Vikings coach Brad Childress said he named Tarvaris Jackson as his starting quarterback because “he gives our team the best chance right now.”
“That takes nothing away from Gus,” Childress said. “It’s more a product of what Tarvaris has done with the ball in his hand. … There are those factors. I’m evaluating the medical part of it. And I’m getting my sense of where they’re at and the hot hand. Just making a decision. I’ve got to make a decision one way or the other.”
Childress declined to say whether Jackson is his starter for Sunday’s game against Atlanta only or for the rest of the season.
“I’m staying in the now,” he said.
Frerotte, who said his back feels 100 percent, is not happy with the decision.
“It’s up to coach,” he said. “Obviously I’m not happy about it. I mean, anybody that’s competitive wants to be the guy that’s out there. I put a lot of hard work and a lot of effort into this. But it’s coach’s decision, and I’ll be out there to help this team no matter what.”
Frerotte was asked about the long-term implications of this decision.
“I don’t know,” he said. ”… Right now, I can’t worry about any of that. I’ve just got to focus on whatever we can do, whatever I can do, to help this team beat Atlanta. That’s the obvious goal, because we want to beat Atlanta and get to the playoffs. All that other stuff, people have things that go through the mind. You guys will put all of that in the paper, but I really don’t know how to answer that question.”
Childress said he understands Frerotte’s disappointment.
“He wanted to start and that’s what you want,” Childress said. “You want guys who want the ball in their hands.”
Berrian update: Childress said he gave Bernard Berrian a rest day.
Injury report: Artis Hicks (triceps), Darius Reynaud (toe), Frerotte (back), Adrian Peterson (ankle) and Brian Robison (knee) had limited participation. Jared Allen (knee) did not practice.
I want to start too but you don’t start me chilli, you dumbass.
first!
Awww… Garrett! Darn.
Glad Berrian is just resting. Glad Chili decided to go with TJack for now.
They probably just fused Gus’ spinal column together figuring he couldn’t possibly be any less mobile.
Jackson’s rating vs. Green Bay (at GB): 59.0
Frerotte’s rating vs. Green Bay (at Home): 53.4
Jackson also played ok against Indianapolis but Shiancoe dropped a TD pass.
Jackson should never have been benched in the first place.
[…] Access Vikings: – […]
Jackson has not gone up against any worthwhile teams yet.
The next 2 weeks will give some insight if he’s worth a sh&t or not.
Sheets, I only like Jackson as a 140 rated passer. He wasn’t good in the first 2 games. Be happy he was benched, he is a new man since.
The 4td make me happy, but combine them with 300 yards of passing, then we’re talking.
Cheets: The NFL just held a press conference. It turns out they are awarding playoff appearances only for win-loss records, not QB ratings. Jackson started 0-2, Ferrotte put this team in contention. It doesn’t matter the reason.
Kaput: The Cardinals have clinched their division and have one of the most potent passing offenses in the league with two 1,000 yard receivers. Just because the Vikings shut them down doesn’t mean the Cards and Kurt Warner didn’t play very good up to that point. Don’t diminish what Jackson did last week. He did just about everything right.
ViKing: Passing yards doesn’t really matter. See my answer to Cheets and Kaput. Wins and losses baby!! Jackson was calm, cool, and collected for the past 6 quarters. If he falls on his face in the 1st half against Atlanta, then you put a “100%” Gus back in there in the second half. Until then, stick with the hand that is on fire.
Yup, what he said (gunslinger that is).
Jackson did not have any pressure on him last week. Take away the Berrian toss and a very decent / average / safe day.
More proof needed. Next 2 weeks and if fortunate enough to get into the playoff - a road game would be very telling.
correct, pressure will be the test. But when teams do put on the pressure, that’s when you punish them with a little AD time. That’s the whole point of this team in theory… if they’re worried enough about the pass game to bring the pressure then AD needs to burn them. If they start to over compensate for AD, then that’s when TJack should have all the time in the world to throw. That balance is what we need, and we’ve achieved it ever since TJack stepped in against Detroit.
1 sure thing.
If peterson does not stay healthy, this team will become very average very fast.
His health is the key to any success.
I have to say that the “no pressure” thing was for several reasons. The first was Jackson delivered that bomb to Berrian to put us up 14-0. Jackson’s pass and the lead were the reason the kid could relax. 2nd, was the over whelming defense the Vikings put on. 3rd, was the excellent play calling to relieve pressure. I’ve been screaming for more screen passes the whole year. It’s amazing what 2 bombs and 2 screen passes does to loosen up the defense for both the 10 yard pass and the draw play.
Nobody is annointing Jackson the next great QB, or the next mediocre QB. But you simply cannot take anything away from Jackson for his play the last 6 quarters. You don’t even have to compare his play to his awful play previously. He simply played outstanding football and did what he was asked and what he was supposed to do.
Kaput — Jackson has played on the road, and when T-Jack plays, AP has more yards, because the Falcons will have to spy T-Jack. So there will be one less defender to TRY and tackle adrian. Both times T-Jack has played since he returned, he has played on the road.
Again, what he said.
The bottom line is that TJack has the physical skills (mobility, strong arm, etc) to be a competant QB. As long as he plays smart, takes care of the football, and doesn’t go all spastic-jump-pass-to-the-dirt on us, then he should be successful. Maybe not incredible, but successful.
Time tells lads how good or how average
Jackson really is. Things are just getting interesting as the weak are getting weeded out.
“Cheets: The NFL just held a press conference. It turns out they are awarding playoff appearances only for win-loss records, not QB ratings.”
With that said … Jackson is 10-6 (this includes the game against Detroit where he led the team from behind for the win) over the last two year. I think that is good enough to make the playoffs 90% of the time
I mean what the hell? I am not starting in the Pro Bowl? Action figure simulations do not lie. I was all world superstar hall of fame TE in those simulations.
Why did bones change his name to G. Mills?
If you could change your name to Garrett Mills, wouldn’t you? Who wouldn’t?
I have seen what Gus can do…and it isn’t very much. Not mobile, not accurate, and plays like he is old. I would take Jackson any day. Frerotte is a backup…nothing more. He is nothing like Warner or Favre or any of the other late 30’s qbs. Here I think Childress made the right decision. Frerotte needs to recognize he will not see another snap unless TJack tanks. Hey Gus…you had an ok career.
fox, when you say “I’ve seen what Gus can do…” what do you mean? On TV like the rest of us? At the games like some of us? In a game of pickup in your back yard like none of us?
Just curious.
Troy Williamson just had a 3 yard catch! Boy, are we ever missing out on his blazing speed… not to mention the stellar eyesight and unrivaled knack for catching a football.
two games does not a career make! T-Joke was playing WAY OVER HIS HEAD. I bet you will see just how far away he is from being a NFL Caliber QB this week end, and if he makes it to the Giants game it will really be apparent.
thanks for that, dick.
feel free to come back next Thursday and tell us about how 3 good games doesn’t make a career either.
Wow, the Jags are really taking it to the Colts so far… not a huge score or anything, but just long and sustained drives with good D. Wonder if it will last.
This one agrees with D62 on TJ
I will have been a fan of the VIKeS for 50 years in 2011 when they move to LA. As long as we have the DIP WAD we will never be a winner. T-JOKE might have been a good qb but he was pushed into starting because of DIP WAD wanted to show everyone how smart he was. It back fired it should everyone how stupid he is.
I agree on all of that, but you know what, the team is winning now. TJack is doing good now. Chili is coaching okay now. Why not just enjoy it a bit. After 47 years of being a fan, you have to be just a bit excited about the recent success, no?
If Dickie has been a fan for 50 years, that means he is older than 50. He is a 50+ year old that says dip wad. Interesting.
good observation.
And do 50+ year olds really make random Yoda references?: “two games does not a career make!”
TJax, is an inconsistent incompetent QB. The action figures do not lie.
Bones…I mean G. Mills, you know what doesn’t lie? 4 td’s last game.
This just in: Garrett Mills thinks his starting quarterback is inconsistent and incompetent.
This also just came in: nobody cares, because he’s, well… Garrett Mills.
this one has been a fan since the beginning in 1961. i have seen it all.
Of course that is what Frerotte is going to say. What was he suppose to say? “I’m a pussie and I am glad to be taking a break. Those boys really hit hard out there.” Gus knows he doesn’t deserve to start. He has been less than average the last few games.
What about Gus makes him a reliable quarterback? He’s old, he’s never been good, he gets hurt every time he gets touched, he’s slow, and he throws just as bad if not worse interceptions than Tavaris. If nothing else, Tavaris at least has the potential to make those throws to Berrian, Wade, and Rice.
If anyone has a problem with someone on this blog being over 50, “front and center”, lets go!
Let’s remember that we are arguing about two below average QB’s at this stage of their career. The big difference is their “stage”. We know the limits of Gus, we still need to learn them about TJack. I know some of you think he will never amount to anything, but the fact is he still could. Gus will not, and needs to accept that he was brought here as a back-up, and that is likely how he will and should finish the season.
If you’re going to “take away one throw” when talking about TJack, then what did Gus do against Chicago if you take out the 99 yarder to BB? Not much!
…and the week before last he was blowin’ big time against one of the worst teams in the league before he got hurt. If you discount what TJ did against Detroit, what does that say about Gus’s performance that day?
If Gus wants to stay in the lineup, he should quit throwing the passes that turn him into a tackler. He’s apparently not built for that.
Who knows what to expect from TJack? But I do know that Gus Frerotte is definitely not the future of the team. At least Jackson *might* be. It is entirely possible that watching 8 more games from the sidelines made the game “slow down” for him or whatever it is the talking heads always yammer about. I have no idea if that’s true or not but there is a lot more *potential* upside with Jackson than there is with Frerotte. I really hope the kid makes it. He’s really had a lot of crap talked about him.
I would bet the ranch (if I had one), TJ
will never amount to more than an average/adequate QB. This is perhaps acceptable to some - many. Yes Gus is and has always been a backup. The future is very unstable at the most important position on the football team. And chances are playoff time (if they are fortunate enough to make the post-season) will expose the weaknesses.
Again - Peterson must stay healthy else the team becomes average plus.
Yea wis, T Jax was almost as good as Peyton Manning was tonight….. you are truly a football ignorant moron……
How many td’s did Manning throw tonight?
Hey Garret, are you a “realist”?
Just some thoughts on how bad TJack is. Yeah, he posted a 143 qback rating against Detroit, but Detroit is lousy. And Gus only posted a 50 rating against the same team on the same day. Ferotte posted an 82 the 1st time we played them at home. Peyton Manning had a 110 against Detroit last week. On Thanksgiving, when Detroit rolled over and played dead, Collins had an 82. Let’s see, TJack had the highest rating of any opposing qback Detroit played this year. But it was only half a game. What aboout Arizona? Hmmm, same result. TJack posted the highest rating of any opposing qback against them too, 135. Eli Manning - 127. McNabb at home - 121. Favre at home - 123. Delhomme at home - 122. But he’s never really been under pressure. Wasn’t he on the field when the Vikes were behind Detroit and participated in drives that took the lead twice? Maybe there is hope yet. And for the record, I am also over 50 years old.
inspector, all good points.
Another one is during our 4 game win streak - score Vikes-119 opp.-56. We also held the cards to a season low 14 points. One of the td’s was of course the blocked fg.
The Big question Homies. If T-Jack gets us a win on Sunday, is he the QB of the future??? I like Gus, but he is not our future for the qb position. We need to find out if T-Jack can lead our team for the next 5-10 years, if not who do we get and when do we get. If T-Jack is the guy we need to support him through the good and bad.
Smooter got hosed for the pro-bowl.
Go Vikes
This schedule has worked out for us much better than we anticipated at the start of the year.
Initially, the indoor and southern games made it Vike friendly. CoaChili doesn’t like to practise outdoors so the absence of Lambeau in December was thought to be a good thing.
But the finishing trio of ‘Zona, Falcon and Giant were considered to be too rough. Nonsense, friends. Putting up these three contenders as playoff previews has been ideal. The team is feeling pretty good about itself and enjoys the test against the ‘putative’ tough competition. Being at home for the last two contests; all the better.
Really, could you have designed a better schedule overall?
By the way, you 50+ year olds should be sleeping or taking your V.iagra. One way or another you should be happy.
just kiddin
Smooter got Hos.ed
Go Vikes
Putative? Thats a word you seldom hear. I like it.
Atlanta is 3-4 on the road, but are 0-3 vs teams with a winning record. 0-4 if you include the saints. Our Vikes are 5-1 at home, and are 2-1 vs teams with winning records. 3-1 if you include the texans. I like our chances.
[…] Gus Frerotte might be unhappy about it, but as you would expect, Tavaris Jackson will be starting at quarterback when the Vikings face the Falcons on Sunday. “It’s up to coach,” Frerotte said. “Obviously I’m not happy about it. I mean, anybody that’s competitive wants to be the guy that’s out there. I put a lot of hard work and a lot of effort into this. But it’s coach’s decision, and I’ll be out there to help this team no matter what.” […]

Since I am over 40, I don’t have the energy anymore to post on this site at 12:04 am, or 1:23 am or 3:56 am! Jeez, I guess this is therapy for insomniacs! I like the discussion about Tarvaris Jackson. I agree with those who say that they would like him to show us more before handing him the keys to “Vikings Nation”. However, even the most cynical skeptic must realize that he is currently playing better than Gus was prior to breaking his back. He does seem to have matured over the course of his season while “riding the pine”. I hope that he continues to play at a very high caliber. If not, I don’t like our chances to even make a little splash in the playoffs this year, which would be a shame considering how much talent we have on this team currently.
