Peterson discusses Favre speculation

May 14th, 2009 – 3:23 PM by Chip Scoggins

Adrian Peterson did an interview with ESPN News from a Nike event at U.C.-Irvine, where Nike is launching its latest training shoe. Here is a transcript of his interview:

Q: What are your thoughts on the possibility of Brett Favre coming to the Vikings?

Peterson: ”I know it’s a possibility, so just him coming in, just the leadership he would definitely bring. A guy that’s well respected, been around the league a long time. I’m a big fan of him. I grew up watching him and just loving the passion he played with. That would be something he would definitely bring to the locker room.”

Q: How much have you weighed the pros and cons of Favre coming to the Vikings? The fact he might not be healthy and throws a lot of interceptions?

Peterson: ”I really haven’t been trying to focus too much on it. I love watching the sports channels, so it’s always on there. But other than that I’ve really just been focused on getting my body right and doing the things I need to do to be able to contribute to the team this year.”

Q: What would Favre provide to the Vikings because a lot of people feel he is the last hurdle to this team getting to the Super Bowl?

Peterson: ”We’ve got Tarvaris Jackson and Sage Rosenfels. The only thing I would say is those guys, especially Tarvaris, he’s young in his career. I’m not making any type of excuses for him or whatnot. But he’s got all the time in the world. If Brett Favre was to come in it would be someone that could fine-tune him. You can definitely learn a lot from a quarterback that is going to be in the Hall of Fame. So, definitely a teacher, a leader.”

Q: If Favre doesn’t return, how confident are you in what you already have in those two quarterbacks?

Peterson: ”I’m so confident in Tarvaris. Really haven’t seen too much of Sage but Tarvaris has got all the talent. He’s got everything. He’s got a good arm, is talented. He’s got everything it takes to make it in this league. So, I know he’s been doing a lot this offseason to get his body right, his mind right. Most importantly to be able to come out and get the starting job.”

Q: So you are putting on weight?

Peterson: ”I’m trying to put on a couple of pounds. It’s a long season, you take a lot of wear and tear during the season. Just bulk up a little bit to be able to endure that. Really make guys feel me even more when I come through the hole. That’s pretty much what that’s all about.”

Q: How much have you gained?

Peterson: ”Right now, I’m probably like about 217, 218 but solid. It’s muscle. Make sure I’m putting the pounds on in the right spot, the right areas.”

Q: How are you making sure you don’t slow down?

Peterson: ”Just doing the things that I’ve been doing. My agility work, my flexibility. Flexibility is definitely key I think to keeping your speed, maintaining your speed. But just really, most important than that, just your mindset. A lot of guys say, ‘You [gain] 5, 10 pounds it’s going to slow you down a notch or this or that.’ My mindset, I feel like I can put on 20 pounds and keep my same speed, my same flexibility. That’s the mindset I have. So, I feel like I can accomplish that.”
