Vikings quarterback Gus Frerotte was expected to undergo further examination today to determine the extent of the damage done to his lower back late in the first half Sunday at Detroit when he made a tackle after throwing an interception. Coach Brad Childress said Frerotte had a lower-back bruise but there is a chance the damage could be worse and might (we said might) include a broken bone.
Childress should have an update, although his history in these situations has been that he will let this play out all week. That means don’t hold your breath expecting Frerotte or Tarvaris Jackson to be declared the starter for Sunday’s game at Arizona. There is a good chance nothing will be official until Sunday morning.
By the way, Childress’ day-after-game news conference won’t be held until 2:05 p.m. today. That’s a couple hours later than usual and right during the time the Timberwolves will be announcing their head coaching change.
