Bengals make Tahi an offer he can’t refuse

March 20th, 2009 – 9:52 AM by Mark Craig

Vikings restricted free agent fullback Naufahu Tahi has received a one-year, $1.4-million offer from the Cincinnati Bengals. The Vikings have seven days to match the offer, so, tick-tock, boys.

The Vikings gave Tahi the low tender of $1.01 million heading into free agency. The Vikings have been linked to the “Weaver Watch” — the chase for Seattle free agent fullback Leonard Weaver — but the guy’s name has yet to come up inside the walls at Winter Park.

For a mere $390,000 more than they wanted to pay Naufahu, the Vikings could have their Tahi. If they don’t match, the Vikings wouldn’t receive any compensation because Tahi was undrafted.

Update: Our friends at ESPN report Seattle free agent fullback Leonard Weaver has signed with the Eagles.

I say, call Weaver in for an interview ASAP, sign him, and let Tahi go to the Bengals.

That’s a funny way of putting it, Mark. “An off he can’t refuse.” I looked that up in the Urban Dictionary and it says:

Urban Dictionary:
2 definitions - to off someone is to have killed him. … offed. get rid of, throw away, toss, kill.

So, Tahi thinks Bengals have a better shot at Super Bowl than Vikings, huh?

Brother Craig, please ask this Q to chili, can ya?

Go away Tahi, for all I care…he was putrid.

GET WEAVER!!!!!! It seems like such an obvious need to me, that I find it more frustrating than not going after Cutler.

I find it more irritating than Gunslinger finds Mark Craig.

Well, maybe not THAT much, but it is irritating.

Bye bye Tahi, don’t let the door hit you….

kennyrogers says:

I think they are saving up their money for something, Tomb. The latest rumor is they are scouting the Stafford kid from Georgia. He’s supposed to have a better arm than Cutler and is bigger and stronger and he’s not a whiner. It would take money and trades to move up to get him.

Snapit says:

Well, the Vikes are now on the clock so to speak. I hate to say it, but if we can’t land Weaver (and there’s been no indication that we’re one of his finalists), we’d have little choice but to re-sign Tahi. He really is the best option left, provided Weaver doesn’t sign: http://walterfootball.com/freeagents2009FB.php

I still maintain letting Richardson go was a HUGE mistake for us. Another mistake would probably be to wait and see if Weaver signs, lose Tahi and really be stuck. I’d probably wait 6 days while trying pretty hard to get an answer from Weaver’s agent where we stand in his mind before making a decision. If we’re in his top 2, I can see possibly holding out. But this could get pretty crappy real fast.

Tomb... says:

March 20th, 2009 at 10:44 am

I can’t see them getting Stafford, too much expense for an unproven rookie QB. I would HATE if they did that…

Tomb... says:

March 20th, 2009 at 10:46 am

Letting Richardson go was a MONSTER mistake.

I think Weaver is a HUGELY important signing…much more than a WR like Douchemandzadeh.

I think it’s as important as picking up a decent offensive tackle.

Tahi needs to move on to “greener pastures” ???…I’m sure it has nothing to do with the extra $300,000 at all…Weaver would be the man..He finds people to block…

CRAZY HORSE says:

We never should have cut Tapeh, that was a huge mistake….

FIRE CHILDRESS NOW !!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if the Cutler trade comes to a head this weekend at the owners meetings…Cutler may be on his way to a new team come Monday ??…

Bones says:

Richardson can recognize a loser when he sees one. Chili is much happier with his best friend Tahi, who will “put his hat on for ya”…

Snapit says:

March 20th, 2009 at 10:58 am

From Weaver’s POV signing with the Vikes (money excluded):

Positives:
1. lead blocking for the #1 RB in the NFL
2. Dome life isn’t a bad thing

Negatives:
1. He sees himself as a RB also, and he’d see the field rarely in that capacity with AD and CT.

2. Outdoor climate (let’s just be honest)

It’ll likely come down to money, but it may also depend on if he sees himself as a blocker or a blocker/running back.

Here’s an article about Peterson and running with/without a FB: http://min.scout.com/2/806625.html

Gee I’m really gonna miss Tahi. Come on guys - get Weaver and get it over with. He might actually go FORWARD after catching a 2 yard pass . . .

GunslingerCA says:

March 20th, 2009 at 11:35 am

Man, the insults are coming fast and furious while I had to actually work. But, I guess somebody has to keep this blog going. Aside from such titilating updates as Tahi and the wrong Holt.

Tahi leaving is the only way Childress stops calling that stupid zero yard out pattern to our fullback. Well, aside from benching TJack. Tahi was not drafted. He should be chasing every dollar while he can.

Just put Kleinsasser in as fullback to be the lead blocker. Done and done.

neilwpg says:

March 20th, 2009 at 11:36 am

Could the Vikes not draft a fullback? Its not like Tahi was so good he is impossible to replace.

reallydumbasian says:

March 20th, 2009 at 11:37 am

Lets move Jimmy K to fullback, problem solved.

matty927 says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:16 pm

the vikings are so close to a championship…just look at what all the free agents that have joined the vikes the past couple years have said…wow…maybe this year?

GunslingerCA says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:20 pm

If Philly and the Cardinals can make the NFC Championship game, I’m feeling better about the Vikings.

It felt like an off year last year, and the Vikings won the division. It also felt like a very quiet 1,700 yards for AP. If Sage “wins” the QB competition and remains the starter for the whole year, I feel like this team will be very stable and go deep in the playoffs.

Tomb says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:26 pm

That’s a beautiful thought my gunslinging friend…I think a lot of it comes down to how injury-free we can stay this year…last year was pretty nasty that way.

I think if our secondary can improve from last year, our D can be pretty dominant.

Shore up the O-line, and if Sage is ANY good, it could be a pretty good year for the purple.

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:36 pm

Matty: You don’t seriously take what signed FAs have to say about their new club as gospel, do you? I’m pretty sure they all say the standard line about being close to winning a championship.

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:42 pm

Stephen King’s “Gunslinger” books are pretty darn good…

tice09 says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:49 pm

ya i’m sure sage can throw just as many picks as t joke. i’m usually high on vikes but these last couple years have been so disappointing when its been clear t joke couldn’t cut it and we are supposed to have a qb guru as coach yet that postion is the weakest on the team. its time ziggy wakes up and fires his a– and we get a decent coach and qb

Snapit says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:56 pm

ESPN is reporting…

The Eagles have reportedly agreed to terms with FB Leonard Weaver on a one-year, $1.75 million contract.

This isn’t the big money Weaver was waiting on, but the it’s the right fit. The Eagles have been desperate for a fullback for over a year now, and Weaver’s short-yardage ability fills a glaring need in the Philly backfield.

Snapit says:

March 20th, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Unfortunately we need to match Cincy’s offer now. We don’t have much choice (we won’t put Jimmy K. at FB).

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Chili must have mixed feelings about this news. On one hand he loses out on yet another free agent, but on the other he certainly must be happy for his best friends Andy Reid and Donovan McNabb!

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:02 pm

Are there any fullbacks on the Eagles’ practice squad?

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:08 pm

Why do you have to be so damn negative?

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:14 pm

Obviously at this point Tahi will be matched by the Vikes. Fred’s wondering who was the backup full back last year? Dugans? Mills?

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Fred agrees with his old pal Guns. Assuming Sage starts game 1 and remains healthy, the Vikes will be just fines.

Viking John says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:16 pm

Tahi will be back. Chilly will proclaim him as the FA signing of the year. Tahi is to Chilly as Alfred Anderson was to Jerry Burns. Only the coach thought they were starting NFL FB’s.

Go Vikes

akvikesfan says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:18 pm

Freds, Dugan was the primary backup. They should’ve chased Weaver much harder. If those #’s are correct then that’s a steal for Weaver! I think Weaver is worth the $400,000 more than what we now have to pay to keep Tahi.

Argh.

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:19 pm

But Tahi will “put his hat on you”! We don’t know if Weaver can do the same…

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:21 pm

Tahi also has a bit of “wiggle to him”.

akvikesfan says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:22 pm

Rumors from the Philly Inquirer are that there is a three-way trade happening with Skins, Chiefs, and Broncos involving Cassell, Cutler, and Jason Campbell. Weird.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

AKs,

The Broncos or Chiefs want Campbell? Why? Dude always starts fast and is done by mid year.

akvikesfan says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:28 pm

Freds couldn’t tell ya… that’s just the rumor.

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:41 pm

Campbell = Trent Dilfer

Boring…

kennyrogers says:

March 20th, 2009 at 1:56 pm

Right, that trade stinks.
More big news from the NFL. Chad Johnson can officially change his name to Ocho Cinco, even on his jersey. Vikes need to do the same. Here’s the Norwegian names for Phat and Jared’s numbers:

Pat Williams= Nittifire
Jared Allen= Sekstini

(ok that was dumb)

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 2:01 pm

Based on his play this past season, Ocho Cinco should worry more about his performance on the field…

Bones says:

March 20th, 2009 at 2:03 pm

Friends at ESPN = Seifert?

GunslingerCA says:

March 20th, 2009 at 2:08 pm

Stephen King is my favorite author. “The Stand” is also a great book, right behind “The Dark Tower (Gunslinger)” series.

I like Tahi…until he touches the ball.

“Quarterback Guru” is a myth. I say we put it to rest, along with “KAO”.

What’s Spanish for “Past his prime?”

Well, time to go do some work in the field. But you know me, I have no life either, so I’ll check back later in case the Vikings decide to sign a backup long snapper.
