No fine for Cherilus

December 12th, 2008 – 2:58 PM by Chip Scoggins

Detroit rookie right tackle Gosder Cherilus was not fined by the NFL for his hit to Jared Allen’s knees, according to a league spokesman.

Allen suffered a left knee injury when Cherilus, who was on his knees, blocked Allen at the knees as he ran down the line in pursuit on a pass play away from his side. Allen was irate after the play and had to be restrained from going after Cherilus.

One play later, Vikings linebacker Napoleon Harris and Detroit fullback Moran Norris were called for personal fouls with Norris receiving a disqualification for throwing a punch. Both Harris and Norris received $5,000 fines on Friday.

Vikings defensive tackle Fred Evans also was fined $5,000 for his face mask penalty on Kevin Smith.

I thought that on the replay, there was no face mask on Smith by Evans. I think what you meant to say, Chip, was that the game officials were charged $5000 each for being bad at their jobs.

If it would have been anybody other than Jarod then he would have been fined. Why am I not surprised?

Goodel and the Vikes seem to be at odds with each other. I think somebody really wants to see the vikes end up in L.A. Telling JA and Edwards to stop playing so hard, allowing players to take cheap shots at our QB, allowing players to take cheap shots at our Jared Allen, suspending WilliamWall for what appears to be a pretty clear case of entrapment… the list goes on and on.

How can Evans be fined when the replay shows he didn’t even touch the facemask?! Does the league not even look at the replays before they decide to fine? The league is really starting to annoy me.

HUH? TheGuyWhoWins thinks that one must actually grasp a facemask if one is to be penalized for it. One must also substantially yank hard on said facemask to be fined for it. Since the facemask was a phantom call, should Evans pay the fine in Monopoly money? Or phantom money?

Did the game between the Falcons and Vikings get switched to 3:15 pm CT, or was it originally scheduled at that time?

Tomb says:

I’d like to put Goodell in assless chaps, spin him in circles until he’s dizzy and drop him off in downtown San Fran.

Tomb does not care for him.

vsf, game time changed.
Evans should appeal, and then send a bill to the nfl for wasting his time.

Where can I find the Roger Goodell fan club blog? This is apparently not it.

Freds, I already got your present, guess I might as well tell you…. Nautical Navigational Maps. You won’t lose your way next time, captain! Just glad I can help.

Which accounts for more yards…an 8 yard run or an 8 yard pass? Yards is yards, boys. It don’t mean much to stop the run if you can’t at least hinder the passing game a bit as well. Mr. Bellicek taught you that a few years ago Mr. Childress.

[…] The latest fined Viking?  DT Fred Evans, who was fined $5k for grabbing the face mask of RB Kevin Smith.  And my problem with the fine this time isn’t just the face that fining players for actions like a face mask, which is an unfortunate but common part of the game, is ridiculous (Vikings LB Chad Greenway was fined $15k earlier this year for a face mask that wasn’t called against the Saints, the first time I’d ever heard of such a fine).
