Report: Favre to stay retired

May 7th, 2009 – 2:35 PM by Judd Zulgad

Quarterback Brett Favre will not sign with the Vikings and will remain retired, according to Yahoo! Sports. A source told the website that Favre informed Vikings coach Brad Childress that he wanted to remain retired in a phone call that took place sometime in the last day.

That is why Childress abandoned his plans to travel to Mississippi on Wednesday to meet with Favre about playing for the Vikings in 2009. Yahoo’s report says that Favre is expected to publicly explain his decision soon.

Favre’s decision comes as a surprise to many in the Vikings organization who felt he would take the opportunity to end a second consecutive retirement and play at least a season for the team.

Update: Childress declined comment through a team spokesman on Thursday evening.

Favre is damaged goods, as far as I’m concerned. Just watch, as the weeks unfold, and training camp nears, he’ll want to come back. Do we really need that drama? Stay retired Favre. Please. Wear them Wranglers, and stay retired.

cjvirnig says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

Yes! This is the best possible news Vikings fans could possibly receive. Brett Favre is not only too old and broken down physically, but his style of play is polar opposite to the run-oriented system the Vikings will employ. Despite what some say, there was never a symbiotic fit between the two parties. I’m not suggesting Sage Rosenfels or Tarvaris Jackson are necessarily the long term answer for the Vikings at qb, but at least 2009 will allow the team to make that determination. Signing Favre would have just delayed that qb competition yet another year.

vikingsuperfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:12 pm

I am with dre on this one

vikingsuperfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:14 pm

I have to agree with dre on this one.

BTW, Klink made his bed by drafting T-Joke and trading for Sage. If these guys do not work out, he should not be given a new contract or get fired. Simple.

How about calling the Cards and inquire about Leinart. I believe he would be an updgrade over Sage and T-Joke.

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:28 pm

I hope he sticks to his word this time.

I would say the Vikes need to have some patience, and perhaps a new option will come available after rookie contracts are negotiated, cap casualties hit the market, and training camp cuts happen.

If not, Rosenfels is a servicable QB.

This is terrible. If you think it’s a good thing, and that Sage/Jackson will be any kind of an answer…no way.

All this does is allow guys like Winfield to get another year older and AP to face relentless 8-man fronts.

And if T-Jack ends up being the starter, I riot.

GBPackFan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Psych! What else did you expect from Favre? He gives you a little maybe, then says no. Next week it might be maybe again. The week after it will be definitely not.

They should go after michael vick now

airedale84 says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:30 pm

Gee, if they wanted a veteran to lead this high-powered offense, it would’ve been good to have a back-up plan about now. Too bad that with no Favre available, we couldn’t turn to Jeff Garcia, who would have done the trick; isn’t it just like Childress to get outmaneuvered by the Oakland Raiders, the worst organization in the NFL?

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:32 pm

Maybe Childress just wanted to ask Brett how good Kellen Clemens actually is??

siamese says:

Great job of “inside” reporting, Judd and Chip….NOT! Childress played you guys for stooges; if you haven’t figured that out, you’re dumber than I thought.

petey says:

I can’t believe that you all thought Brett freaking Favre at age 40 is actually the key to a Super Bowl. I don’t get the attraction there… at this point he’s nothing but name recognition in what would’ve been a publicity stunt.

MMinSD says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:39 pm

YES!!! Best news we could get. Don’t know what’s with all these Vikings ‘fans’ who have been falling all over themselves hoping we get this disease on our squad. Only thing he cares about is getting back at Ted Thompson. If he went 0-2 against the Pack were you morons thinking he’d really care about the rest of the games!?

petey says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Even at 40 freaking years old he is still lights years better than Sage or TJ.

MMinSD says:

YESSS!!! Best news any true Vikes fans could ask for. Don’t understand all you loons who apparently don’t appreciate a quality rivalry and would be happy to have the most iconic symbol of it on our own squad. Not to mention you folks were probably also the same cats that were talking about how lousy he was the last few seasons before this nonsense started! You wanted a guy on our team that would only actually care about 2 games out of a 16 game season, unbelievable. I’m sure his heart would’ve really been in it if he were to go 0-2 against the Pack.

WOOT!!! Such great news. Let’s hope he doesn’t flip flop.

FariboVikesFan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:44 pm

Jimbo - your are a bigger stooge for not only reading, but posting that garbage as well.

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:45 pm

No way, Favre would be a slight upgrade for the first half of the season. In the second half of the season, when Brett’s body starts to break down again and out compeition gets tougher, then I’d take Sage over Brett any day.

Too many “Ifs” flying around about Favre.

Yuleluder says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Well without Farve we will have trouble being a 10 win team this year. Favre makes the vikings 3 times better then they are now. I hope Childress has a contingency plan………..

petey says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

Then when your Sage starts throwing INTs and losing games, then you make sure you get on here and defend him then!

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:48 pm

3 times better!?! That’s insane, you people give Adrian, allen, Winfield, WilliamsWall, E.J., etc, etc no credit. This is a team built to win, and the QB situation is not nearly as bad as everyone over-exaggerates about. Craziness… craziness.

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:49 pm

petey, I’ve never had any problem getting on here and eating crow if need be. Don’t think that’s a threat at all… I’ll be here.

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:51 pm

Jimbo says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:53 pm

What garbage, Faribo? I think Chilly knew all along he wasn’t going to get Favre. He did it to humor all the dreamers who thought this narcissist was goint to bring us to the Super Bowl. Don’t get me wrong; the quarterback situation on this team is tragic. But getting Favre is NOT the solution. I don’t think the Vikings locker room is big enough for his ego.

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:55 pm

petey, in football terms instead of dickhead terms, can you explain why Brett Favre is THAT much better than Sage Rosenfels in 2009? It was a publicity move to increase sales… not a football move to increase wins.

MMinSD says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:58 pm

durr durr because he’s a gunslinger, akvikesfan, he likes to throw it out there and doesn’t take well to being coached!

Ah man this is such great news. I never thought that I would be on a boat.

ks1980 says:

May 7th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

I think if Brett had gotten the arm fixed he would be better than any qb the Vikings currently have. He still was not the long term answer. Since it is being reported that he is staying retired Childress could now have locker room issues. While it is not the same scale as in Denver and so far Sage has said all the right things to the press what kind of message did Childress send to the QB’s ? Either way hopefully it is over with Farve.

I think we have seen enough of Jackson and should give Sage a chance. I have not seen Sage play alot but he has not had the supporting cast around him like he will have with the Vikings.

isaac1975 says:

I’ve read every moron’s post on these blogs for the past 48 hours, and every single one has been nothing short of sh*tting on themselves, gushing about how someone they hated for 16 years was coming to commandeer they’re rotten franchise. Now that he’s ’staying retired’… everyone’s jumping ship. Typical Minnesotan response. You clowns deserve nothing but the d-bags who write for this crummy paper, and the hopeless professional and collegiate teams residing here.

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 4:26 pm

exactly, Favre’s a name, a HOF name, but at this point he’s a name.

If his arm is healthy…

If he’s not a distraction…

If he’s not a diva…

If he can stand handing the ball to A.D. that much…

If he still has gas in the tank…

If his heart is still in it…

If he can get back to 2007 form…

If the price is right…

If the surgery only requires quick rehab…

DEFINETLY a popular name.

To me, that’s all there is, one sure thing and that’s the name that’ll be on the back of the jersey. Everything else is one giant “IF.”

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Meat, you didn’t see me saying we should go get him. Oh, and by the way, what exactly are you referring to when you say “Meat Grinder.” That sounds not good, pal…

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 4:34 pm

And petey, i understand what you are saying, I really do… I just disagree. Rosnefels is not a superstar… he had issues taking care of the ball last year, and there is a reason why he’s never been a starter. But I also truly believe, that Favre has degraded enough at this point, that Favre would not be an upgrade. If you watch the film, he was immobile, making some really errant throws accompanied by terrible reads, and generally inaffective all together. He’s washed up and isn’t THAT big of an upgrade to Sage… that’s what I mean. I think he’d perform great for the firs tthree games (Lions, Browns, Niners) and then it’d be all down hill from there when he gets banged around a bit (hopefully not by MeatGrinder) and we start playing teams like the Ravens and Steelers.

packersfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

I was so relieved to here this news. No matter what would of happened Brett Favre will always be a Green Bay Packer regardless.I’m hoping part of his decision was based on the legacy he built in Green Bay and the millions of fans that supported him through the years. Brett is an icon to us Packers fans much like AP is to you Viking’s fans. The thought of him wearing purple made me sick..I’m so elated that he made the decision he did. The Vikings will have there hall of famer some day (AP) Let the Packers fans have theirs. Him wearing purple just wouldn’t be right.Good luck to all you viking fans in what should be a great season…

You could see early in Favre’s career he would do great things much like you can see the same in AP’s early career. Vikings just need an above average quarter back to help him out a little.

This is just a way for Favre to say that he doesn’t want to participate in OTA’s with the Vikings. When June 15th rolls around, you’ll find that Favre suddenly wants to play again. He wants to ride in on his white horse and act like he’s the savior of the franchise. Until he or the Vikings come’s out and PUBLICLY announces that they have no interest in returning, your gonna have to continue to read all this crap. Trust me, until every franchise in this league says no to Favre’s behind the scene’s phone calls, you’ll be reading about Favre’s possible comeback. Favre will not retire until the limelight is taken away from him. He loves it too much to quit on his own. Just ask Cris Carter.

The vikings should bring in Levi Jones to counter Brett’s bluff… make him think that $17 million in cap space will go to another player… and then see what he thinks about staying retired… if they want Favre that is… which i hope they don’t.

dre says:

super toe: while i once was a fan of jacksons’….your statement is a bit harsh. jackson was thrown into the fire way too early in his career. after brad johnson left…they should’ve gotten a replacement for him to start…and left tarvaris on the sideline holding a clip board. i blame childress for t-jax regression. for some strange reason or another he was desperate to get him on the field.

t-jax has a lot of upside….but right now we don’t need a lot of upside. we need somebody that can come in here take the keys to the car and bring it home in one piece. i think sage can do that. with tarvaris and gus we had average qb play and went 10-6. with sage i believe we will have above average qb play to compliment our stout run game and stout defense and we might get one or two more wins as a result.

let this favre isht die and lets move onto bigger things….like getting winfield inked and lets hear about how sage is taking to the offense and lets hear how ap is doing after gaining a few pounds. these are real points of discussion.

I WISH ALL VIKES FANS WOULD JUST QUIT WHINNING AND SUPPORT THE TEAM. THIS IS WHY THE VIKES ARE GOING TO LEAVE MINNY. IF YOU WERE TRUE FANS YOU WOULD CALL YOUR REPS AND SENETORS AND DEMAND THAT A NEW STADIUM BE BUILT FOR THIS TEAM. THAT IS HOW YOU SHOW SUPPORT, NOT BY SAYING THAT YOUR NOT GOING TO BUY TICKETS ANYMORE JUST BECAUSE OF 1 PLAYER IS NOT GOING TO PLAY FOR OUR TEAM. YES IT IS OUR TEAM SO YOU BETTER START ACTING LIKE IT OR THEY WILL BE GONE, THEN YOU CAN REALLY WHINE CAUSE ALL YOU WILL HAVE IS NOTHING.

toledorio is right… Favre is just trying to stay on top of Manny on the ESPN ticker… this’ll drag on for awhile. Like I said, this is just a bluff to try and squeeze more money becuase the Vikes gave Favre ALL the leverage right off the bat in this deal. They’re in too deep…

Long time, no post. But this is ridiculous.
If you are a true Viking fan, how could you ever, ever, hope to see Favre in a Viking uniform?

Or think about this:
As a Viking fan, if you were to lose to the Packers, would you rather have:
A. Favre as your quarterback
B. Jackson/Rosenfels as your quarterback.

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

norseman, couldn’t agree more.

norseman66 says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:05 pm

Stafford ans Sanchez will fall victim to the same reasons why T-Jack hasn’t fully produced yet. They will be rushed out on the field and be expected to win way before they are ready. Although Stafford has 41.7 million reasons not to care.

siamese says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

norseman, the Vikings already know what they have in T-Jack. Rosenfels has been nothing but a career backup and I doubt Booty will ever be a starter in the NFL.

banshee says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:10 pm

I have to admit I was sort of intrigued by the idea of Favre playing for us this year. But if he’s not sure or he’s not totally committed it’s better we found out now.

williams wall says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:11 pm

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

The income tax alone fromt he Player salaries and Vikings employees and stadium employees should enough reason to build a new stadium, IMHO

Vike Mike says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

Hey Williams Wall: I’ll buy tickets alright….a ONE-WAY ticket for Brad Childress to leave Minnesota!

norseman66 says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:15 pm

siamese,

There is one difference and ironically for the same reason. Rosenfels has never had the opportunity to compete for a starting job. When Schaub rolled into the Texans, he was named the starter immediately without question or competrition. In a similar twist, Jackson was annoited the starter and nobody was brought in to compete with him.

akvikesfan says:

JDUBBS1280 says:

So, according to Bus Cook, he knows nothing. And according to Scott Hansen of NFL.com, no one on the Vikings coaching staff was brought into the loop.

Only Childress, Spielman, and Wilf were aware of the details of the situation.

So, who is leaking these stories? Who are these “anonymous sources”. Seems like every credible lead we have heard about has turned out to be anything but credible.

Thats the best news i’ve heard all week!!!!!! I can’t believe most vikings fans actually wanted favre. Well I guess if you wanted Brett Favre as a vikings then you aren’t really a true vikings fan! Thats like peyton manning getting hurt and the colts fans wanting tom brady, ( well except for the fact brady is good!) Now lets quit complaining about our lack of a top quarterback and be happy we have the best running back in the league, one of the best rush offenses, and a top 5 defense. Oh and can we please stop pleading for childress to get fired. Coaches are hired and fired on performance and we just won the nfc north! and thats with what most fans constantly say is a quarterback that can win games!?!?

I think Judd has said “F@$% This!” after a long night of staying awake waiting for word from Favre and Chili’s meeting.

When this morning came and Judd found out that Chili had actually spent the night in Minnie sleeping like a bald baby, Judd got angry and went home to drink three bottles of scotch and catch up on sleep.

Bones says:

Apparently Access Vikings no longer works with Firefox. I thought I had been banned!

Once again, Brad Childress is left with egg on his face. Now he gets to try and mend fences with T-Joke and Rosenfels.

And to all you fans that were against Favre because he once played for our biggest rival I offer this advice: get over it. We missed out on a chance to upgrade what is arguably the weakest position on the team. And the fact that management was so aggressive in their pursuit of Favre should tell you that they don’t have a ton of confidence in what we currently have at the quarterback position.

You’re fooling yourselves if you honestly believe that Rosenfels or T-Joke are better options than a future Hall of Famer. Favre is one season removed from throwing over 4000 yards and almost 30 scores. That’s 10 more than T-Joke has for his CAREER. And for those who love to remind us all of #4’s interception issues, Sage has 29 career picks to go with his 30 career TDs.

It says a lot when fans are willing to accept mediocrity because they can’t swallow their pride…

akvikesfan says:

May 7th, 2009 at 7:48 pm

Don’t you find it funny that Brett Favre allegedly turned down the Vikings, yet Brad Childress and the rest of the organization still has “no comment”.

This isn’t over. Not by a LONG SHOT.

norseman66 says:

May 7th, 2009 at 8:17 pm

VM,

Relax dude, Vikes just had another good draft, AP should be able to run for 2,000+ yards behind the biggest OL in the NFL. It’ll be alright!! Really, can you imagine the holes Loadholt is going to open up for AP on the right side this year! AP for MVP!!

Vike Mike says:

May 7th, 2009 at 8:24 pm

Yeah, that Loadholt is a FEEKING MONSTER! But…I still will be crushed if Favre doesn’t come. I have always been a Vikings fan, but I have to admit, I always loved watching Favre play! I admire the heart of gold, the love for the game and the gunslinging that he brought to the NFL. I even considered myself a Viking/Packer fan for many years…..but ONLY because Favre was there! When he left, I no longer cared about the butt-Packers.

LONG LIVE KING FAVRE!!

norseman66 says:

May 7th, 2009 at 8:33 pm

IMHO, I really don’t think he would be a great fit. If they were to pass 30-35 times a game then I would say sure, but when you have the “07″ OROY, last years rushing leader and I just think you need to keep giving the rock to AP. I also think Sage will beat out TJ and will be a pleasant surprise to a lot of people. There were a lot of people down here in Houston who thought the Texans should have gotten rid of Schaub instead of Rosenfels.

Say it ain’t so
Klink went after Favre
to come to Minnesota
and save his freakin’ job

Even with the bait
that is Berrian, Harvin, and “All-Day”
Klink could not convince
the Mighty Favre to play

All that is left
is the nasty egg on Klink’s face
and still no QB
to run his KAO

So it is time to focus on
the 2009 season with Sage and T-Jax
but due to Klink’s decisions
there will be no SuperBowl

now childress is declining to address the media?? this is going to turn into a much unneeded circus and may become a distraction. i just hope sage remains a professional about all of this and stays the course to take the job from tarvaris. once a tarvaris supporter and now i support him to stand on the sidelines holding a clipboard. he clearly is not ready.
brett is not a instant remedy to our qb situation….this would totally be a fly by night decision that will come back and kick us in the ass.
