No word yet on if T.J. Houshmandzadeh has made up his mind yet about whether to play for the Vikings, Seattle or Cincinnati. As we reported in today’s story, all indications are that the Bengals have the best offer on the table. That doesn’t mean the Vikings or Seahawks could not up their offer in order to try to get the top-free agent wide receiver on the market.
If the Vikings don’t get him, it will be interesting to see what they elect to do in free agency. The two moves they’ve made so far were to trade for quarterback Sage Rosenfels and re-sign tight end Jim Kleinsasser to a three-year, $9 million contract. One situation to keep an eye on is what happens with center Matt Birk. If Houshmandzadeh doesn’t come to Minnesota, that would seemingly leave plenty of money to match any offer Birk receives. It’s expected Birk is going to start making some free-agent visits in the next few days.
We’ve also received word the Vikings have some interest in Packers free agent right tackle Mark Tauscher. Check out this item from the Wisconsin State Journal. Vikings coach Brad Childress is familiar with Tauscher, having been on the Wisconsin coaching staff during a portion of the time Tauscher played for the Badgers. Tauscher is recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee.
