Quick reaction

October 12th, 2008 – 4:08 PM by Judd Zulgad

Do me a favor and don’t look at my prediction for today’s game. Yes, I picked the Vikings to win and I was right. Problem is I picked them to win 31-9 and not 12-10. Oops. It wasn’t pretty but the Vikings find themselves tied for first with Chicago at 3-3 in the NFC North; those teams will face each other next Sunday in Soldier Field. Somehow, I’m not sure the fan base is all that happy. There were several “Fire Childress” chants during this game.

Within seconds, fortunes turned: The Vikes were poised to lose while the Bears were up with just 11 seconds left. We know what happened… Just like that, essentially a 2 game swing in favor of the Vikes- Bears lose, we win.

However, the sad reality is that we BARELY beat a horrible team at home. Looks like Chili’s job is safe for another 2-3 weeks minimum now.

Judd,
I wasn’t at the game…how loud, how prevalant were the cheers? And how did Wilf react? He must know we don’t deserve to be 3-3 and he must feel like his big money is going to waste.

I love it! We win and these so called Vikings fans still complain. A win is a win. My wife is a Lions fan… just think she hasn’t had anything good to cheer about, ever. However, she is more of a loyal fan than some of you sorry people on here. My advice, relax, there are 10 more weeks.

I love my team. I hate my team’s coach. This does not make me a bad fan.

Look at it like this, we life long Vikings fans are used to many NFC Central division titles. We are also used to teams that play well no matter what. We are tired of the innate ability of playing at less than abilities and talent would otherwise dictate. We are definitely tired of the KAO and its lack of coaching creativity. How on earth did the Lions manage a new football stadium? Did they, like nearly every other team wanting one, threaten leaving to LA? How many more times are teams allowed to use that sorry excuse to have a one billion dollar tax subsidy?

Bones says:

October 12th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Pathetic. We spent most of the afternoon trailing the worst team in football. But I’m sure the Homers will point out all the positives from this afternoon’s win. Nothing wrong with the fact that the offense generated ZERO points in the first half against the league’s worst defense, nothing wrong at all. Keep drinking the Kool-Aid Homers…

Yes. Second week in a row where we got some big breaks from the officials. Homers, please shut up the next time a call doesn’t go our way…

Fire Childress (clap clap clapclapclap) Fire Childress (clap clap clapclapclap) Fire Childress (clap clap clapclapclap)

A win is a win, the trouble is, the Vikings should be 1-5 right now. That is how they are playing and we can not expect them to go far with there current lack of discipline, inept play calling, and ref pay offs.

bears - win by 7
Lions - loss by 20 (they can only get better)
Cardinals - Loss by 6 (Have we ever beat them?)
Falcons - Win by 11
Giants - loss by 21 (even though we will have the play offs on the line and the Giants will have nothing to play for)

Final: 7 and 9

joe_blow says:

Follow up on the 7 and 9 year - Childress keeps his job, goes 16-0 the next season w/ a superbowl win. Gets the largest vat of gatorade in history dumped on his head, he drowns and everyone remembers the Great Childress and his KAO!

Jake says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:26 pm

I thought the fumble call was wrong (i.e., it was not a fumble) but the replay evidence was not incontrovertible or whatever it needs to be. The pass interference call at the end was a bad call — plain and simple. The idea that ChiliDipWad gets to say he has his team in first place is absurd.

joe_blow says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Yes, if AP could have held on to those two, Longwell kicked the field goal we would have had 10 points. But then we have to take back the “fumble” by the unconscious lion and the two bogus pass interference calls and the Lions would win. Go KAO

Don’t forget the fact that we were facing the Lions (arguably the worst team in the NFL) with a backup quarterback and they still had the game in their paws until the very end. There is no positive spin to be put on today’s game…

joe_blow says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Positive spin. The KAO will get another shot at the kitties.

joe_blow says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:37 pm

In college hockey, when another non-UofM Minnesota team plays the Sioux, we chant “gopher rejects” at all the supposed best players of the other team. I wonder if we can just start chanting “eagle reject” during the games. Do you think chili would figure it out?

Bones says:

sdh13 says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

joe_blow…how about the long pass to Calvin Johnson streaking down the middle of the field when he is basically tackled by the Vikings defender and no flag thrown on that play … I have 4 absolutely horrible calls saving Chili’s worthless A*S*S… you mentioned 3 of them….if they called the unconscious lion getting stripped ,after he already had been laying there for a couple seconds and ruling that a fumble then AP’s was definetely a fumble on Monday night

joe_blow says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:42 pm

I agree. AP’s play should have been a fumble. We should have lost.

kennyrogers says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:44 pm

We’ve gone wild over bad calls for a few years. Especially the ones they can’t even correct on the replay. The Vikes would be better off with no replay rule, IMO.

Is anybody with me that it’s about time some replays and especially PASS INTERFERENCE CALLS go our way? ? ?

sdh13 says:

October 12th, 2008 at 5:46 pm

I would just like to see 1 game where the Vikings have Good creative play calling. We could easily be 1-5 right now. Even with the bad coaching, we had 2 almost/should have wins (making us 5-1). With a mediocre coach, we could be the real deal.

I can’t believe so many of you are actually bitter about a WIN! It ain’t ‘98, we’re not going to win by blowing people out.

We’ve lost our fair share of games b/c of bad ref calls. It’s part of the game.

We’ve just *got* to knock off penalties at the worst possible times, and obviously quit turning the damn ball over.

Go Vikes!

BleedPurple says:

You kidding? The Twin Cities media does not want to be banned from the locker room. The ability to call a spade a spade is forever lost in nearly all media, all topics these days. Where did journalism integrity go?

Maybe it is at the same place that the Congressional approval rating is (13 percent in the most recent poll). Since Congress’ approval is so low, does this mean no incumbents win election in the House and Colonel Klink will be fired in the same month?

A childress quote about the chants.

‘’I don’t hear all that stuff now,'’ the coach said of the chants. ‘’I'm working.'’

So, lets take this from a psychiatric stand point.

1. He has visual hallucinations (he can’t see the “real” field.
2. He has auditory hallucinations (if he can’t hear all that stuff, how much is he hearing? Too many voices?)
3. He has delusional thinking (KOA, need I say more?)

This has been present for at least 6 months.

Diagnoses = Schizophrenia

Childress is psychotic, If Wilf won’t fire him, the NFL should force him into treatment.

sdh13 - I was feeling bad about always saying they had no balls so I made the change to guts for a little.

BleedPurple - what do you think would happen if the MN media was excluded from Winter Park after calling out Childress. It would be a bloodbath, Judd and Chip could have great coverage of the situation “day 35, still excluded” and would wind up working for ESPN.

“Chose Hank Baskett as his top receiver today, and Baskett turned in some wonderful catches.”

Ahhh, another highlight of the Childress era.

joe_blow says:

I’m starting to not like AP as much anymore. His quote about the chants, ‘’That’s crazy. Coach Childress, he does a great job leading us,'’ Peterson said. ‘’I wouldn’t want any other guy to be leading us right now.'’

Nevermind, Childress is a master at deception and AP doesn’t know better.

matty927 says:

darren004 says:

October 12th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Honestly, I would much rather we turn the ship around and have Childress lead us to the playoffs and further, but if we don’t go far in the playoffs, how can Wilf possibly bring him back next year? The fanbase detests him. He is now down to 9% approval rate on ESPN’s coach rater and we have won two games in a row. Ned Yost was more popular in Milwaukee than Childress and his team was doing pretty well until the end this year.

kennyrogers says:

October 12th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

I just missed the camera in the Vike’s locker room. At least Chili had nine people applauding FOR him and not booing against him. Great game by Kevin
Williams though. I would say EJ Henderson is really missed, and Herron takes quite a beating. They better sign a couple linebackers immediately if not sooner.

kennyrogers says:

October 12th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Now is the time to switch coaches. A 12-10 win against the cowardly Lions is a LOSS! Vikes stand at 3-3, start the new guy with an even record, a pretty good core group of players and a bye week pretty quick and see if he can hold on to first place and move away from the pack. And the bears and lions.

joe_blow says:

MDVikes says:

October 12th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

Has a 3-3 coach been more embattled in NFL history? Vikes have lacked a competent offense since they traded Moss. We have serious issues on the O-line despite the multi-millions invested in Hutchinson and McKinnie. AP’s ballhandling has been poor of late. I actually think Frerotte is playing pretty well for a career backup who was about to retire.

Run D was pretty bad in second half, likely due to EJ’s absence.

It helps to see a team for what it is and not imagine what it could be on paper. We have some good parts (Williams, Winfield, Hutch, AP), but no leaders. The QB’s job on offense is to get his o-line in sync. We have way too many penalties and missed blocks. frerotte needs to lead.

If we make the playoffs, we can thank the D, especially Williams and Winfield. The O needs some on-the-field leadership to play better, someone to light a fire under those overpaid linemen.

Bones says:

October 12th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Judd, how come you said there were “several Fire Childress chants” but the Strib’s AP story and the ESPN story both said there were “thousands” of Fire Childress chants?

Channel 5 is running spots for their 10:00 news saying the Vikings fans are demanding CHANGE… now all the media needs to jump on and get this jerkoff out of town

how about AD , another 100 yd effort. hes good.
and even though he lost fumbles twice , we were able to overcome and get the W.

if that game were played outdoors in the snow i would give the edge to the hocky folks…but if it’s played indoors, i give the edge to the Vikes

The Wild did look pretty sloppy at times last night. I don’t see them being in the top 8 come playoff time. That said, Lemaire has done more with less before…

the only problem w/ the northwest division is that every team is equally good and they all match up pretty well w/ one another…it’s sad but the Wild could win 44games and win the division w/ somewhere around 95 points again. or they could get 40 wins, have 90pts and miss the playoffs…thats just how good the division and the conference is

back to the Vikes for a minute… the Vikes are one Peyton Manning away from being perfect indoors and 4-2. that would be good for the division lead, I think the Vikes are facing the Bears at the perfect time, coming off an emotional heart wrenching loss to the Falcons…who have helped us out the last two weeks, btw.
but the Bears seem to be prime for another let down at the hands of the Vikes…and I hope AP can have some of the same success he had last year and the Vikes win an easy one.
on the other hand, I really like Forte, he is impressive and I think he can give the Vikes D troubles next week w/ his versatility.

I don’t know if I’m happy that we won. Cause if we had lost, perhaps Childress would have gotten fired.

vikingsuperfan said it best….

Dear Mr. Wilf,

Fire Brad Childress and Darrell Bevell.

Thank you,

The Patriots offense is really, really bad. I bet Belicheat wishes he would’ve gotten Cassel some more playing time last year instead of having to run up the score on his opponents…

Bears are better this year with Orton playing well. Will be a low-scoring game (like today), team with least turnovers wins. Give the Bears an edge for being at home and usually having excellent special teams play.

Atlanta won because they nailed the Matt Ryan pick. Who knew?

MDV, I knew Ryan would be a player while he was still at BC…as Chilli would say he’s got a nice skill set

I want to keep Childress as much as I want to keep your bosses telling you what to do at work. Let’s go to your work and cheer to fire you too! Ha! (insert sarcasm here) If you watched the game you will see they are still a work in progress. So maybe we have to throw beer cans at the tv more times this year but the team is coming around.
