Vikings game to be televised

January 3rd, 2009 – 3:27 PM by Judd Zulgad

Rest easy Vikings fans. You will be able to watch your team play host to the Eagles in a wild card playoff game Sunday.

The team announced this afternoon that it sold the remaining 3,100 tickets and thus avoided the team’s first local television blackout at the Metrodome since the 1997 regular-season finale. That means the Vikings’ first home playoff game since the 2000 season will be aired on Fox affiliate KMSP (Ch. 9) in the Twin Cities and surrounding areas as well as in secondary markets, including Alexandra, Redwood Falls, Austin, Mankato, Rochester, Bemidji and Mason City, Iowa.

This didn’t come without quite a bit of effort. Because only 55 percent of the Vikings’ season-ticket holders elected to purchase playoff tickets, the Vikings had 20,000 tickets to sell last Monday. That was a day after the Vikings clinched the NFC North title and a playoff berth with a victory over the New York Giants. What made the challenge heading into today so great was that the remaining tickets weren’t exactly cheap. Tickets were priced at $80, $120 and $160.

“We’re very happy,” said Steve LaCroix, the Vikings’ vice president of sales and marketing. “It took the full week and obviously it would be best to get it done the first day. But the key thing is it got done and the league was very accommodating giving us extra time to work through the holidays. We got started this morning with less than 2,000 tickets to go and had a real late push. In the late morning and early afternoon it really picked up. I definitely want to give the ultimate credit to our fans for making this happen.”

LaCroix said that unlike in previous situations the Vikings did not receive any corporate help to sell the remaining tickets.

The NFL’s blackout rules state that if a game is not sold out 72 hours before kickoff it can’t be televised in the home market, but the Vikings were given a 24-hour extension until 3:30 p.m. Friday. One extension isn’t rare, especially considering that it was a holiday on Thursday. However, when the game was not a sell out by Friday afternoon, the NFL granted another extension until 3:30 this afternoon. The NFL requires the Vikings to sell 62,000 tickets to consider a Metrodome game sold out.

Although two extensions are rare, the Vikings weren’t the only team to benefit from that this week. The Arizona Cardinals also were given until 24 hours before kickoff of today’s game against Atlanta to sell the remaining seats at University of Phoenix Stadium. The Cardinals managed to reach a sell out and avoid a blackout in that market.

What will be interesting now is to see the crowd that fills the Metrodome on Sunday. The Eagles had been encouraging their fans to “paint Minneapolis Green” and there is no doubt some folks from sports-crazed Philly probably took the advice. “I feel very confident the Metrodome will be very, very purple,” LaCroix said. “[The Eagles] got a lot of promotional value out of this but at the end of the day it’s hard to tell how much green is going to be in the stadium.”

Sunday’s game will mark the 115th consecutive sell out for the Vikings.

Although the game is now officially a sell out, the team announced there are still a limited number of seats available, including some returned by the Eagles. The Vikings also are encouraging any fans who need to pick up tickets at will call to arrive early.

For jstford: The remaining tickets were purchased by WTXF, the FOX affiliate in Philly. They are sending extra fans to the game so at least someone will be sitting there when the 3rd qtr begins.

doccj47 says:

Weird, I can still pull up tickets on Ticketmaster at 3:53. So much for a sell out, what a scam.

Right V-John, Alexander is awesome. He said he idolized Cris Carter growing up. I knew Cris Carter. I watched Cris Carter. … And you’re no Cris Carter, Larry. At least I don’t THINK he is!

kirbyr96 says:

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:02 pm

I too am able to pull up blocks of tickets on Ticketmaster. Lower level, upper level, etc.. Looks like the blackout was an empty threat. Either that, or FOX agreed earlier today that they’d commit to buying unsold tickets at some point closer to the game, and the NFL decided that counts as selling all tickets by 3:30. It’s definitely fishy!

Viking John says:

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Kenny, he would still look good in purple even if he isn’t CC. We could use a little more help at the WR postition. IMO……….

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:29 pm

How clever Senior. While the Vikings are practicing and getting ready for the playoffs, what’re Rodgers and Jennings doing? Sitting at home watching on their TV’s? Yep. And who went from 13-3 to 6-10? If your team sucked any more, you’d be the Lions.

Good to know. Some people mentioned that tickets are still available. If you read the article closely, the NFL deems 62,000 tickets sold as a sell-out. So there will still be a few tickets available. It appears that every ticket doesn’t actually have to be sold in order for it to be considered a sell-out. Strange.

I’m really looking forward to all the green in the stadium. I’ll be there with my McNabb jersey on.

Do some of you not even read the article prior to submitting a comment? It says right in there that a limited number of tickets are still available for purchase. They needed to sell 62000 to qualify as a sell out, the place holds over 64000.

DJ says:

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:35 pm

Hey Rodeo, you sound like a level-headed Eagles fan. What’s the attitude of Eagles fans coming into this game? Or do you not know? Seems like they are coming in cocky and not too worried. Do you think that’s accurate?

Dickie62 says:

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Senior they had a bad year last year ONE and OUT!!! HA ha ha Pukers Suck!!! But their fans suck even more.

rodeojones says:

January 3rd, 2009 at 4:46 pm

DJ…Many Eagles fans are confident, but I’ve learned not to get too excited. I do think the Eagles match up well against the Vikings and “should” win, but Peterson is amazing and is capable of changing the game around all on his own. What worries me most is that Westbrook is listed as questionable. Philly is a different team without him. I’m not your typical obnoxious, cocky Philly fan (unless you’re a Cowboys fan). Perhaps having moved in Minnesota in 1997 softened me a bit.

Either way, I expect a good game and I’m looking forward playing the Giants next week. But I’m also prepared to leave the dome tomorrow in a very bad mood.

DJ says:

January 3rd, 2009 at 5:01 pm

The Queens practicing? Practicing to lose yet another playoff game?

I can’t believe you’re still talking crap. So if we lose a playoff game, and the Packers can’t even be better than the Bears, what does that say about your squad? They are garbage. We all know it. You can try to deny it and wear your green and gold glasses, but everyone else in the league knows the Packers were one of the 10 worst teams in the league.

VIKINGS SOLD OUT THE DOME WITH NO OUTSIDE HELP
Posted by Mike Florio on January 3, 2009, 5:45 p.m.

So how did the Minnesota Vikings manage to sell out the Metrodome for the first playoff game to be played there since January 2001?

We’re not sure. But what we do know is that the Vikings didn’t get bailed out by the local FOX affiliate, or by a corporate sponsor.

“There was no corporate or network buyout,” Vikings V.P. of sales and marketing Steve LaCroix told Sean Jensen of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Though it’s not known how many Eagles fans will be coming from Philly for the game, there’s a chance that there will be plenty of green mixed in with the purple.

“Whoever does show up, we’re going to play our asses off for you,” defensive end Jared Allen said, “and it’s going to be a hell of a game.”

Even with help from Philly, something had to have happened in the last 24 hours to move 3,100 seats.

Here’s how they did it!!

Packer fans just can’t soak up reality. They still want to pretend it’s 1950 and the Packers are a “dynasty”, and there are 4 teams in pro football. They were better than the Vikings last year, I can admit that. Why can’t they admit their team is on the downslide while the Vikings are improving each year? Oh ya, the reality thing again.

GunslingerCA says:

January 3rd, 2009 at 5:50 pm

Somebody earlier had mentioned earlier that the Eagles are the hot team because they won 3 out of the last 5 games by 20+ points. If I’m an Eagles fan I’d be worried about those other two losses. Which Eagles team is going to show up? Last week was a fluke and didn’t show us much of what to expect this week. I’m thinking the McNabb that rifles the ball into the ground at his receivers feet will be nice to see. Or the gimpy Westbrook. This way the Packer fans can come on our site and say the Vikings got lucky again because the Eagles were hurt.

It sounds like the “Cream of Mushroom Soup” capital has softened you up a bit. And as you sit there Sunday watching the game in your McNabb jersey, just remember that the Viking’s all-time greatest player wore #5. Oops, my mistake, the Viking’s have never had a greatest player. There’s nothing you can do to change that and even IF the Vikes lose in the playoffs like the Pukers did last year you’ve still got a horrible team that’s going nowhere, whereas the Vikings will dominate for years to come. I seriously doubt you’ll even finish ahead of the Kitties next year. So deal with it and get some liquor or drugs or something to help ease the pain, no-one here can help you.

OUCH !!!!!!

KAPUT (FAN SINCE 1961) PREDICTION

EAGLES - 34
VIKINGS - 13

- tarvaris jackson gets the hook before halftime. several picks, sacks, bad decisions. he will look like a division III college QB
- adrian peterson bottled up all day
- the 2 so-called stars : berrian and allen will do nothing
- vikings offense will be smothered
- play calling will be brutal, vanilla
- mcnabb will give the purple defense fits and pick them apart
- westbrook will be all over the place
- purple special teams will be horrible
- no way does reid get outcoached by childress
- no team is playing worse heading into post-season

the FAN SINCE 1961 knows every tendency, has seen it all,
and knows this team does not belong in the playoffs.
The dream ends Sunday.
Since 2000 they have done nothing.
With the current regime, the purple will go nowhere.
Zygi, Childress, right down the line….. a joke…

Simulated a full game on Madden 2009 video game (XBOX 360): Eagles 34, Vikings 33.

McNabb threw for 491 yards, four TDs, four INTs. Threw a game winning TD to Kevin Curtis with 33 seconds to go. Vikings defense could not stop the quick hitting slant passes, as both Curtis and DeSean Jackson caught 10-plus balls and more than 130 yards each.

Peterson had an outstanding game, 165 yards and two TDs, on 31 carries. First play of the game was 71 yard TD run, stretch play right.

Jackson threw for more than 300 yards, but only threw one TD and was picked off twice.

Vikings special teams could not stop Jackson on punt returns, who averaged 19 yards a return on five attempts.

Late in the 4th, the Vikings offense rode Peterson down the one yard line, first and goal, but threw it three straight times for incompletions and had to settle for a field goal. McNabb drove the Eagles down the field for the winning TD on the ensuing drive.

Last drive of the game for the Vikings, Jackson got the Vikings to the Eagles 48, but followed that up with questionable time management by calling a timeout with 5 seconds to go on 3rd down after letting at least 5 seconds run off after a pass over the middle to Wade. Jackson heaved a pass down the middle that was picked off by a Eagles defender.

A McNabb kneel down ended the game.

beatmaka03 says:

January 4th, 2009 at 2:47 am

Scratch that, McNabb’s winning TD went to TE L.J. Smith. Both Smith and Curtis had two TD receptions
apiece.

Here’s a good story by Gonzo at Daily Norseman, he must have seen all the whining by Gayputz, Red Bobblehead on AV:

So, at this point, I’d like to bang out a quick memo to all of the people who ran their mouths about how it might be time to move the Minnesota Vikings or how their fans are “pathetic” and so forth.

Unless the next words out of your mouth are an apology, you should feel free to shut the hell up about Minnesota Viking fans. You’ve made it clear that you know absolutely nothing about the football fans of Minnesota. I understand that many of you are no doubt bitter that you (along with everyone else in America) will be watching the Minnesota Vikings in a playoff game tomorrow afternoon, because you’re still under the mistaken impression that your team is somehow better and more talented than the Minnesota Vikings.

If you’re not a fan of an NFC North team, that could be up for debate. If you ARE a fan of an NFC North team, it is not up for debate, because your team had 17 weeks to prove that they’re better and more talented than the Minnesota Vikings, and they couldn’t do it. That’s why our Beloved Purple will be hosting the Eagles tomorrow, and you’ll be whining about that fact on message boards throughout cyberspace.

So, seriously, come down off your high and mighty horses and join us commoners down here in the fields. Your team’s season is done. Minnesota’s season may or may not end tomorrow. But, regardless of whether or not that’s the case, the rest of the Vikings’ faithful and I will get to see our team play in at least 17 games this season. Only 11 other teams can make that claim in 2008, and none of those teams reside in the NFC North.

Most of you have been wrong about the Minnesota Vikings all season long. . .you were completely wrong about Vikings fans, in this case. . .and I hope that you’ll continue being wrong about both for another month or so.

DJ says:

January 4th, 2009 at 10:00 am

The Vikings can’t use Peterson like the Eagles use Westbrook. It has nothing to do with being “smart.” Westbrook is twice the receiver that Peterson is. Peterson is twice the RB. So the Vikes use him as a RB, not a receiver. It’s called playing to your strengths.

4Ever Viking says:

January 4th, 2009 at 10:08 am

Kaput for you information, if you KNEW ANYTHING about the football & the VIKINGS, no one is expecting TJack to win the game. He’ll be a contributor, manager of the game. He’ll be expected not to turn the ball over. He’ll put the ball into the hands of the playmakers that’s all. The playmakers will do the rest & our vaunted defense. Shhesshhh…WTF you been the last 17 games?

GunslingerCA says:

January 4th, 2009 at 10:45 am

ESPN’s “experts” are all over the Eagles, of course. It’s the easy thing to trash Jackson and say he won’t do anything because of the Eagles blitz. It’s like the experts think the Vikings are a passing team and are going to be hurt against the blitz. It’s like they forgot a young RB named Adrian Peterson. Chris Berman went so far as to say; “I wouldn’t rule out Gus Ferotte in this game”. Well, we’ve seen how successful the experts are so far this weekend. BTW, if you ever watch these clowns predict games, they are lucky to reach .500 on their picks for the whole year.

NOBODY BELIEVED IN US!!!

GunslingerCA says:

So far the stories on ESPN relating to the Vikings are the opinions that Tarvaris Jackson is practically a rookie and will not play well today, and Adrian Peterson’s trouble with fumbling.

I love the fact that everybody is on the Eagles. It makes me even more confident. Donovan McNabb will have a terrible day. I feel it.

Shocking. Now Cris Carter is ripping the Vikings again. Did something happen before CC retired that would make him so bitter against the Vikings? He seems to hate the Vikings.

And now an extended conversation on ESPN about AP fumbling and how the Eagles thrive on making people fumble.

Now CC is complaining that AP tries to get too many yards instead of being happy with 4-5 yards.

GunslingerCA says:

January 4th, 2009 at 11:44 am

ESPN did not have one positive thing to say about the Vikings that I saw. Tarvaris can’t handle the pressure, they have no number 1 receiver, AP is bound to fumble today.

On the flip side, McNabb is resilient and has come back better than ever. Brian Dawkins is ball hawking and will make AP fumble today, the Eagles could get 2 turnovers today to win, the Eagles are dangerous because they didn’t expect to get in so today’s game is a bonus game to them.

Nice stories ESPN.

j.ay says:

January 4th, 2009 at 11:46 am

I can’t believe how shallow ESPN’s analysis is. Yeah the Eagles blitz alot and TJ’s a young QB, we get it. I haven’t seen any depth about any other aspect of this game.

GunslingerCA says:

January 4th, 2009 at 11:52 am

What the hell? Cris Carter just picked the Vikings to win! After ripping us for 2 hours on pregame, CC picked us to win.

4 out of 5 ESPN guys picked the Eagles to win. Then again, they have picked against the Vikings for weeks and weeks.

GunslingerCA says:

January 4th, 2009 at 11:56 am

You are correct j.ay

Chris Berman just picked the Eagles to go to the Superbowl. Based on what? Oh ya, last weeks game at Dallas. I guess they’re on fire. Of course, Dallas did drop the ball on 5 straight possessions last week and refused to tackle anybody. But whatever.

4Ever Viking says:

January 4th, 2009 at 11:59 am

No one is giving us a chance and that is for good reason guys. I love the Vikes, but they really haven’t showed any consistency offensively (hence the fodder for naysayers), and until they start doing that, on a regular basis, we will get no respect. Just gotta take all that negative talk in stride, like the players do, and prove them wrong. It’s games like this whether we win or lose, the experience will be built for the future. Experience, rather the lack thereof, right now is the one thing that hurts Tarvaris alot.

The Vikes plays as a team for 60 minutes and we will win!!!!

GO VIKES!!!!!!

matty927 says:

any stat guru’s out there know what the Vikes home playoff record is at the dome??
I can remember a few losses years ago…Vikes 6-2 at home this year, Philly 3-4-1 on the road

would love to see the vikes control the clock and play field position and make the eagles go long stretches of the field…would also be fun to have the Vikes come out in a no huddle and prevent the Eagles d from setting up some of those blitzes

cheeseweasel says:

January 4th, 2009 at 12:19 pm

It seems like Philly got alot of help from Dallas last week to make them look so good. It just depends on which Vikings show up today. Could win big, or lose. I’ll be happy that they won the North and that they seem to be heading in the right direction with a good owner and alot of good players. Regardless of what happens there is reason to be optimistic for next year. And one more thing that may make everyone laugh? It seems like the coach improved this year and is learning and could develop into a good coach. We’ll see.
Vikings 27
Eagles 24

GunslingerCA says:

January 4th, 2009 at 12:34 pm

I think the Eagles need to worry more about which team is going to show up today. The Eagles that played Washington or the one that played Dallas. If anybody has not been consistent it has been the Eagles. The Vikings have been consistently in all of their games. Even against the Falcons with all those turnovers the Vikings had the ball with a chance to tie. In a close game, which I believe this will be, I believe the Vikings have the edge.
