take part in the off season activities, and I mean at least be here wether he can throw yet or not, then we don’t need him.

This is a team, not Brett’s team. He is either part of it completely or not at all.

Right, Matt. But the report says the team will,”insist on seeing the 39-year-old quarterback throw”. So you know that means a little rock tossin’ where the “people beat their feet on the Mississippi Mud”.

Bad Brad, telling Favre to pick up what he’s throwin’ down.

Hopefully Brad didn’t assert himself personally with a phone call. As confusing as Brad-speak can be, Brett may have no idea he was given an ultimatum.

[…] The recovery time is supposed to take 4-6 weeks, and it is reported that Brad Childress gave Brett a deadline to make his mind up whether he is healthy enough to play or not.  If he does, it looks like the competition is for backup, but that causes its own set of new issues.  Right now the Vikings presently have 4 quarterbacks on their roster: […]

I agree with what Mr. Matt said, but with some concerns. Perhaps BF is not being as much of a prima dona as first suspected and is only concerned with his continued ability to perform.
Until both the Vikings and Farve are sure that he has recovered or will recover there is no point in talking about him or having him here. He is already a distraction and he hasn’t even said anything.
However, after the fiasco in NY with him not associating much with the team and none of his teammates reportedly very sorry to see him leave, if he is going to join this team he needs to jump in with both feet and be part of it. But they need to be sure he will be able to perform.

Interesting, after all that has transpired over the past month and a half, that Childress would choose this time to impose a deadline. If, as he implied last year, that he and Favre are friends from “way back”, and thus engage in occasional conversation, it would seem a bit harsh to put such a deadline on a “friend” who just went through surgery to repair an injury that could possibly help him, help you. However, nothing concerning this whole saga makes sense except for this observation: “Making any sense” is not something we should expect from this organization.

I think Judd hit it right on the head..The OTA’s are most likely over this week…If the Vikes announce Favre signing this weekend would be the best timimg for the announcement (deadline)..It would not interfere with the OTA’s this week…And the dust could settle with the media before training camp starts..And players could get used to the idea also during that time…And to understand too..Someone will most likely be let go….Of course thats “if” Favre does come to the Vikes…But the timing makes sense…

Neilwpg,
That Favre would not be missed by his NY Jets teammates due to reports of his being “disconnected or disinterested” is hardly difficult to understand. Favre clearly felt that he was being shipped to NY by Thompson as a last show of “Who’s in charge”. Favre had no desire to play there, or be anything more than a mercenary QB for them. Likely, he played out the season, hoping to get a full release to do what he wanted to do and thus, had no incentive to “bond” with his teammates.
Further, it would make no sense to be here, trying to bond with our players, if in fact, he simply can’t get healthy after this surgery, and thus can’t play again.

Oh noes… Picture this.

Sign Favre. Cut Booty.

Favre fails or is injured. T Jack and Sage get us to layoffs for one and done.

Booty picked up and becomes starter in next year due to injuries by some other succesful team.

I know, it’s a stretch, but I just dreamed up that scenario while in my thinking chair.

Chilly is a moron give him a deadline of a week after he had surgery last month so he can sign or not sign before he knows he’s healthy. Brilliant www.minnesotamomentum.com

They learned a lesson with Thigpen…

T Jack had his chance…He was given a chance to succeed and failed..He most likely will be the odd man out…My guess T Jack gets the ax…

I call BS on this latest report. Chilli may have given him a timeline to when he needs to decide, but werder and mortenson and just spitballing. With no OTA’s to report to there realy isnt much of a rush to get him here.

The immediate cut would clearly be Sean Glennon to make a roster spot for Favre.

The team would carry Favre, Jackson, Booty and Rosenflugle through the summer and imo, the loser of the Jackson v. Sage battle for the #2 job would be sent packing with Booty being given the #3 job.

The mind set of the coaching staff and players needs closure though…Question marks on QB situation need to be answered…

Remember how pissed off L Coles got last year when Favre came and
C Pennington left ??…Those are the things the Vikings want to avoid…

kennyrogers says:

Right, Bleed. We need to avoid a scenario where Bobby Wade would be pissed if T.Jack left and Favre comes here, lol.

Somehow, I can’t wrap my head around the notion that Childress would set a deadline at this time. To me, this looks more like an attempt by Childress to create a distraction for either the fans, the media, or his opponents this coming season. Otherwise, there’s no logic involved. Mind you, I can’t remember a time when logic was ever his strong suit, but still, come on……
