Birk, Kleinsasser to become free agents

February 26th, 2009 – 9:57 PM by Judd Zulgad

It’s no surprise but longtime Vikings Matt Birk and Jim Kleinsasser did not come to terms on contracts and will become free agents at 11:01 tonight. The Vikings had conducted talks with reps for both players and those discussions could continue.

But in the meantime Birk and Kleinsasser can begin making visits and talking to other teams. Birk, a center, has been with the Vikings since 1998 but had no physical issues this past season and will be in line for a multi-year deal somewhere. Kleinsasser is a premier blocker and also is sure to draw interest.

If Birk does leave it will be interesting to see how the Vikings address the need at center. John Sullivan will be entering his second NFL season but it’s not clear if the Vikings feel he could take over the starting spot. One name that came off the market was veteran center Jeff Saturday, who re-signed with Indianapolis tonight.

Not good. I thought we could have signed these two and this would have helped the team. I guess we will see what happens? As long as Birk doesn’t wear pucker green, good look Matty.

That’s an idea, Cliff, but I don’t think it would bankrupt the Vikings to re-sign these two local boys. And I also don’t think it would kill Matty and Jimmy to sign for less for the privelege of playing for the Vikings and in front of their friends and relatives, who I happen to know! ! !

[…] The Vikings failed to reach agreement with either Matt Birk or Jim Kleinsasser before 11 PM Thursday night, meaning both long-time Purple stalwarts will hit the market.  It would be sort of a shock to go into the season with both Matty and Jimmy in other uniforms, but that’s the way of the sporting world nowadays.  The only potential destination suggested for either man so far has been Jacksonville, for Kleinsasser.  Of course it’s still perfectly possible that neither guy will get much of a sniff and the Vikes will end up bringing them back.
