Winfeld contract talks ongoing

April 27th, 2009 – 4:59 PM by Judd Zulgad

Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman said during a conference call with season-ticket holders today that the team is having ongoing contact with cornerback Antoine Winfield regarding a new contract. Winfield’s contract expires after the 2009 season and the Vikings and Winfield’s agent have been engaged in discussions for several weeks. It appeared something might be close a few weeks ago but nothing was finalized.

“[There is] not a specific deadline,” Spielman said. “We love Antoine and we’ve always tried to keep all our core guys together as long as we can keep them together.”

The Vikings did draft Georgia cornerback Asher Allen in the third round this past weekend.

Spielman also said the Vikings have started initial contract talks with guys entering the final year of their contracts. That list includes running back Chester Taylor, defensive end Ray Edwards and quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

Spielman spoke during the Vikings’ first-ever Fan Forum conference call with season ticket holders.

Gee, hopefully they lock up Tarvaris. Imagine that powerhouse going elsewhere.

give winfield a two year extension…lock him up, he hasn’t dropped off and he finally got some respect and made thepro bowl…11yr vet when so many of his CB peers of his draft class are getting cut, winfield seems to be getting better

I think we re-sign Winfield he has been outstanding for us. I dont think hes looking for a lot of money, but I think hes worth it. I think you sign him for 3 years.

Have to have a-winn around for a few years to teach the young bucks how to tackle and provide run support!

good point sleeves, part of his value is mentoring!

I think the vikings are going to make a great run for the superbowl. Percy Havin will be the difference maker. defenses wont be able to stack the box no more. with Berrian on one side rice on the other and now Havin in the slot. wow thats awsome. Rice can now play his game, which has always been a possession reciever, and red zone-jump ball reciever. Im not sure about Wade, maybe if we go 4 wides he’ll be in.

Do we really need “inital” talks with the NFL’s all time Sack Leader and our other QB who couldn’t start for Virginia Tech last season? I mean come on. Don’t waste the effort you could be putting into getting guys who are going to help this team win extended.

look for Peterson to have his best year. With the addition of Loadholt. He will open a lot of holes on that right side. I think John Sullivan will do a great job at center. The pass protection will be so much better this year who ever is the QB will be able to stand back there all day. I look to see the Vikes score at least 10 to 14 more points per game then last year.

At the risk of sounding like a homer, I definitely think this teamed is poised to be a strong contender.

IF the O-line can get it figured out with the rookies, IF this team can stay relatively healthy, IF whomever is starting QB can play at LEAST average play, IF Brad can quit being the predictably boring offensive nightmare, IF the secondary can step up the play.

I’m sure I’m missing a few.

Lot of if’s, but yeah…why not…let’s get it done.

many have mentioned the fact that Harvin didn’t know the name of our QB during his interview…….me thinks it goes a little deeper….Brad didn’t talk much about QBs when they talked because of this “competition” stuff, and couldn’t really tell Percy that “the Purple Sage has arrived”…wouldn’t want to hurt TJ’s feelings….hence Percy’s “yeah, great team, there’s Adrian Peterson, there’s the QB, there’s a great defense”, etc etc…..funny stuff!

he didn’t mention the qb names cuz there’s a competition for the position…

on another note, wolfman thinks we’ll average 10-14 more points a game?? then the vikes will average about 36pts per game?? thats a little unheard of in the nfl…and when you look at the Defenses the Vikes will face this year in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, the Giants, our own division Pack twice, bears twice(yeah we’ve put up points against them) it’s highly unlikely to score that many points each week over 17 weeks…just sayign wolfman…maybe 4-6points more…not 14…nice try though

well still 26-28 point avg sounds alright

AFVikeHawaii says:

I still think we should look at Levi Jones when Cincy cuts him for depth…to push the young guys or if they arent ready…if Loadhalt is nove Jones inside….

AFVikeHawaii says:

matty..4-6 could make a HUGE difference! but I agree, if Harvin is worth close to 1 TD a game in those close games we mad ethe right choice. We shall see of course he sint getting 16 TDs this year…but how sweet it would be if he got double digits!!

matty927 says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:20 pm

believe it or not, but last year the vikes averaged roughly 24pts per…so to think about even 4pts more per game would be huge…and I agree AF that it would be a huge difference in close games where one explosive play is the difference in the game.

matty927 says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:25 pm

AF i saw your Levi jones post on the previous thread and yeah it bears interest and it would be intriguing to bring a guy like that in…the Vikes certainly have the cap space for a young guy like that but you can’t give that type of guy big guaranteed money or years cuz you just never know…but if the price is right…why not

Tomb... says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Well, obviously the key is to average more points than your foe.

HOWEVER, is anybody else sick of biting your nails in close games?

Best game of the year was the Cardinal game…complete domination. BRAD needs to come with that killer instinct, to put his foot on the throat of the competition and NEVER let up.

matty927 says:

tomb, the carolina game was really never in question…yeah the score was closer than it should have been…

AFVikeHawaii says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:32 pm

Yeah I completely agree matty..he has been injury proned but if the price is right..I just cant see the downsize in bringing him in..he was a pro-bowler wasnt he? until the rash of injuries?

matty927 says:

April 27th, 2009 at 6:57 pm

he(levi Jones) played in 10games last year, 15 the year before that…I think he’s healthy now…he’s going to be 30 at the start of the season so he’s still an asset in my mind to the bengals…it’ll be interesting to see what they do w/ Jones

AFVikeHawaii says:

April 27th, 2009 at 7:08 pm

ESPN article said they will try and trade/release him..so he wont be released tomorrow..they are fielding calls right now for him

Expect action on Levi Jones.

The interesting pick Saturday was Jacksonville Jaguar selection of Eben Britton. Jaguar had already selected Eugene Monroe and had Jerod Gaithers. So Britton didn’t make any sense.

NE Patriot with two picks behind Jaguar at #40 were probably most surprised. Belichick would have known how to set up an auction for Britton and this might have included Viking and Bill.

Buffalo Bill were at #43 and were criticized after the Draft for not selecting a replacement for Jason Peters.

Jaguar were criticized for not picking up the Wide Receiver. But Robiskie had been selected and Massoquoi was next logical choice. Instead Jaguar chose a 3rd Offensive Tackle. Then they proceeded to pick three receivers you’ve never of in later rounds.

God now if this team only had a Pro Bowl QB we would be looking at playing in the Super Bowl and winning it. This team now has all the pieces in place and the only huge question left is our QB’s. Childress did so good in all the other positions I can’t believe that he wouldn’t do the same with our QB. I hope Sage can prove me wrong cause I know Jackson won’t.
