An expensive celebration

October 10th, 2008 – 2:03 PM by Judd Zulgad

Antoine Winfield’s 59-yard return of a blocked field goal for a touchdown Monday night at New Orleans proved to be a costly one. Winfield, who grabbed the center of the goal post and slid down it, was fined $10,000 by the NFL for unsportsmanlike conduct (using the goal post as a prop), according to a league official.

Meanwhile, receiver Robert Ferguson was fined $5,000 by the league for unnecesarily striking an opponent late on a third-quarter punt return by the Vikings. Both Winfield and Ferguson drew 15-yard penalties during the game.

Linebacker Chad Greenway did not draw a penalty for his face mask on Reggie Bush in the second quarter — the play resulted in a Bush fumble that was recovered by safety Tyrell Johnson — but the NFL did fine Greenway $7,500 for what it termed a “major facemask.” Considering the NFL took this view of the play, one would have to think league officials weren’t too happy with the fact referee Ed Hochuli and his crew did not throw a penalty flag on the play.

Kitna out again: Lions quarterback Jon Kitna did not practice again Friday, meaning there is an excellent chance Dan Orlovsky starts on Sunday against the Vikings.
