Brett Favre’s desire to play for the Vikings has led him to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair his injured passing shoulder but that doesn’t mean the quarterback will be wearing purple in 2009.
ESPN cited two sources Sunday in reporting that Favre had the procedure performed last month, but also added that Favre remains unable to make a commitment because subsequent throwing sessions indicate the shoulder is not yet 100 percent. Favre retired from the New York Jets in February at least in part because of a partially torn biceps tendon in his throwing arm.
Favre, 39, has thrown on a limited basis since the surgery, according to the all-sports network, but has not felt close to “100 percent” and would not come back unless he makes significant progress.
The Jets released Favre from their reserve/retired list in late April and at that point speculation began that Favre would attempt to end his second shot at retirement by playing for the Vikings in 2009. The Vikings have done little to end that talk by not dismissing the fact they have interest in Favre.
Coach Brad Childress said on Friday that he wasn’t even thinking about Favre when asked if there might be a deadline on when he would want an answer on if Favre is going to try to play. “I’m thinking about the next four OTAs next week,” Childress said, describing his mindset. Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels have been splitting snaps with the first-team offense in offseason workouts in anticipation of battling for the starting job in training camp. Obviously, that wouldn’t happen if Favre signs.
According to the ESPN story, Favre started considering his options to repair the injury in May when he met with noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. James Andrews. The two discussed both surgical and non-surgical options, but it was believed that Favre had serious reservations about undergoing any type of surgical procedure. The non-surgical option was for Favre to attempt to complete the tear on his own. But ESPN reported that cortisone injections and exercise therapies, that included weight lifting, failed to release the damaged tendon naturally and Favre consented to the surgical procedure.
Favre’s agent, Bus Cook, declined to confirm or deny the surgery when contacted by ESPN. “That’s a confidential client privilege,” Cook said. Cook told the Associated Press on Friday that while he speaks with Favre on a daily basis he was unaware of any pending change in his client’s plans. However, Cook added that, “We’ve all changed our minds, I guess.”
The AP story also found it interesting that Cook then began touting Favre’s ability. “I would think [the Vikings] would pull out all the stops if they want to get the guy,” Cook said. “I think Brett Favre just brings a whole new ballgame to any ballclub. That’s no reflection on the guys that are on their team at quarterback right now, but Brett’s in a different league than most.”
The timing of this news is not a surprise given that the Vikings are close to wrapping up their Organized Team Activities. It’s long been assumed that if Favre is going to attempt to play for the Vikings he wasn’t going to participate in the team’s offseason program. The Vikings hold four more OTA practices this week (Monday through Thursday) and although they have two more scheduled on June 15-16, Childress usually cancels those. The Vikings are scheduled to begin their training camp practices on July 31.
While Favre would need to become familiar with the Vikings personnel, he already knows much of their West Coast scheme. The Vikings run an offense that is very similar to what the Green Bay Packers used during much of Favre’s 16 seasons with that team.

As Dan Cole would say, he’s comin!! He’s comin!!
Well, it appears we finally have some news. Hopefully, this isn’t one of those “Yahoo”-type things.
Brett Favre’s determination to play quarterback this season for the Minnesota Viking prompted him to undergo arthroscopic surgery to repair his injured passing shoulder recently, according to two sources. However, Favre remains unable to make a commitment because subsequent throwing sessions indicate the shoulder is not yet 100 percent.
Keeps the off-season bubbling with news…now really shock us and sign Plaxico Burress…have a metal detector installed

Brett should show up at Hattiesburg High School pretty soon…
The main point is..It sounds like Brett “did” have the surgery…If he did that.. Brett has done “everything” he can do to “at this time” to play for the Vikings this year…Training camp will be plenty early enough for him to come in…He knows the system already…
Just have to wait now and see if the shoulder feels good enough for him to play ??…
I just hope Werder and Mortenson got it right this time !!!
favre still needs major surgery, getting his head removed from his okole
he may never recover, but it’s a risk I’m willing to live with
Go Vikings!!!!! …….. practice!!!!!
I can’t believe everyone is so excited about this egomaniac joinng the Vikes. Actually, he don’t give a krap about any of us or the Vikes, it is only another chance to feed his HUGE ego. By signing him, we are going bachwards. Remember, both the Pack and the Jets told him to get lost.

I was under the impression that when Bevell was his Quarterback coach at GB that he had some bad years with him. Somewhat puzzled if this is true, why he would want to play for him. Also, Chili better be really loosening up because his ‘nobody audibles - just run the play we called’ philosophy will be challenged as soon as Brett walks in.
This is a no lose move for the purple because if he doesn’t work out , you go back to the 2 options you were going with anyway.Cook says “We’ve all changed our minds, I guess.”
I always love that one . . .
Judd?Chip…Are you going to have a live chat tomorrow ??…It would be nice to hear some comments on this new info ??…
look for peter king’s monday morning QB, he stated he’d have more on the favre situation on twitter. i think its usually posted around midnight tonight.
I agree braino ~ Its not like Favre is a “long term” situation here…If the experiment fails..The Vikes lose nothing..And can grab another QB prospect in next April’s draft…
Favre would sell tickets !!…Why not ??
The way I look at this whole thing…Favre is going to be the most critical of “himself” than anybody else in this situation !!…
He wants to come back and WIN !!…
He does not want to give T Thompson a chance to say
“I told you so” about Brett being over the hill and should retire….
Brett wants to come back and make a point…That he can still play at a high level…And he will take a hard look at himself and his own ability to make that judgement…Thats just Brett…
Oh, the Jets and GB shut him down. Ooooh. What am I missing here? The Jets and Packers SUCK!!!! That BF is a great QB has NEVER been questioned. When he picks the Vikes he shows what a true genius he is.

to all the packer fans that thought it was funny that favre shunned the vikings when chilldress flew to meet with him….man he must really want to put it to teddy t! what are all the sports bars gonna do with all their favre memorbilia when he dons purple? now thats funny!
hey luie, i have to agree about the ego thing but he gives the vikes the best chance at qb. i mean seriously, have you seen tjak and sage play? they are both equally horrible. at least favre at age 40 is a winner. if we cant get a franchise qb then an ex all-pro will do. he never wanted to play in NY, did you see his press conf. when he was traded? now he gets a chance to play where he wants and i could care less about his ego, its a team game and by now he probably knows he doesnt have to do it all by himself with possibly the best back behind him to ever carry a football.
I Bleed, Not sure we’ll be doing a live chat Monday but we’ll try to get one fired up early in the week.
Thanks Judd !!!…Look forward to it !!!
Good idea BIG VIKING. If we signed Brett AND Plaxico we would have two gunslingers and could run the shotgun.
Or we couldn’t.
