Never a dull moment

March 16th, 2009 – 3:18 PM by Judd Zulgad

The trade speculation surrounding Denver quarterback Jay Cutler will serve as manna for fans in many NFL cities — not to mention talk radio hosts, sportswriters and (most important) bloggers.

This is what could be considered a quiet period of the offseason. The first phase of free agency is finished and the draft isn’t until the weekend of April 25. So what better time to speculate on the availability of a 25-year-old quarterback who could prove to be the long-term answer for a team looking for stability at the starting spot?

Vikings fans are far from the only group that have pounced on the Cutler discussion. A co-worker who just returned from Tampa said the sports radio station in that city was abuzz with talk of Cutler ending up with the Buccaneers. And this comes during spring training in a city where the Major League team went to the World Series last season.

Our NFL writer, Mark Craig, posted an item on his blog this afternoon on the Lions’ potential pursuit of Cutler and we wrote last night that the Denver Post speculated Cutler’s top choices might be Tennessee and Chicago. Alex Marvez has weighed in on the situation and has a list of six potential landing spots for Cutler. Interestingly, Marvez does not include the Vikings.

However, we’re guessing there will be another list very soon that will have Minnesota front and center. Just give it some time.
