Birk to make visit

March 3rd, 2009 – 9:21 AM by Judd Zulgad

Center Matt Birk will make his first free-agent visit today and indications are it will be to meet with the Baltimore Ravens. That would make sense given that the Ravens lost center Jason Brown to the St. Louis Rams early in the free agency period. Birk has been with the Vikings since the 1998 season and coach Brad Childress has expressed a desire to keep the six-time Pro Bowl center in Minnesota.

Meanwhile, free-agent linebacker Heath Farwell also is making a free-agent visit today. He will be meeting with the New England Patriots.

The Vikings have kept one of their own free agents already, signing tight end Jim Kleinsasser to a three-year, $9 million contract last weekend.

UPDATE: The Vikings have released backup linebacker/special teams player Vinny Ciurciu. Ciurciu played in 15 games last season primarily on special teams.
