Report: Vikings put in claim on cornerback

November 10th, 2008 – 7:02 PM by Judd Zulgad

The Vikings lost out to New Orleans on waiver claim for cornerback Leigh Torrence, according to the website Pro Football Talk. A third-year undrafted free agent out of Stanford, Torrence had been with Washington but was waived when the Redskins signed DeAngelo Hall.

The Vikings put in the claim after losing cornerback Charles Gordon for the season because of an injury to his left leg suffered Sunday against Green Bay. The Saints also had interest after veteran Mike McKenzie suffered a broken kneecap Sunday. New Orleans got Torrence because it’s record (4-5) is worse than the Vikings (5-4).

This does serve as an indication that it’s not a slam dunk Benny Sapp will inherit the nickel job that Gordon had held or that Marcus McCauley automatically now will be active each week. The Vikings placed Gordon on injured reserve today and have not made a roster move to fill that spot.

Apparently they are exploring their options on the open market. Torrence had 43 tackles and one sack in 16 games, and one start, for the Redskins last season. He had 16 tackles and two passes broken up in nine games this year with Washington.
