With the first wave of free agency having finished, the Vikings could be looking for some bargains this week as a long list of unemployed players continue to search for jobs. The Vikings have yet to sign a player from outside their organization.
The Vikings are trying to bring in Denver free-agent cornerback Karl Paymah but they had to get in line. Paymah, who also would be a valuable addition on special teams, visited the Baltimore Ravens last week, was in Tampa Bay on Sunday and is scheduled to be in Cleveland today. If the Vikings don’t get Paymah, it will be interesting to see if they bring back Benny Sapp. Sapp also is a free agent and took over in the nickel defense after Charles Gordon was injured last season. Gordon is expected to be ready for training camp and will compete for that job.
Meanwhile, vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman is expected to hit the road to attend the Pro Days of draft prospects at various college campuses around the country. Keep in mind, there are players who don’t go through all the workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine because they prefer to do the drills on their own campus.
