Vikings have 14,000 tickets left

December 30th, 2008 – 1:24 PM by Judd Zulgad

A television blackout of the Vikings’ playoff game against the Eagles on Sunday is becoming closer to a reality.

The team announced today that fans purchased more than 6,000 tickets on Monday for their wild card playoff game but that still means that approximately 14,000 tickets remain. That is a significant number and time is running out.

Under NFL rules those tickets must be sold 72 hours before kickoff, or by 3:30 p.m. Thursday, in order for the game not to be blacked out on Twin Cities Fox-affiliate KMSP (Ch. 9). The NFL almost certainly will grant the Vikings a 24-hour extension, meaning that they will have until Friday afternoon to sell the tickets. However, with the holiday this week that might not be enough time. Ticket prices range from $30 to $160. The Vikings have had various players on the radio today trying to get the word out about tickets.

This would mark the Vikings first blackout in this market since the regular-season finale in 1997. An NFL playoff game has not been blacked out in a local market since Miami-area residents were unable to see the Dolphins play host to Baltimore on Jan. 13, 2002.

Note: The Vikings have signed former Wisconsin kicker Taylor Mehlhaff and Nebraska-Omaha linebacker Kenny Onatolu to reserve contracts. Mehlhaff was a sixth-round pick by New Orleans in 2008.

Are you bored without fantasy football? Check out this football simulation game. You can create players and manage their careers, or help run a team. A new season is about to start, so now is a good time to check it out. After you go buy your Vikings tickets, of course.

I’d be there if I didn’t live 3,000 miles away :( Wish I could make it actually, what a blast that’d be!

How many sacks short did Edwards fall short in breaking Strahan’s record? Twenty or so?

LetsGoTwoSmokes says:

So because i’m broke, i can’t watch the game on tv. I’d kill to go, but didn’t think i’d have to! Does local blackout only apply to the twin cities? I live in the sticks up north. Any information would help.

akvikesfan says:

smokes, when I lived down there (so this info is quite old) the blackouts only applied to the immediate metro area.

Although, I think if you (or a bar near you) has sattelite, then you can watch the game regardless.

Whatever we do we need to cover Westbrook well. And that wouldn’t be by Cedric Griffin, I mean Griffin could cover him, just not well.

Viking fans have a time-honored tradition of being too cheap to buy playoff tickets. Why would anyone expect that to change now?

gorsk4023 says:

December 30th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

so wait a minute…at midnight, the vikings had 20,000 tickets to sell. It’s now 14 hours later, and they’ve sold over a quarter of those tickets. Doesn’t that suggest that they’re on pace to sell enough by Thursday, or at least by Friday (assuming the NFL grants an extension)?

I probably shouldn’t bash on Vikes fans b/c I’m not planning on buying a ticket, but I’m also in school and have no money - so shoot. Seriously, MN? MVP candidate running back, dome, playoffs at home for the first time in six years, and a possible blackout? Unbelievable. Maybe this really IS Twins Territory.

Thanks ak. I have satellite, but not sunday ticket. Hope that’s enough. I don’t want to do anything rash, but i will if i have to. I was saving that “plan” for whenever the Vikes made the big show! 400 bucks and i can get two lower level tickets row 3 on the 25 yard line. From ticketmaster! Unreal. I’ve never been able to get tickets through them, only scalpers!
Go Vikes!!!

You guys are a joke. Your team hasn’t been in the playoffs in years and you can’t even sell out a playoff game. I know the economic times are tough, but come on show some respect for your team. Then again, if Tavaris Jackson was the quarterback for the Eagles, I probably wouldn’t waste my money either.

Goodell just finished up his live chat thingy. He mentioned that “because of the short holiday week” they’re already looking at granting extensions, so I don’t think that’ll be a problem.

Smokes, I’m not for certain on it, but I remember getting blacked out games on my TV in the Park Rapids area a couple times. That was sattelite. Best of luck to ya! But I’d say go ahead and go nuts this weekend, get yourself a ticket. You wont regret it, no matter what EaglesFan says.

The game will sell out…no worries!

j.ay says:

December 30th, 2008 at 2:48 pm

Yeah I don’t think it will be blacked out either ak. Hey I was looking at your post a couple blogs ago about the draft prospects and I agree about Alex Mack, I’ve read a couple scouts who say you could plug him in and have a ProBowl center for years to come. And he should be available when we pick in the 1st round. He sounds like he’s got more potential than anyone else we could get with our pick.

akvikesfan says:

December 30th, 2008 at 2:51 pm

j.ay, I’ve been toting Mack on this blog for months now. And that was before our pick moved to #23 from the mid-teens. I think the guy is a monster, good character, smart as can be. Some scouts have called him the Peyton Manning of Offensive Lines due to the way he orchestrates audibles and shifts. A natural born leader, and my top candidate for the Vikes 1st rounder.

akvikesfan says:

December 30th, 2008 at 2:54 pm

Plus, if we let Birk go, then not only would it give us more justification for drafting Mack, but we could probably plan on shaving quite a bit of cap space and getting a compensation draft pick. it’s a very economical choice. The wild card in this plan, is none of us fans know how good John Sullivan is, or has become.

j.ay says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:05 pm

But we know that scouts think that Mack is the best center to come into the draft in years and they didn’t think that about Sullivan. A month ago I would have said draft a CB to replace Griffin but he’s really starting to make plays. He was better than Toine on Sunday.

j.ay says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:09 pm

We have to get a decent OT, another WR (I was expecting way more from Rice this year) and another CB couldn’t hurt but we really don’t have that many holes to fill, if Mack is as good as the scouts think then draft him. Personally I’m hopeful that TJ has turned a corner but as good as this team is we obviously need a Grade A QB, I still think it might turn out to be McNabb who I think we could get for a #2 pick.

Stiff Arm says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:14 pm

Cedric Griffin couldn’t cover Phyllis Diller.

akvikesfan says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:17 pm

Hmm… interesting about McNabb. My general thought is that this is a poor draft class for QB and a poor Free Agent class at QB. So, I think it could be a mistake to try and make any drastic changes to the QB position this offseason. I’d rather take the wait and see approach, maybe draft someone like David Johnson (Tulsa) late in the draft to compete with Booty, and see if anyone gets cut before training camp.

To me, Center is a big need as soon as we allow Birk to walk, so Mack is as sure fire of a pick as we can make. In round two, a guy like Alex Boone, Phil Loadholt, or Jason Watkins should be available to step into the right tackle position.

Assuming nobody wants to spend a real high draft pick on wide outs, there are two sleepers that intrigue me. The first is Ramses Barden out of Cal poly-SLO. He’s 6′-6″ with very good speed, and has a minimum of 130 yards and a TD in every game this year. The knock on him is the small school status, but he may jump up people’s lists come the combine. The second is a little guy, Deon Butler out of Penn State. They say he’s too small for the NFL, but we’ve all heard that before, right? Should be available in the seventh, and could be a great sleeper pick who brings return skills to the table.

2Minute Tommy says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

I think the Vikings drafted Sullivan to replace Birk. There was something written around mid-season on how well he’s progressed. He was suppose to be the 2nd best center in last years draft. I’d actually like to see the Vikings draft Duke Robinson, the guard from Oklahoma.

akvikesfan says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

At cornerback, I think if we can show Sapp the door, sign a rehabed Charles Gordon to his restricted free agent tender, and sign a medium-profile free agent (like Daunta Robinson or Justin Miller) then we will be fine.

The bigger concern for me is at safety. Assuming Sharper wlaks, then that leaves us with Madeiu “made of glass” Williams, Tyrell “I did okay filling in” Johnson, Michael “I thought I was going to be a Viking” Boulware, and Eric “nobody knows I’m a Viking” Frampton. The Vikings desperatly need to sign a guy like Atogwe or Phillips to shore up the safety spots.

akvikesfan says:

December 30th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

Tommy, I got to admit, I’d be pretty upset if the Vikings spent their first rounder on a guard. Sullivan might be coming along fine, and that’s great, but guard is not a problem on this team. Hutch is great, and Herrerra is solid, and the depth is decent. Most centers have no problem playing guard if need be anyways.

The need is too great at QB, WR, TE, OT, C, CB, and SS to take a guard with the first rounder.

I must have been giggling too hard. Ak should come to the game, what’s 3000 miles? You might see plays like this. I’m sitting fifteen people to the left of the Purple Hair Lady:

Can anyone here believe that Cowher, Schotty, Holmgren & Shannahan are all jobless and that we still have Chili? I couldn’t have made this up if I’d tried three years ago.
