Frerotte: Something just popped

December 10th, 2008 – 3:46 PM by Judd Zulgad

Quarterback Tarvaris Jackson took all the reps with the Vikings’ first-team offense today as Gus Frerotte rested his lower back. Frerotte wasn’t on the field at the start of practice and was walking very gingerly as he exited. Frerotte, who was wearing a device that provided electronic stimulus treatment for his back, did some work jogging in the pool today but for the most part just tried to let his back relax.

Speaking for the first time since being injured while making a tackle last in the first half of the Vikings’ victory last Sunday at Detroit, Frerotte said, “I twisted [the Lions’ Corey Smith] down and something just popped and I knew it right away.”

Frerotte described the injury as “muscle stuff” and said he does not have a fracture in his back. That was an immediate concern right after the game. “I’m hopeful,” Frerotte said of playing Sunday at Arizona. “Right now, I’m not giving up of anything. … We’ll just go day-by-day and see how I feel when I wake up tomorrow.”

Frerotte could not recall a time during his 15-year career where he missed an entire week of practice and then started. “Obviously, I think you’ve got to get a little bit in but every team is different,” he said of getting work in practice. “I know when I was with Coach [Nick] Saban [in Miami] if you weren’t on the field at all that week you weren’t allowed to play. And then I was with other coaches where as long as you were able to go on Sunday you can play. I think we’ll just have to see how it goes. It’s definitely day-to-day right now. I’m still doing everything else I normally do. Study, see what the Cardinals are going to give us and then the only absence is on the field today.”

Frerotte said he was “really excited” to see Tarvaris Jackson come off the bench and lead the Vikings to a come-from-behind victory over the Lions. “Like I told him earlier in the week, I said, ‘You just never know when you’re going to be able to have those plays come to you again,” Frerotte said. “You have to stick with it, it’s a long season and I was really proud and happy for him that he went out and played so well. He was the reason we won and I was really excited to see him get back out there.”

Jackson, asked if his mentality has to be different given that it looks right now as if it’s a long shot that Frerotte will play, said: “Definitely. When you know you’re playing it’s different. We were talking about that today, me and Gus were talking about that with [offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell]. Sometimes it’s even better not knowing if you’re going to play. You just get in there and just play. Like during the week some guys tend to worry, ‘What if I get this look, what if I get this.’ But when you’re just throwing into the fire during the middle of a game it’s a lot different. You just go out there and play. But I’m trying to do that. Just keep doing whatever I did last week and the week before and just try to get ready for the game if Gus is not ready to go.”

In addition to Frerotte, defensive ends Jared Allen (knee) and Brian Robison (knee), right tackle Artis Hicks (elbow) and wide receiver Darius Reynaud (foot) did not practice. Allen’s absence was not a surprise given that he has a knee and shoulder injury and has been getting rest in practice in recent weeks. It might not be a good sign that Hicks had to sit out. Hicks played last Sunday at Detroit after sitting out the previous week against Chicago. He has been battling an elbow injury for much of the season and there is a possibility he aggravated it at Detroit. There is also a chance the Vikings are simply trying to get him rest in what football folks like to call “the push to Sunday.”

Reynaud had an MRI on his toe Monday after being injured on a kickoff return against Detroit. He was able to return to the game but was limping badly today on the practice field. Reynaud admitted Sunday he was afraid he might have turf toe, not a good thing for a guy who relies on his speed.

Well, it looks like Fred’s old pal Tavarius is going to get the starts this weeks. Everyone get used to dink this, dunk that, short slant this, screen that. 12 men in the box this, Adrian for 2 yards that. Chris Klue punt left, Chis Klue coffin corner right. I would rather Coach Childo lets Tavarius thrown down field a bit and have a pick or two, who cares….let it rip. let this guy learn or show me Fred’s other old pal Booty.

Fred’s game plan… 7 step drop for Tavarius, scan the field, scan, scan, scan…..RUN for your life.

“Frerotte said he was ‘really excited’…”

Sure. Now they will decide to start calling some screens. After the defense starts loading the box with 8,9,10 guys. Why did we not throw more screen passes when Gus was in there? Oh yeah, because that would have been the SMART thing to do.

Wildcat formation, throw a screen to Gus.

[…] Gus Frerotte, who suffered a back injury in Sunday’s win over Detroit and missed the second half, was kept out of practice today and probably won’t get any work in for the rest of the week.  This means we will almost certainly be seeing Tarvaris Jackson as the starting quarterback Sunday against Arizona.  I don’t need to tell everyone how important this game is.  I’d personally feel a lot safer with the veteran Frerotte in there, but we’ll have to settle for Jackson who acquitted himself reasonably well in place of Frerotte Sunday.  Hopefully T-Jack will be able to build on what he did against the atrocious Lions and won’t revert to the form he showed during his two games this year and in past seasons when he was basically inept.  I’ll be the first to pat Jackson on the back if he plays well Sunday, but I expect mediocrity if not outright suckage. Cards 35 Vikes 24.
This one will be a f****ing joke!
Vikes then lose to Falcons and Giants and finish 8-8, miss playoffs and head coach who looks like a dink with a mustache is out the door.

Gus is suffering from a severe case of old age (football years)
I think Brad and Gus worked out a deal so the “injury” could sideline him instead of his performance (can’t take a full season’s pounding) that way, BC also doesn’t get the blame for having GF as our #2 this year….

defense could be REAL tired in the second half of this one!

I believe the judge will rule the players can’t be suspended in this case until the matter is settled in court, meaning the off season…that’s just me

it’s gettin’ cold over here…..maybe below zero next week….just like old times…..but I do love the QUIET, if you know what I mean!

DDS Chilly is staying right where he is, even at 8-8 if that in fact happens. Freds thinks he will be named coach of the year next year. This guy knows football, he is building a champion. Just waits and see.

So, I can’t confirm this, but it appears that both McCoy and Tebow will NOT be declaring for this years draft. Does anyone know for sure?

If that’s the case, are there any QBs we could snag that could be our savior next year?

If the report is true, then I see the Vikes only having five options this offseason:

1. Make no change at QB -ugh
2. Take a risk on picking up a free agent like Cassell
3. Trade up to try and get Bradford or Stafford - yeah right
4. Trade for someone like Derek Anderson or Donovan McNabb - ugh
5. Draft yet another developmental QB -ugh

Best choice looks like going after Cassell to me… but i don’t even like that option too much. Doesn’t look good at QB next year.

Aks,

McCoy is going back to Texas. Don’t know about Tebow, but he is never going to be a pro QB so forgets it.

Fred things Ziggy will go outside and pick up someone to produce now. The only one I’d add to your list would be Brent Favre. Favre has an out with the JETS after the end of this year. I don’t mind Anderson, but we shouldn’t give up too much for him.

Next draft, we need offensive linemen, corners & defensive linemen. Pick up another wide reciever in free agency.

Freds,

Good calls on everything but the Favre non-sense. It’s never going to happen… or at least I hope.

I would also add Jeff Garcia, Kerry Collins, and Kurt Warner to the list, but they’re not really the “QB of the future” we should be looking for.

Agree on your draft analysis. Especially the part about offensive linemen. The more success the Vikes have, the later our first rounder gets, and the more I like the pick of Alex Mack. Best O-lineman in college football. I also like Mark Parsons as a CB choice in round 2 or 3. I think Deon Butler is an exciting sleeper pick at WR late in the draft… one of those guys who’ll fall because he’s “too small”… we’ve heard tha tstory before.

Don’t get your old pal Freds wrong, Fred doesn’t want Brent in purple, just saying it could happen. It would be great to find a small receiver who isn’t afraid to go over the middle, like Wes Welkers, that type of guy.
