Winfield issues statement

June 4th, 2009 – 11:40 PM by Judd Zulgad

Vikings cornerback Antoine Winfield issued a statement late tonight regarding his absence from the Vikings’ offseason practices. Winfield is entering the last year of his contract and has not attended any of the Vikings’ OTAs and also missed the three-day minicamp last weekend.

Asked about the contract issue today, coach Brad Childress said: “I would not speak for him. I’d say you have to ask him. I’m not coloring it any way. You would have to check his reasons.”

So we did.

And this was Winfield’s response: “I want all to know that I’m not at OTAs because I don’t want to be there. I do want to be there! As I have stated before, I want to finish my career a Viking.”

If you stumble over that first sentence read it aloud and it will help. Winfield’s point is he does want to be at OTAs and he does want to finish his career in Minnesota.

However, neither Winfield or Childress mentions that the reality of the situation is this is all about a contract. Business is business, folks. It doesn’t mean something isn’t going to get done but for right now things are on hold and both sides are holding firm.

It’s too bad this is happening but you can understand it from both sides. Winfield is coming off a Pro Bowl season and wants to cash in on his next (and probably last) contract. Vikes are worried about committing too much money over too long a term to a guy his age playing a speed/agility/reflexes position. Unfortunately, with Winfield holding out (if it continues for very long), he may not have as good a season this year and the Vikes may feel forced to trade him.
Either way, we lose.

Right, Neil. Windfield is telling me he doesn’t think the Vikes can go all the way anyway so get the money now and run. My advice is to get the dollar signs out of your eyes and get in the fold and help your team win a championship and you will be rich and famous beyond your wildest dreams.

Trade him. He’s a good player, but he is 32. I’m sure he and especially his agent are being greedy because he wants to take the money and run. He has one maybe two more years ahead of him and there is no way I am over paying this guy. He is the best tackling CB in the league, but his cover skills to me are questionable. Too small and a bit too slow to cover #1 receivers in this league. He’s probably asking for top pay. I would trade him and go after Sheppard from Philly if your going to spend the money get something for a long term player not one who wants to ride off into the sunset and kick-back. Last time I checked, WInfield IS still under contract for the year and he is going to sit out? Is he getting fined?
