Jackson honored

December 16th, 2008 – 6:09 PM by Judd Zulgad

Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson has been named the NFC offensive player of the week after throwing a career-high four touchdown passes in the Vikings’ 35-14 victory over Arizona on Sunday in Glendale, Ariz. Jackson, playing for injured veteran Gus Frerotte, completed 11 of 17 passes for 163 yards and posted an impressive 135.5 passer rating. Jackson becomes the first Vikings quarterback to earn NFC offensive player of the week honors since Daunte Culpepper did it in 2005.

Jackson has a passer rating of 141.7 and has completed 19 of 27 passes with five touchdowns and no interceptions since replacing Frerotte late in the first half of the Vikings’ victory at Detroit on Dec. 7. It’s almost certain Jackson will start again this Sunday against Atlanta in place of Frerotte, who was expected to miss one to two weeks because of a broken bone in his lower back.

Sorry, but I’m not sure anyone saw this coming…

Ummm, cool.
I’m with VQ, though, a tad blind sided by the whole TJack success thing.

I hope for a repeat… or perhaps a three-peat… performance.

Kaput says:

11/17 for 163 yards
and 4 TDs
just doesn’t seem right.
more proof needed - 2 to go then hopefully into the playoffs.

I tell you what…if he can have a good performance against that Giants defense I will become a T-Jack convert. That said, he had some fantastic throws and only one brain cramp against the Cards, which came near the beginning of the game and the Cards didn’t catch.

Kaput says:

December 16th, 2008 at 6:42 pm

yes the giants game will be very interesting. not considering the lions & cards a good test. thank god for AD.
he gets injured, the purple will become very average very fast.

akvikesfan says:

December 16th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

I’ll be curious how he does with Abraham chasing him around this week. He had all day to throw against the Cards.

akvikesfan says:

December 16th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

A few screens (what’s that Chili, that’s right, i said screens) to Abraham’s side of the field might make him a little more hesitant to rush the passer like a bull on steroids… that is if we can make those screens productive at all.

Kaput says:

December 16th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

yep
the test will be when the pressure is on.
the decision-making.

Fragile Fred Smoot says:

How about that? Just like your old pal Fred told everyone, TJack, Fred was behind you all the way!! But one bad game and your old Pal Fred will be off the bandwagons quick as a wink.

But for nows…Fred told everyone this was going to work!!

I’m still Leery too (Hey, wasn’t that a type of acid back in the ’60’s, leery 2?)
While I’m spectacularly happy for Jackson, I still can’t forget the inconsistency of his play last year.
I’m hoping for the best though. . .

Go get ‘em TJack!

stugel says:

December 16th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Freds you could have settled this long ago had you fist fought Gus Feroch, putting him out for the year.

akvikesfan says:

December 16th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Consistency is the key, for sure, fran.

akvikesfan says:

December 16th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

So, i remember Childress having this rule that you have to at least draft a QB each year. Given the current climate at QB, who/when should the Vikings draft as QB?

My guess would be a guy like Chase Holbrook of New Mexico late (5th or 6th round). He’s a big guy, who might be considered an upgrade over Booty. He’s kind of a Colt Brennan type, only less hyped.

akvikesfan says:

December 16th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

Oh, and I guess 6th round isn’t really an option since that pick was traded away last year to get Kelly Holcombe… ugh.

Who knows though, if we lose Birk, Sharper, and K-Sasser… there should be plenty of compensation picks being thrown our way.

kennyrogers says:

December 16th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

I expected Jackson to take over for an injured Gus, but only Fragile believed he would take advantage of the opportunity and shine. I think the reason is Childress hasn’t been overcoaching him. When Chili gets stressed out, he gets in TJack’s head and he starts effing up. Childress needs to not start the micro-managing again and just make a plan to win the game. We’ve got to beat the Giants, we CAN beat the Giants, and most importantly, we WILL beat the Giants. The Falcons……….I dunno.

Good for T-Jack. Happy to see him receive some Kudos after all the crap he’s had said about him by the media over the years.

snappy viking says:

December 16th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

This is good. He deserves this. The majority of us have beaten this guy up unmercifully in these posts (me included). It’s good to have him experience some success.

VikingsGenius says:

December 16th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

I liked his mobility when he was first put in to replace Brad “I’ve got Lincoln Log Legs” Johnson. Then, reality hit as it soon became apparent that T-Jack was not able to read defenses, threw erratic and errant passes, and did not “get” the NFL game. Now, however, I see a young, promising quarterback who still shows us those physical skills, but appears to have become a student of the game, and is seeing the field and making good and quick decisions. I wish him (and the entire Vikings franchise) success. It’s been a long time coming for us patient, long-suffering Vikings faithful!

I’m not convinced, he had a couple of adequate games. I do not see any quality consistent play from him yet. I hope he comes around, don’t see it coming. I think we are going to be disappointed again and will take a few years to get him an BC out of our heads and we will be no closer to the championship we have all wanted since back in the day!

68 Fan is being realistic. Hopefully this isn’t the pinochle of Tarvaris’s career. The true test is taking your team down the field in the two minute drill and winning the game.

kennyrogers says:

December 16th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

the “t” must stand for “twenty”

Maybe he has but I’ve seen alot of QB’s and don’t see it from him. Hope I’m wrong because it will take another couple on years to get back on track and our defense maybe not be as good.

“It’s almost certain Jackson will start again this Sunday against Atlanta in place of Frerotte.”

Goin’ out on a limb here, Judd? What’s your take on the locker room vote, if both QB’s were healthy, for which QB should be on the field? There seemed to be a lot of verbal support for TJ when the season started, and there seems to be some renewed energy on the team with him back in the line-up. What do you sense from the team as a whole?

Garrett Mills says:

FF? I lost to this girl who cheated but doesn’t think it was cheating beacuse she and her 5th grade clique said it was ok. Too bad that chick can’t cheat at UPE cause she sure blows at that.

B. Grant says:

Pro Bowlers are nice and all, but this team has been to the playoffs once in the last 7 years. Those selections mean a whole lot more when the team is competing in the post-season. I don’t really care how many Pro-Bowlers we have, to be honest. I want to watch us in playoff games!! Git ‘er done, Chili and ganng!!

kennyrogers says:

December 17th, 2008 at 9:51 am

Right Bud! I’m tired of watching the other teams in the playoffs, it’s gotta be our turn. Hopefully we don’t have to look at tiebreakers to get in. The Eagles are lucky because they had that tie game and it’s much easier to figure out the Eagles’ playoff chances. You see, Coach, a 10-5-1 record beats 10-6, but loses to 11-5.

You’re welcome!

B. Grant says:

December 17th, 2008 at 10:04 am

I am now a smarter man…

So, in 1958, players didn’t know that a tied championship game went into overtime…in 2008, a professional QB didn’t know that a game ends in a tie after playing 15 minutes of overtime…but now what I need to know is…would 9-5-2 win out or lose out to 10-6?

B. Grant says:

December 17th, 2008 at 10:27 am

I believe the correct answer would be 9-5-2 being a better record than 10-6.

kennyrogers says:

December 17th, 2008 at 10:30 am

I think the 10-6 wins because the NFL says ties are like losses, although I have always heard ties are like kissing your sister.

B. Grant says:

December 17th, 2008 at 10:38 am

I don’t have a sister, but I hate ties, and I hate Bud Selig, who apparently likes ties.

10-6 = 10 divided by 16 = .625

If ties are treated as games-not-played (not a win or a loss), then…

9-5-2 = 9 divided by 14 = .643

Anybody?

Vi King says:

December 17th, 2008 at 10:54 am

I think it works on the invisible point system, where a win is 2 points, and a tie is one. 10-6 is 20 points, and 9-5-2 is…it’s a tie, Noooooooooooooo

kennyrogers says:

December 17th, 2008 at 11:34 am

There were lots of ties in Hockey, don’t know how they were figured in the standings. Here’s a web site for Hockey ties, but there’s a new blog!

This is a pretty cool online program from Yahoo that let’s you check out the different playoff scenarios.

Select “current standing” in the drop down box, and then you can pick game winners for weeks 16 and 17 to see the different playoff scenarios.

Jackson doesn’t have enough starts to qualify, but his cumulative QB rating on the season is 96.1, which is #4 best in the league for current starters. Just saying…
