Childress, Favre meeting set

May 6th, 2009 – 12:46 PM by Judd Zulgad

Vikings coach Brad Childress is expected to depart for Mississippi later today and meet with quarterback Brett Favre tonight and Thursday, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. Childress remained at Winter Park early this afternoon but the source said he is expected to have dinner with Favre this evening and begin discussions about Favre joining the Vikings.

The in-depth portion of the meeting is expected to take place Thursday. Among the Vikings’ chief concerns is the status of Favre’s injured right biceps. At this point, the meeting is expected to take place in Mississippi, where Favre lives.

Favre, the longtime Green Bay Packers star, was granted his release from the Jets’ reserve/retired list last week and thus is free to sign with any team he wants. Favre announced his retirement for a second consecutive offseason in February after a season with the Jets. Favre retired in March 2008 from the Packers but changed his mind.

The Packers did not want him back and at that point he set his sights on playing for the Vikings. The Packers made sure that didn’t happen by trading Favre to New York.

Yes, rock skipping in Mississippi. May as well use the Mississippi River, which also runs through Minneapolis, but some of you may know that. But I’m sure Chili will want to know if Brett’s going to treat the janitor the same as the owner, and if he tells a lie, to remember what lie he told last. Then he’ll grab him and squeeze his knee, get snapshots, and take Brett and put him in his car and drive him around Lake Minnetonka and ride all day long.

Well, if Zygi is more concerned with avoiding blackouts than making a run deep into the playoffs, he seems to have found a way to do that. So if this happens, does Jackson get cut? Booty? And what’s the 2010 QB situation look like? I’m SO sick of how this team continues to bring in these gray-haired veteran retreads whose primes were 10+ years ago to play QB.

acrimsonbuillit says:

Viking fans, go ahead, take him. Packer fans don’t want this egotistical 40 year old baby that is Brett Favre. He is a horrible teammate (ask the Jets), is injured, and has faltered when it counts the most. The ONLY reason he is coming back is to “get back” at the Packers. He could care less about the Vikings or their fans.

FariboVikesFan says:

If the arm is healthy, he is upgrade over what we have.

GBPackFan says:

Packers fans squirming? Au contraire. I hope you guys get him. Only then will you truly understand the agony that goes along with having Favre on your team. Sure he still makes a lot of good plays, but just wait until you get into a playoff situation and he throws 3 or 4 INTS to clinch it for the opposition. When that happens (and I guarantee it will) I’ll shake my head and feel sympathy for Vikings fans. For about 2 seconds. Then I’ll have a good laugh.

I think Favre needs the Vikes way more than the Vikes need Favre. No other team in the NFC North will want him. And he won’t go anywhere unless he can get a chance to stick it to the Packers. Man, that hate must run deep.

fidelito62 says:

May 6th, 2009 at 2:09 pm

It’s sort of reminding me of Childress’s meeting with Harvin, where he had gazed Bush-like into the young man’s eyes, and then decided to make him the pick. The bottom line with Favre is he can work out really well…. or not. The problem as I see it is the man who’s making the decision is the guy who nobody in MN trusts to make the right decision. The guy who has already chased three QB’s out of town. Most of all though, I think Childress has finally decided to take some big risks in order to save his job. Anything is better than 3 yard outs to Tahi. Except an opponent returning a Favre duck 50 yards for a TD. That’s probably worse.

andrew.poole says:

May 6th, 2009 at 3:43 pm

Brett will tremendously help the Vikings. Sure, he fell during the last 5 games of last year, but go ahead and look at the number of times he was sacked. The bottom line is, the Jets made him throw way too much, and offered little protection behind center. In 2007-08 season, Brett was sacked half as much and performed twice as well. All that aside, it can’t hurt to Brett Favre mentoring the rest of our QB crew.

GO VIKES!

ajaworski says:

andrew.poole says:

May 6th, 2009 at 4:12 pm

Hmmm….like our current QB crew isn’t known to throw interceptions during critical moments. I don’t think this aspect of the Vikings can get any worse…with our without Favre.
