Vikings entertain Houshmandzadeh

February 28th, 2009 – 9:34 PM by Chip Scoggins

We have confirmed that T.J. Houshmandzadeh is in town and is having dinner with a contingent of Vikings officials in a private room at an upscale downtown restaurant, according to sources/spies.

Sounds like the team is putting the full-court press on Houshmandzadeh.

Also, it sounds like free agent center Matt Birk is prepared to take a few visits this week. Not sure which teams yet, but indications are he may visit a few teams. It’s possible the Vikings could be willing to match any offer.

So was it Judd or Chip that was undercover?

GunslingerCA says:

Well, Judd gets his haircut at the airport, so he pulled transportation duty. Chip must be doing “waiter” duty.

Spend the money saved on Birk and sign the WR.

GunslingerCA says:

I still say if Housh was only looking for the most money, he would not have named certain team. I also said he is certainly looking for a lot of money, but he would have to keep the tour moving for a couple weeks to hear all the options available. Again, he is looking for the most money with a few certain teams. The Vikings would be one of them.

Sign Birk already. We have the cap space, he is a good center, good character guy, and heck he even has his own hamburger here. We’ll take TJ too, and I mean Whosamawhachacallhim not the third string QB.

Also, I would love to hear Paul Allen go nuts when he cactes a TD and have to say Houmandzadeh real fast.

Cutler throwing to Houshmandzadeh and Berrian would have looked good.

Is it possible that we get a deal done tonight yet or how soon could that happen?

It is possible that there could be a verbal commitement tonight, but nothing would be signed until tommorow for sure. Even if there is a verbal commitement tonight we probably wouldn;t here about it until tommorow.

Take Whosamawhachacallhim to Murrays for the Silver Butterknife steak and sign him. He can start working out with Bernard and Sage Monday morning.

AnotherBlondeViking says:

As I said previously, let’s do it, Zygi!! Don’t let him get back in your plane without a signed contract and a purple jersey!

IowaViking says:

Don’t let the guy leave.

briano29 says:

Send Allen and Peterson to talk to him.
Don’t let him go to Tampa or he’ll be gone for sure.

IowaViking says:

Correct. If he leaves he won’t be a Viking.

Good thinking, Kenny. You really can’t get that same beef flavor in a steak on the West Coast (outside of Morton’s). And these high maintenance athletes eat nothing but chicken, chicken and more chicken. Revolting when you think about it.

even better, have Vern Gagne put his famous sleeper hold on TJ
Wonder if Vern can still do that move while wearing handcuffs

Bronco coach Josh McDaniel trying to swing a trade for Jay Cutler. Shocking.

If Cutler’s been in circulation awhile surely he was offered to the Vike. For what compensation?

Today’s other amazing story was Cassel and Vrabel for a 2nd rounder. Suggests Cassel would have been offered straight up to Vike for our 1st. Remember Kubiak last year was demanding a mid-round 2nd for Rosenfels. A 2nd round is normally standard compensation for a back up QB but this was much hyped Matt Cassel

KC Chief 2nd rounder is #34 pick (worth about 550 draft points) but this isn’t considered excessive relative to his QB ranking. Vrabel was a throw in (although consider him overrated)

Still think Rosenfels for a fourth was highway robbery but these others are NFL’s elite guys.

Lost Viking says:

March 1st, 2009 at 12:24 am

Say, I remember Gagne’s famous sleeper hold. Practised that on Gene Kiniski a few times.

Handcuffs would work great with that hold…if he could only remember where he put them

Anybody hear something about the Vikes possibly being involved in the 3-way trade that went sour involving Cassel & Cutler? We were going to get Cutler and the Pats would get our picks. Can’t find too much on it yet. Gotta go rewing sportscenter and hear Michael Smith.

Yea there is a lil bit about it.. I don’t remember where I read it, but it was us geting Jcut, Broncs gettin cassel and pats getting our 2nd and 5th or something.. Broncos didn’t want it tho.. They were close to accepting but didn’t. Then Jcut heard that he was in trade talking and he got super pissed at management so its crazy over in Denver at the moment. jcut had no idea about it but it almost went down

BIGVIKING says:

Now that the Chiefs are emptying the bank on Cassel maybe they would be willing to part with Thigpen?

If Cutler is T.O.’d at management…maybe they would be in the mood for our First Round Pick for Cutler?

If we were really that close to getting Cutler for that little… I don’t even want to think about it.

From S.I.

T.J. Houshmandzadeh, WR, Bengals: The underappreciated playmaker is a polished route runner with outstanding hands. He’s at his best when working as a slot receiver, and his consistent production since stepping into the starting lineup has led many to view him as a potential No. 1 receiver in the right system. Detractors question whether he can duplicate his success without wideout Chad Johnson at his side, Houshmandzadeh has proven the naysayers wrong throughout his career.

Lost Viking says:

March 1st, 2009 at 1:48 am

Links between Houshmandzadeh and Viking mainly on defensive side:

Leslie Frazier - D. Coordinator w/ Bengal 2003 and 2004
Madieu Williams - Bengal 2003 - 07
Terry Gray - Regional Scout played same Oregon State U teams.

Others?

It’s 7:22 AM and no update? Get someone over to winter park! Now!

I have to go to Haz Mat class and when I get back this guy better be signed.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

Lost,

The only “link” TJ Housh is looking for is the link to George Washingtons. Prove that you are the team that will provide the most links to old green George, and he’s yours.

That my friends is the name of the game!

Let’s not kid ourselves that these guys come here because of the great playing facilities, fans, the bass in lake minnetonka or the great new QB. They only have a few years to make as much money as they can before the are done with football. If Seattle pays out more, you will hear how much the player loves rain, Hasselback and microsoft. If Philly wins you’ll hear how much the player loves, cracked bells, ignorant fans and cheese steak. If the player picks Green Bay, you’ll hear the player say how much he loves, alcohol, ugly pock faced women and pot bellied smelly men. But in all cases you will hear how the city where they signed was always their first choice.

Just open the checkbook and let’s hear how TJ Housh loves Adrian, long freezing winters, salt on the street, ice fishing and the fact that this is where he has the best chance of winning a superbowl. After all he will say, that is why he plays the game, to win the superbowl. Right after he gets the most money!!

We’ll see how much TJ (Houshamazilla) will back up his words by wanting to come to the Vikings. If he really wanted to play for the Vikes then not getting his $10 mil a year target price won’t be an issue. If it is, then it’s all about the benjamins and the Vikes bare better off not signing him. GET BIRK BACK HERE!!!!!!

so did he leave town? isnt he supposed to visit other teams? i havent seen anywhere that he is on his way out of town yet.

norseman66 says:

March 1st, 2009 at 9:56 am

I read that his visiting Tampa Bay was incorrect and the only other place he might visit would be the Giants since he seems to have burned his bridges with the Eagle.

norseman66 says:

March 1st, 2009 at 10:01 am

This reminds be a lot like last year when they brought in Bernard Berrian. It took them a while to get all the details worked out also. As long as he didn’t leave yet is still a positive sign I guess. You knew things would not be going good if a taxi showed up outside Winter Park and he flipped of everyone while he was getting in the taxi.

AnotherBlondeViking says:

March 1st, 2009 at 10:20 am

Any Limos at Winter Park? Did Zygi’s plane leave? Breakfast catered in? Like Norse, I’m hoping no news is good news!

55 plays a game, 30 runs and 25 passes, Sage completes 16 to 4 WRs and 2 RBs and 2 TEs…..not exactly great potential for stats….about the same in NY….that’s why it’s more about the money…this contract should be TJH’s retirement fund…..don’t think playing at the Gophers’ stadium for a year or two instead of new Giants’ stadium would even be on TJ’s mind right now…

Go Vikes!

[…] But apparently Houshmandzadeh is still in Minneapolis. He arrived yesterday after having visited with the Seattle Seahawks, and got the usual trip to dinner with the Vikings’ higher muckety mucks. I can only assume this included Zygi Wilf, Brad Childress, Darrell Bevell, a few players, and the proverbial cast of thousands. […]
