What’s up with T.J.?

March 1st, 2009 – 12:59 PM by Judd Zulgad

We know all of you who are checking Access Vikings today — and we do appreciate it — likely care about one thing and one thing only. Where do things stand with wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh?

The free agent remains inside Winter Park as the Vikings continue their push to sign him before he leaves town. All indications are that the Vikings, Seahawks and Bengals are in the running for Houshmandzadeh. However, the reality of free agency is this: Once a player leaves the facility of a team which he is visiting that’s often it. That means the Seahawks might be in trouble.

All indications are that the Vikings are extremely confident they can get something done. The receiver said in a text message to the Cincinnati Enquirer on Saturday that he wanted to make a decision by tonight and it’s likely it will come down to the Vikings and Bengals.

Given the treatment Houshmandzadeh has been getting from the Vikings — a private plane ride to Minnesota, dinner at Manny’s Steakhouse, etc. — I like the Vikings chances. Today’s most important steps will be for Houshmandzadeh’s agent, Kennard McGuire, to negotiate a contract with the Vikings (it wouldn’t be surprising if the framework has been set) and for Houshmandzadeh to like what he has heard from coaches and executives about what his role would be in this offense.

If all goes well in those areas, Houshmandzadeh could be wearing a Purple jersey at a news conference as early as Monday. Stay tuned.

Wine, dine, and spend some dime. Don’t let him leave WP w/out a signed contract.

i wonder what it would be like to be a top tier FA and get my butt kissed by billionaire owners and entire team staff??? has to be insane for a guy like tj or probably birk for that matter considering its never happened to them before like this!

Why do they always take free agents to Manny’s? Shows a lack of creativity, as if Bevell is calling the dinner plans.

Judd, whats up with John Clayton of ESPN saying Housh has decided to sign with Seattle? He is still here and negotiating from what I hear, is that correct?

The longer he is inside the more I like the Viking’s chances. I know I’ve said this before but this is so much like Berrian from last year. If TJ signs with the Vikes, then that must be one smooth ride of a plane that Zygi has because once your in his plane, it’s all over.

Torgo = Dorko

If I was Mr. Wilf, I would spend as little as possible on FA.

Why should he spend money, when you (the residents of the State of Minnesota) are making is clear to him that you will not support a new stadium.

Mr. Wilf deserve a return on his investment.

“If you build it, they will come” is a fantasy in a baseball movie. It will not work with the political knuckleheads in St. Paul

zygi must have that erotic hypnotist guy on all his plane rides for players!

the vikings will get a stadium. just not today! and it will be in minnesota! costs alot more to bring an expansion team here so its entirely more cost effective to build the stadium.

I was just reading in rotoworld Virginia OT Eugene Monroe will reportedly be red flagged after he was discovered to have “knee issues” at the NFL Combine.

Don’t know how bad his knee is, but maybe he drops all the way to 22

Dear Vikingj.. I understand what your saying.. But Mr. Wilf has an investment in the team.. He also as a business man has to put the most marketable product on the field. If you were a home owner would you refuse to fix your roof until the City repaved the street outside your house..No.. If you ever wanted to re-sell your house you wouldnt get much of a return on your investment with a leaky roof..Wilf needs to put the most marketable product on the field. And as long as he is not so expensive as to handicap the team, Housh will only make us better…. Sorry about the silly analogys.. By Grandma always used to use analogys and I guess it rubbed off…

Sweet, eastcoastsportsnews.com just reported the Packers DT Colin Cole has signed with the Seahawks and Lions QB Orlovsky signed with the Texans.

I love when our division rivals lose players, especially young players who have a chance to develop into something special

Signing Houshmandzadeh is related to a new Stadium deal. Coaches have told the owners TJ will contribute to winning seasons and playoff games

The ownership group also has to consider TJ a draw to maintain season ticket sales and Dome sellouts.

Some commentators content the Wilfs’ have acted like George Steinbrenner the way they have spent money on Jared Allen and Bertrand Berrian. Not so. These signings are not about star power. Vike manage around the salary cap and the spending reflects it.

If you avoid $ 14.7M contracts buying Cassel you can afford to look after other positional needs. Winning will bring the Wilfs closer to the ultimate Stadium prize. And winning will also build support for a stadium solution with better revenues for the Wilfs in the longer term

This is good club management.

Anyone else having fantasies (football, not erotic) about a Jay Cutler trade? He seems to be on the block, he’s three years versed in Shanahan’s West Coast Offense, and the Broncos seem to investigating runningbacks. I say our first and Chester T. for Cutler. No disrespect to Chester…he’s stud and a great Viking.

fuzznuttz says:

There is no way the Broncos trade Cutler now that Cassel is gone. Cutler is pissed, no doubt, but he’s not going any where.

Free agent T.J. Houshmandzadeh reiterated via text message to the Cincinnati Enquirer that he expects to sign with a team by tonight.
Housh, who’s still in Minnesota and presumably negotiating a contract, is targeting “Sunday evening” to announce his new home. The Bengals have an offer on the table. Houshmandzadeh made his first visit to Seattle and could still meet with Tampa Bay or Philadelphia early this week if he stays unsigned.
Source: Cincinnati Enquirer

I found this on Rotoworld.com and was just posted in the last 10-15 minutes. It’s strange because it say TJH will announce his “new home” even though the Bengals still have an offer on the table and it also says that he expects to announce his choice by tonight however could still meet with Tampa Bay or Philidelphia if he remains unsigned. Too much conflicting info in this. I bet TJH’s camp is putting this out to get a better bargaining angle.

There is too much conflicting stuff being reported on TJ right now. Makes me wonder, like you implied, if his camp isn’t sending this stuff out there to pressure the Vikes to meet their price now or he will move on

Check out the wikepedia link. Says TJ plays for the Vikes and is number 88

All we can do now is cross our fingers and wait. I have faith in Mr. Wilf though, and I think we might get TJH.
