The Jared Allen decision

November 7th, 2008 – 5:25 PM by Judd Zulgad

Brad Childress made it clear today that the Vikings will continue to monitor Jared Allen’s progress over the next 48 hours before making a decision about whether the Pro Bowl defensive end will play Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.

Allen did limited work in Friday’s practice after sitting out Wednesday and Thursday but even Childress admitted there isn’t much contact in the final practice of the week. The Vikings listed Allen as doubtful on the injury report, meaning there is a 75 percent chance he won’t play.

The guess here, and it’s just a guess, is that Allen doesn’t suit up for a game for only the second time in his four-plus NFL seasons because of injury. It’s not that Allen doesn’t want to play — he made it clear Thursday that he would be on the field if the decision was up to him — but the Vikings can ill afford to take a chance with a 26-year-old standout who is in the first season of a six-year, $74.5 million contract that includes $31 million guaranteed.

The Vikings did not trade a first-round draft pick, two third-rounders and swap sixth-rounders with Kansas City and then give Allen that huge contract in order to jeopardize his future only eight games into his first season in Minnesota.

Childress admitted Thursday that “sometimes you have to protect people from themselves,” and the Vikings have been good about this since Childress arrived as coach in 2006. Adrian Peterson is a perfect example. The star running back sat for two games last season after suffering a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee against Green Bay.

The organization has never been considered exactly open with information since Childress took over, but in the case of Peterson the Vikings went to great lengths to explain the exact nature of the injury, how much time Peterson likely would miss and even made head athletic trainer Eric Sugarman available to the media to talk about the subject.

So far no one but Allen has volunteered information about his shoulder, but internally one must believe the Vikings are being just as careful with Allen as they were with Peterson last season. And that means there is an excellent chance Allen will end up as a spectator on Sunday.

don’t know if any of you have already seen this… but here’s an interesting snippet that proves that our coach is STILL a dumba$$:

Brad Childress raised some ears Wednesday by making a comparison to Bernard Berrian’s chronic big toe problem with TV canine “Lassie.” After whistling part of the theme from the TV show, Childress said, “He still has a little hitch in his get-along. Kind of like Lassie. You know how Lassie used to limp on command with a bad foot? He’s got that going every now and then.”

It was hard to determine whether the analogy was intended to be tongue-in-cheek or if Berrian plays up the injury during rigorous practice periods. As long as he keeps producing the kind of numbers he does on Sunday, most fans won’t care if he walks around like Fred Sanford instead of Lassie.

Brad Childress and Al Franken are ghey lovers and both are also mentally retarded. Why is this coach still here?

This game is so huge on Sunday though, I can’t decide how it’s gonna play out. They beat us by 5 in GB with TJ playing, we should be better now but with Chili’s teams it’s impossible to know what they’re gonna do. What I hate is how successful GB’s short slant passes are against our soft Cover 2 D. We’re gonna have to score like we have been recently and not make too many turnovers.

Bones is a no good hobby farmer that will out of business this winter. hahahahaha. Frieghtliner, what a joke.

Chili has yet to beat Green Bay (that alone should be grounds for termination) so I have little faith. However, if (IF) the Vikes have all the parts moving correctly then who knows. It’ll doubtless be a close game, but just a matter of who finishes it off.

Even with Allen, id be surprised if Professor Plum can come up with a gameplan that outsmarts Mike McCarthy.
In 5 contests, MM has thoroughly and completely outcoached Plum in each of the 5 games. Why would that change this Sunday???

I always wondered what farmers do in the winter. Do they just get to have the whole winter off? That would be nice.

What does everyone think about Derek Hagan?

Probably because his name sounds like Hagan Daaz ice cream.

Oops, that would be WHY does anyone think about Derek Hagan. I don’t really know anything else about him.

akvikesfan says:

I’d lamost rather see the Vikes sign him for the remainder of the season to see what he’s got than hang on to Fergie for the rest of the season.

Souhan from 4 weeks ago:

“He has not proved, though, that he possesses that intangible quality, that glint of inspiration, that presidential or militaristic sheen of charisma that elevates his team or wins seemingly unwinnable games. What we have seen so far is the handiwork of a solid career assistant coach, not a born leader.”

hey, Souhan, instead of calling out the fans like me who don’t drink the purple kool-aid, why don’t you ask BC why he has that “menu” in front of his face again most of the game…..ask him who is calling the plays these days…better yet, ask him, at what point in his coaching career would he consider hiring an capable OC?

KickAssOffense says:

That’s funny Kruigr, I dressed up as Brad Childress for halloween complete with motorola headset, bald head and pedophile mustache….and I made a play sheet like his that said Kick Ass Offense on the outside and on the flip side it I copied the menu from the Brett Favre steak house. I guess my costume was more realistic than I thought!

Does anybody remember when Lovie Smith was hired by Chicago? When asked what his first goal was, the answer was “Beat Green Bay”. I guess Chili has a different agenda. Beat ourselves more often than not. If he goes 0-6 against the Pack then maybe he can do a fishing show like Denny Green.

KAO, did you say something like, “I’m requesting a sweet candy-type product out of your generosity, or I may have to resort to some sort of shenanigan to be enacted somewhere on or around your residence”?

B. Grant says:

November 7th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Viking coach Bud Grant held a 22-12-1 record vs. the Packers. (4 of the losses included one the first year he coached, one during the strike year, and two the year following the Steckel debacle.)

I just finished watching the NFL network and I’m asking myself, Why even play this game? It’s like the Vikes don’t have a chance. “LET’S JUST CROWN THEIR DAMN ASS!” I just hope we don’t get too far behind so we can run AP AD! I am getting REALLY tired of wearing Packer crap to work on Mondays!!!!!!

B. Grant says:

November 7th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

In honor of the Packer game on Sunday, lets look back a bit.

From 1969-1976:

-Vikes were 87-24-1 overall regular season, 7 years in playoffs with 8-7 record, 4 Super Bowls.
-Pukers were 48-60-4, 1 year in playoffs with 0-1 record.
-Vikes 13-3 over Packers during those 8 years. They were a sorry lot, and it was fun to see how they would bumble away a game.

In the next 12 years the Pukers got even WORSE, going 72-106-4, gaining the playoffs only once, that being the strike shortened ‘82 season.

We’ve had a few rough years here in Viking land lately, but nothing even remotely close to that 20-year run when Green Butt only finished above .500 three times at 10-4, 8-6, and 8-7-1.

Lost Viking says:

Kenny, if you’re still steamming about the $ 50K fine for Jared what are you going to feel when the Williams’ get four games a piece. That will end the season. Focus on what’s important.

If Jared played like he did in Game one against the Phacker it wouldn’t have an influence on the game. Here’s the key:
Phacker D front stays in the game too long and wears down. Titans’ took them out last week by whipping the front seven. Vike have to keep it close into 4th quarter because this defense will dog it.

Lost Viking says:

November 8th, 2008 at 12:28 am

Another key - and I don’t understand why the Strib writers have missed this - is the Vike weak performance on 3rd down conversion. Vike have to avoid 3rd down and move the ball. On 3rd and short the running plays are failing.

Lost Viking says:

November 8th, 2008 at 12:41 am

Will Darrell Darrell Bevell Bevell try to go with big plays against the Phacker or try pick and peck away? Phacker D is pretty steady but can be had on any given day. But you can’t expect to run AD from the I and establish the running game. Vike need a game plan to exploit CB weaknesses and you can’t do that without solid pass blocking.

Lost Viking says:

November 8th, 2008 at 12:47 am

McCarthy has been winning the coaching battles against the Vike by cleverly exploiting short passing game weaknesses in Vike D. With E.J. out those weaknesses are still there. Blitzing Rodgers is a conundrum because of his tendency to short drops and quick release. And you know he’s going to Driver&Jennings deep on first downs. McCarth can’t run at the corners like he did last year w/ Grant because Winfield is healthy. Watch McCarthy try to exploit Nap Harris’ slow reactions and drop back into pass coverage

JamesPatterson says:

November 8th, 2008 at 10:10 am

Bones will have to an auction sale because they will go out of business, however they won’t get anything for that junk frieghliner. Frieghtliner, what a joke.

Eat it loser.

KickAssOffense says:

November 8th, 2008 at 10:20 am

@Lost Viking
The Packer CB weaknesses?? They have the best CB tandem in the league. Even when Harris got injured, the nickle back stepped into his place and played great, as evidenced by his 3 INT’s in 3 games as a starter.

jay says:

November 8th, 2008 at 11:24 am

@KissAss, why are you pretending to be a Viking fan? Loser.

Lost Viking says:

November 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

No, that’s a fair point KAO.

Last year Phacker exploited Viking weakness at CB with Winfield out. Ran Ryan Grant right at his replacment (McCauley?) with much success.

Not sure who’s going to be starting CBs for Pack. Would like to see Vike put more pressure on opposing teams CBs much as AD ran over Al Harris in first outing. Physically the Vike in better position to physically dominate Phacker D.

N’est-ce pas?
