Frerotte: I would have given us the best chance

January 5th, 2009 – 9:52 PM by Judd Zulgad

Want to know how Gus Frerotte felt as he watched Tarvaris Jackson struggle in the Vikings playoff loss to Philadelphia on Sunday? All you need to do is read this piece by Michael Silver of Yahoo! This isn’t the first time in recent weeks that Silver has gotten some good stuff from Frerotte, the two are good friends, but the point is Frerotte is speaking the truth and it’s pretty interesting.

“I just don’t know what to think right now,” Frerotte told Silver on Sunday night. “It was a very frustrating experience, because I felt like I should’ve been the one playing. That might sound selfish, but I think I would’ve given us the best chance to win. I’m going home to St. Louis [on Monday] to be with my family and figure out where things stand, but the way things played out at the end really makes me question things.”

Frerotte has a two-year contract with the Vikings but given his frustration level right now it’s a safe bet that he isn’t coming back. There’s a few pretty interesting nuggets from some unidentified Vikings. Included is one player who told Silver that late in the game “our sideline was in total disarray.”

Well, he did win some games but takes more sacks and throws way more pics and has no mobility so is that an upgrade?

We have 3 backups and need a starter.

My son who is a high school coach in Oregon thinks that Gus might have given us a better chance to win, I think mentally but physically Gus has slowed way down, he is a step slow I don’t know. What I’d like to see is the Vikings draft a QB with NFL skills(Long ball) or pick one up free agent, and get a Head coach that can lead us to the promise land…You can have all the talent in the world if you don’t have the coaching staff you will never win, but you could say a great coaching staff at times can makes up the difference in talent.

Gus - the boy tries hard and surely has a better head on his shoulders than jackson; but not too good with the wheels.

the viking gameplanners setup their QBs to fail with vanilla/predictable schemes with no outlet receivers should the QB be under heat.

many have said, tom brady could not survive in the purple system - lousy offensive schemes 101.

things must change.

I believe that is correct. I’ve seen more missed play calls from this staff than I can remember..I just can’t relive the bullsh*t anymore..Thank god for the spring and summer to get over the the idiots that keep running our Viking team into the ground…..I guess we are easy pickings because we are small market. I think that Ziggy should have some pride and demand excellence out of his management team!!!!!

booty comes from the college offense that would make you think could thrive in viking land.
not sure how much game the lad has.
too early to tell.
perhaps in time if willing to give him a chance. dunno

yep those calling the shots need to be
……….re-evaluated . . . . . .

Fan since 68 says:

Booty may have some talent but, Chilli thinks TJ has talent doesn’t bode well for the home team. Head Coach has the power to analyze talent and BC is deficient in that department.

kennyrogers says:

January 5th, 2009 at 10:51 pm

I’m not surprised to hear our sideline was in total disarray. I AM surprised that Gus thinks he would have given us the best chance to win. Every analysis I have heard said AD should have touched the ball more than eight times the second half. That may have given us the best chance, I don’t know.

fansince1961 says:

January 5th, 2009 at 10:57 pm

still say they have to get AD some passes out of the backfield several times a game and let him run wild.
best player on the team to have him on the bench at critical times doesn’t make sense.
gotta multi-dimension that lad and open up the damn playbook !!!!!!

Fan since 68 says:

January 5th, 2009 at 10:59 pm

3rd down calls were horrible from the side lines, didn’t give us a chance to give the ball to anybody…..6 straight 3 and outs?????? 3rd and 2, 3rd and 1 with a supposedly athletic QB. JC the defense was played out by the 4th, and Ziggy is not going to sh*t can that bunch…..I guess that’s why our economy is in the toilet with people like Ziggy with all the money and no savvy.

kennyrogers says:

January 5th, 2009 at 11:02 pm

Some say he can’t pick up the blitz. Some say he is a fumbler. But what he CAN do and has done many times in the past, more than makes up for all that.

kennyrogers says:

January 5th, 2009 at 11:04 pm

Oops, sorry ‘68. I was talking about Peterson.

Fan since 68 says:

I’m a AD fan all the way. I think he will beat the fumble problem but may not stick it out with the Vikes if we don’t continue to progress. He doesn’t have the tolerance of Sweetness

fansince1961 says:

January 5th, 2009 at 11:12 pm

yep
AD can break it at anytime.
gotta have him in the game somehow especially at critical time.

He had won games for us and WAS the reason we made the playoffs! It was a tough choice to sit tjack again after he played well at the end though…………… We need a new coach and a new QB, but a STARTER, i would like to keep Gus for next year for our back up though………….

Lost Viking says:

January 5th, 2009 at 11:20 pm

Not Jimmy Johnson’s biggest fan - I think that position is taken - but have to give him credit. In his pre-game comment on Fox he said Minnesota was the worst blitz pick up team in the NFL. (There’s a stat on this?).

He guessed the Philly D was going to blitz T-Jax all game. In fact they blitzed something like 16 of 62 plays. First half a lot of run blitzes. Second half pass blitzing that completely befuddled T-Jax.

So, Gus on any experienced QB might have stood a better chance of moving the ball. But root problem is poor performance on blitz pickup.

Lost Viking says:

January 5th, 2009 at 11:31 pm

Viking couldn’t seem to execute on a number of 2nd half offensive plays to exploit Philly blitz attack.
. AD trying to block Philly LB at Viking 10 yard line.
. Screen pass worked to Kleinsasser (new innovation)
. Overthrown/missed screens to AD
. Hurried, missed throws to Shiancoe

Poor second half O performance by T-Jax and Viking. Especially bad when we fell behind and had to throw the ball.

Kenny and a few more of us felt at halftime the Vike would be able to use ball control to run over the Eagle D. Instead 6 of 7 three and outs.

And performance by Matt Birk (one of my favorites) and the backs on blitz pick up needs to assessed.

swardson76 says:

January 6th, 2009 at 1:41 am

Gus isn’t mobile? Funny that T Jack didn’t scramble at all except for one play. As far as throwing from the pocket under pressure, I’d take Gus any day. T jack was LOST. We needed a solid, experienced player. 2-3…or 8-3…you do the math. Gus wouldn’t have totally embarrassed us. And, yes, the play calling was garbage. Offensive coaches should stick to playing Madden.

Frerotte is simply a real QB while T Jack does not seem to have the mental faculties which would allow him to run an NFL offense. Gus may not be good, but he is better than raising a white flag of surrender in the second half by sticking with Jackson. I can’t see either being QB next year, if we don’t get someone in free agency or trade, Childress and his staff should be fired on the spot.

orlandovike says:

January 6th, 2009 at 4:27 am

Sideline in dissarray? That is no suprise and is the fault of Childress, he is a very poor coach that has and continues to alienate the fans. What a shame that we are stuck with him. I cannot see us ever winning with Childress at the helm. I cannot understand how Wilf can support him.

aaronb says:

January 6th, 2009 at 4:38 am

I guess according to stats, Gus was about the same as Jackson. My only thing is that Gus had more games this year, so in terms of reps, it’s not really fair to compare stats. Gus was 8-3 as starter. Jackson was 2-4 as starter (not including Lions game). I thought Jackson handled himself well until the second half. Having said all of this, I’ve always been a Gus fan. He’s old, and somehow when he throws those long bombs, you just want to start yelling Rudy, Rudy!

Chili always drives away talent.

fansince1961 says:

still do not understand the zygi quote
“Just very excited about the team and it’s future and the direction that we’re headed.”

come on baby
since 2000 the team has been stuck in neutral.

Ed Sharockman says:

That should have been Gus’ game - he got us to the playoffs.

It’s obvious that the Pro game is beyond T-Jack capabilities. He’s reached his ceiling (if you can call it that). Chili needs to swallow his pride and scrap the T-Jack experiment… it has now officially failed.

We have about a 2-3 year window with the current roster. They need to go after a veteran QB, like Sage Rosenfels. See if Houston will take a 3rd rounder again, if not, give them the 2nd rounder. Sure would have liked to see him under center this year.

kennyrogers says:

January 6th, 2009 at 8:14 am

Yep Sage looked pretty good against us when Texan’s starter got injured because Jared Allen kept hitting and kicking him and throwing him around and jumping on him and got fined for it. I hate to give up draft choices but he might me the only decent QB available.

fansince1961 says:

January 6th, 2009 at 8:52 am

Ed
agree with that 2-3 year window.
AD - healthy, defense is fairly sound
gotta make stuff happen now
someone call ZYGs and say WAKE UP !!!

Coin Toss says:

Sage Rosenfels? Huh? If we’re going to get a QB lets get a GOOD QB.

Coin Toss says:

January 6th, 2009 at 9:07 am

Of course a semi-trained monkey would be better than Jackson at QB.

Coin Toss says:

January 6th, 2009 at 9:09 am

Of course Frerotte will now be cut for speaking the truth.

kennyrogers says:

January 6th, 2009 at 9:22 am

Agree, Toss. Gus is a goner. But he’ll be picked up by somebody and so would TJack if he was cut. No real good QB’s available.

Coin Toss says:

January 6th, 2009 at 9:22 am

Chilldress showed the NFL how great a coach he is at the end of the 1st half. Ball at our 0wn 16 about 40 seconds to go, worst starting QB ever in the NFL, worst punt coverage team in the NFL, runs on 1st down. I’m thinking maybe there is hope for Chilli yet. 2nd down throws a 3 yard incomplete pass(Now Im cussing loudly at our moron coach. Then on 3rd decides to run again. What an idiot. We are lucky that the Eagles didn’t score points at the end of the 1st halr. I’ve seen better decision making at the peewee football level.

Nice post there,

Why are we still employing our current special teams coach? Is he zygi’s nephew or somebody Ms Chilli used to babysit?

cheets says:

January 6th, 2009 at 9:35 am

Best part of the whole article (even the players know Chili is a bad coach):

Meanwhile Childress, the Eagles’ offensive coordinator before taking the Minnesota job at the end of the ‘05 season, got totally schooled by Philly defensive coordinator Jim Johnson, who made it look, said one Viking, “as though we were one play behind all day.”

chappydotcom says:

January 6th, 2009 at 9:54 am

What about David Carr? Former #1 that was stuck in Houston when they didn’t have any O-Line at all (led the league in sacks). He didn’t look so bad against the Vikes last week. I believe he only signed a one year deal to backup Eli, so I’m sure we would welcome a chance to compete for our starting job against T-Jack.

dakotababcock says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:06 am

Gus is frustrated, because TJ sucked. But really he almost cost us two games against the LIONS. Does he ever give you the best chance to win?

Don’t think that’s bad? In 6 quarters the Vikings under Gus managed to triple the Lion’s INT total for the year, and only mustered 13 points against a team that averaged giving up 32+ a game. (Second worst scoring D ALL-TIME!!)

Arguing about Gus v. TJ is like arguing about which venereal disease is better.

The only truth is that BC mis-managed the QB position for three years, running.

Coin Toss says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:17 am

Having a different head coach would give us a really better chance to win.

cheets says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:21 am

Carr would be a good option, the talent and ability to make the throws are there. I still think the best way to upgrade at QB is to upgrade the offensive line. I saw one mock draft that had the Vikings taking offensive tackles in both the first and second rounds - which probably isn’t very likely. Jordan Gross would shore up this line considerably.

I think you have to look at why New England is successful, and its not because they have great QBs, its because they have a great system, great offensive lines, and very good WRs. I think any QB in the NFL would thrive as the Patriots QB right now. You’re not going to convince me that a QB taken 6th and 7th rounds are the most talented or best QBs, but are the luckiest to be playing in such a great system. Its not that hard to sit back in the pocket for 7-8 seconds and wait for Moss or Welker to get open.

Vikings to do list: (remember they are around $20 mil under the cap)

Sign Jordan Gross
Sign TJ Houshmanzadeh
Sign David Carr or
Draft QB round 1 (Mark Sanchez, Matt Stafford, Sam Bradford - one of them should fall to the 20s)
Draft DT round 2 (start grooming Pat’s replacement - Sen’Derrick Marks?) or WR with KR/PR ability (Percy Harvin? - Remember Desean Jackson was predicted to go mid first and fell to mid second round)
Draft RB round 3 (start grooming Taylor’s replacement - Javon Ringer/Shonn Green?)

Obviously a lot would have to fall the right way, but adding these pieces would be doable seeing how aggressive the vikings were last offseason.

Coin Toss says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:36 am

Tom Brady isn’t a great QB?? Huh? I do agree though with Gross and TJ. I’d just as soon see us trade our draft picks for PROVEN players. the draft is a crap shoot.

Coin Toss says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:38 am

All those positive things that were said about Johnson at safety were a bunch of bull. He missed tackles, took bad angles sveveral times that I saw. He did nothing in pass coverage ala: Cedric Griffin and McCauley.

kennyrogers says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:48 am

I like Sam Bradford, from AD’s school, but he’s a red-shirt sophomore and Heisman trophy winner. That would mean big money if he enters the draft.

cheets says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:52 am

“Tom Brady isn’t a great QB??”

Sorry. He is a great QB now, but I was unclear trying to make my point that he fell into a great situation. I think most (not all) QBs put into his situation would thrive and become very good or great QBs - see Matt Cassell, a player who has not started a game at QB since High School and is able to step in and be very, very successful and lead a team to an 11-5 record.

kennyrogers says:

January 6th, 2009 at 11:08 am

Right, Cheats. Cassel stepped into a great situation at New England but I still think they should have re-united Culpepper and Moss, LOL!

GunslingerCA says:

January 6th, 2009 at 11:19 am

Rosenfels? Carr? Jackson? Ferotte? A really old Favre?

OMG, these are the choices and ideas for the future? I’m starting to weep for my favorite franchise.

rakidd says:

January 6th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Like most Vikings fans, I was pretty ecstatic when they slipped past the Giants’ B-team to make the playoffs. Now, after the ignominious quick farewell last Sunday, I see the playoff berth for the disaster it was. If only they had lost and Chicago had beaten Houston, there have been a chance that Zygy would dump Childress. Now he can’t, and in fact is foolish enough to think the Vikings are going deeper into the playoffs next year with Chili at the helm. There’s no way that’s going to happen, we all know that — all except Zygy, of course. Maybe his ultimate plan really is, as many bloggers have suggested, to move the team to LA after destroying fan interest in Minnesota.

swardson76 says:

January 6th, 2009 at 6:44 pm

Is Garcia unavailable?? He was vocally miserable in Tampa and after that Raiders loss at home (main reason Eagles were in the playoff’s) he should be easy to get. I agree that arguing over Gus and T Jack is futile. Where’s Warren Moon?!!!!

LuckyLeif says:

January 6th, 2009 at 10:16 pm

I think a major factor is audibles. I can’t remember once when the Vikings called an audible at the line this season. Does it take a Payton Manning to realize there is 8 men in the box. Also, it is no wonder Peterson has a lot of short gains, the linebackers in the 8 man box the vikings face usually creep forward. I’m surprised he gets what he does. They should go w/ the OU style of play calling and get on the line then call the play. BRING IN STOOPS. They got creative when they threw screens to Jim but they didn’t have anything else? Spread the field: screens, wr-screens, swing passes, flea-flickers, shovel-pass, direct-snap in the shotgun, end-around. This was such good chance to win a SB with no clear dominant teams. Something I’m kind of curious about is how much going to a SB next year would help getting a new stadium. We should also bring in Bill Gates too, we don’t need it to be state financed.
