You might have seen a note on the blog earlier today that the Vikings have signed former Wisconsin kicker Taylor Mehlhaff and Nebraska-Omaha linebacker Kenny Onatolu to reserve/futures contracts. So what does that mean? It’s pretty simple actually. The two won’t be around until this spring and will count against the 80-man roster for 2009. In other words, the Vikings are taking care of some offseason business while this season is still ongoing. The Packers, for instance, signed a group of players to these type of contracts today.
The Mehlhaff signing is somewhat interesting. He got a two-year deal. Here is a piece from the Argus Leader. Mehlhaff spent time with New Orleans this season and was 3-for-4 on field goals and 9-for-10 on extra points in three games.
